4: Chapter 4 The Eye of Data 2
Commander Lin Dong was awakened by a strange silence.
As a veteran from the Reconnaissance Company, his sensitivity to sound was far beyond that of an ordinary person.
Under normal circumstances, the bugle call for reveille should sound in the Barracks dormitory building at six in the morning, and the corridor would be filled with the hurried footsteps, washing sounds, and low conversations of his comrades.
But at this moment, there was only an eerie stillness outside the window, occasionally intermingled with roars coming from the distance that did not sound like they were made by humans.
He opened his eyes; the fluorescent light tubes on the ceiling had gone out, and the emergency lighting emitted a ghastly, pale light.
Phone? He instinctively reached for his bedside, but immediately realized that the electromagnetic pulse from the meteorite crash last night had long since turned all electronic devices into bricks.
The luminous hands on his watch pointed to 5:47.
Then he smelled the scent of blood.
It was very faint, drifting from the direction of the corridor, mixed with a foul, fishy stench peculiar to internal organs.
Commander Lin Dong slowly sat up, his movements as light as a cat's.
His bunk was the lower one near the window, a position that allowed him to observe both the room door and the situation outside the window simultaneously.
The window glass was covered with a grayish layer, looking like... traces of dried blood mist.
He put on his training shoes without tying the laces—that would be a waste of time.
In his bedside cabinet was a Type 95 bayonet, a souvenir he had kept privately during field training last month.
At this moment, this knife became his only weapon.
The door was left ajar, and the blue-white light of the corridor emergency lamp filtered through the crack.
Commander Lin Dong used the tip of the bayonet to gently nudge the door open, his field of vision gradually expanding—
There were three people in the corridor. No, three corpses. Or rather, three moving corpses.
They were wearing the same camouflage training uniforms as him; one of them was Zhang Lei, a senior private from the next squad, who had even borrowed a power bank from him last night.
At this moment, Zhang Lei's face had the ghastly gray color peculiar to the dead, his eyeballs had turned completely milky white, and a string of black mucus hung from the corner of his mouth.
His left arm was broken at the elbow, with white bone spurs exposed, but he seemed completely unaware of it, simply pacing back and forth in the corridor mechanically.
Commander Lin Dong's heart contracted sharply.
He had seen dead people. Exercise accidents, mishaps during border patrols—he had experienced them all.
But he had never seen anything like this—a "thing" that was clearly dead but still moving.
What made his spine chill even more was that when he stared at Zhang Lei, a line of translucent text suddenly appeared before his eyes:
【F-Class Zombie】
【HP: 95 / 120】
【Threat Level: Low】
【Note: Ordinary human infection mutation, retains basic movement ability, sensitive to sound】
What the hell?
Commander Lin Dong blinked; the text was still there, even floating slightly as his gaze moved.
He looked at the other two zombies, and data appeared for them as well:
【F-Class Zombie】 【HP: 87 / 120】 【Threat Level: Low】
【F-Class Zombie】 【HP: 110 / 120】 (Higher integrity) 【Threat Level: Low】
This was not a hallucination. This was some kind of... information? Information appearing directly on his retina?
A thought flashed through his mind: meteorite, radiation, mutation, datafication.
When that meteorite fell last night, the sky had flashed with an eerie green light; he had been smoking by the window at the time and was bathed in that light.
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. No matter what this "Eye of Data" was, the most important thing right now was to leave this building alive.
Commander Lin Dong began to collect information.
Through the limited view of the door crack, he observed: there were 3 zombies in the corridor, with Zhang Lei closest to him, about 5 meters away.
The other two were in the middle of the corridor, about 15 meters away.
Both ends of the corridor were illuminated by emergency lights, but there was a window at the east end, and the natural light filtering in—that must be the stairwell.
He looked at Zhang Lei, and the data appeared again.
This time he noticed that below the HP value, another line of small text was slowly pulsing: 【Auditory Sensitivity: Level 3.2 / Will enter active state when stimulated by sound】
He looked at the other two zombies, and the data was slightly different: 【Auditory Sensitivity: Level 3.1】 【Auditory Sensitivity: Level 3.4】
This indicated their level of perception to sound.
Commander Lin Dong quickly constructed a model in his mind: these zombies relied on hearing to track prey, and a sensitivity above 3.0 meant that even normal footsteps would attract their attention.
He looked at his feet. Training shoes, rubber soles, would not make too much noise on the concrete floor. But the corridor was empty, and any slight sound would be amplified.
He had to create a diversion.
He scanned the room he was in. Four bunk beds, sleeping bunks for eight people. The beds of the others were empty—most people had gone to the company's barbecue party last night, while he and a few others like Zhang Lei didn't go because they were on duty. Now that he thought about it, that party...
Commander Lin Dong stopped thinking about it. His gaze fell on the stainless steel water cup on the bedside cabinet. It was standard military issue, weighing about half a kilogram when full of water.
A plan formed in his mind.
He gently picked up the water cup, poured out the overnight tea inside, and then placed the cup on the windowsill.
He carefully pushed open the window—the aluminum alloy window frame made a slight friction sound, and the three zombies in the corridor stopped their movements simultaneously, their heads turning in this direction.
Commander Lin Dong held his breath, not moving an inch.
A few seconds later, the zombies resumed their aimless wandering. Their vision seemed very weak, only able to perceive moving objects.
Commander Lin Dong took a deep breath and pushed the water cup out the window with force.
The water cup tumbled in the air, and two seconds later, a "clang" sound came—it hit the bicycle shed on the first floor.
The three zombies in the corridor instantly went berserk! Their movement speed increased sharply, and they rushed toward the other end of the corridor in an unnatural, joint-reversing posture—that was the direction the sound came from, which was the location of the stairwell.
Commander Lin Dong did not waste these precious few seconds.
He pushed the door open, hunched over, and moved quickly along the wall base using the low-profile crawling movement peculiar to scouts.
His target was the opposite direction—the other end of the corridor, where the Company Commander's office and equipment room were; there should be better weapons there.
The three zombies rushed to the stairwell, found no target downstairs, and began to pace at the stair entrance.
Commander Lin Dong took advantage of this gap and had already moved 20 meters, arriving at the door of the Company Commander's office.
The door was left ajar.
He gently pushed the door open, slipped inside, and then slowly closed the door without making a sound.
The office was filled with a thicker scent of blood.
The Company Commander lay on his back behind the desk, with a huge laceration on his chest, ribs turned outward, and his heart missing.
But he had not turned into a zombie—he had been shot in the head, and there were splatters of blood and brain matter on the wall.
Commander Lin Dong recognized the gun. It was the Company Commander's service weapon, the type 92 pistol, which had fallen under the desk.
He walked over and picked up the pistol. There were 11 rounds left in the magazine—the Company Commander had fired 1 shot, using it on his own head.
Commander Lin Dong silently gave a military salute to the Company Commander's corpse. Then he began to search the entire office.
In the file cabinet, there was a Type 95 short assault rifle, two full magazines, and an unopened box of 9mm pistol ammunition.
In the corner, there was also a crate of hand grenades—leftover from the company's training last week, which hadn't been put back into storage yet.
Commander Lin Dong quickly checked his equipment: 1 Type 95 short assault rifle, 60 rounds of 5.8mm ammunition, 11+20 rounds of pistol ammunition; 4 hand grenades; 1 bayonet.
He quickly distributed the ammunition into the various pockets of his combat uniform, slung the Type 95 rifle on his back, and tucked the pistol into his waistband.
Then he came to the window to observe the situation outside.
The playground in front of the office building was a purgatory.
At least forty or fifty zombies were wandering around, most of them wearing military uniforms, and some in civilian clothes—they must have been the local personnel who came to attend the social party last night.
On the barbecue grill in the playground, the charcoal fire had long since gone out, the iron skewers for meat were scattered all over the ground, and beside it was a corpse that had been gnawed beyond recognition.
【F-Class Zombie】 × 37
【E-Class Mutant (Speed Type)】 × 1
【Threat Level: Medium】
【Note: Initial mutation occurred after infection, movement speed increased, exercise caution】
Commander Lin Dong saw that Mutant. Its appearance was significantly different from ordinary zombies: its limbs were disproportionately elongated, its back was hunched, and it ran like a four-legged beast.
Its speed was indeed fast, weaving through the zombie crowd, occasionally stopping to sniff something.
He had to leave the playground area.
Commander Lin Dong quickly drew a map of the Barracks in his mind: to the east of the office building was the cafeteria, behind the cafeteria was the garage, and the garage had a side door leading to the road outside the Barracks.
He needed to bypass the playground and reach the east side.
Just then, footsteps came from outside the office.
It was not the dragging footsteps of a zombie, but a human's—hurried, panicked, accompanied by panting.
Commander Lin Dong immediately hid behind the door and raised his pistol.
The door was pushed open violently, and a figure rushed in, almost colliding with Commander Lin Dong's muzzle.
It was a female soldier; her shoulder insignia showed she was a senior private from the Communications Company.
Her face was covered in tear tracks and dirt, and there was a bloody scratch on her left arm that was still oozing blood—indicating she had just been injured not long ago.
When she saw Commander Lin Dong's muzzle, her pupils contracted sharply, and her legs went weak, almost causing her to collapse to her knees.
"Don't, don't kill me!" Her voice was hoarse, almost shouted out, "I'm not a zombie! I'm not dead yet!"
Commander Lin Dong did not lower his gun. He signaled her to raise her hands with the muzzle while activating "Eye of Data":
【Li Na】
【Lv.1 Communications Soldier】
【HP: 83 / 100】 (Blood loss state)
【Status: Mild infection?】
【Threat Level: None】
【Note: Left arm scratched, infection probability 17.3%, remaining healthy time about 3-5 hours】
Mild infection?
Commander Lin Dong's heart sank. This female soldier named Li Na had already been scratched.
According to the panel, she had nearly a 20% chance of turning into a zombie.
"You were bitten." He said, his tone devoid of emotion.
Li Na's body trembled violently; she looked down at her left arm, and tears welled up again: "I, I don't know... Just now in the cafeteria, a comrade suddenly went crazy and pounced on me to scratch me... I pushed him away and ran... I..."
She said incoherently.
Commander Lin Dong calculated quickly. A 17.3% probability was not low, but it didn't mean certain death either. The key was that she was alive now and could provide information.
"What's the situation over at the cafeteria?" He interrupted her sobbing.
Li Na was stunned for a moment, trying to calm her emotions: "Very, many zombies... at least twenty-something. The people in the kitchen squad are almost all finished. I ran out from the back door, and they didn't chase me."
"What about the garage?"
"I didn't go there, but I saw from the window that the garage door was open, and there were vehicles inside!"
Commander Lin Dong nodded. This matched his own plan.
"Listen," he looked into Li Na's eyes, his voice low but clear, "Your probability of being infected is 17.3%, and it will be about 3 to 5 hours before it's determined whether you mutate. You can follow me during this time, but there are two rules: First, absolute obedience to orders; Second, if I notice you showing signs of mutation, I will shoot immediately."
Li Na's face was pale, but she bit her lip and nodded vigorously.
"Name, specialty."
"Li Na, Communications Company, specialty is radio communication and satellite signal reception."
Communications Soldier. Commander Lin Dong's eyes brightened. In the apocalypse, communication meant intelligence, and it meant the possibility of establishing contact with other survivors.
"Very good." He put away the pistol, found a roll of medical bandage from the desk drawer, and threw it to her, "Bandage your wound first, then come with me."
While Li Na was bandaging her wound, Commander Lin Dong continued to observe the situation outside the window.
The zombies on the playground began to become restless. They seemed to have sensed something and collectively turned toward the office building.
That Mutant even ran directly to the door of the office building, sniffing the air with its deformed, long nose.
Commander Lin Dong realized the problem: the scent of blood.
Li Na had run all the way here, and the dripping blood would expose their route.
"Are you done?" He asked.
Li Na nodded, her complexion still very poor.
"From now on, do not make any sound." Commander Lin Dong said in a low voice, then gently opened the door on the other side of the office—that was a corridor leading to the equipment room, and further ahead was the back door of the cafeteria.
The corridor was about 30 meters long, windowless, and completely dark.
Commander Lin Dong pulled a glow stick from his pocket, snapped it to light, and threw it into the depths of the corridor.
The glow stick drew an arc in the air, and after landing, illuminated a range of two or three meters around it.
No zombies.
But he wasn't reassured.
He crouched down, took two bullets from his tactical vest, and gently tossed them to both sides of the corridor—
The crisp sound of the bullet hitting the ground was amplified in the enclosed space.
At the end of the corridor, rapid footsteps echoed from the darkness!
Three F-Class Zombies rushed out from the darkness, pouncing toward the spot where the bullet had landed. They could move in the dark, relying on their hearing.
This was exactly what Commander Lin Dong was waiting for.
As the zombies lunged in the wrong direction, he pulled Li Na up and moved quickly along the wall on the other side of the corridor. Thirty meters would only take a scout three or four seconds, but with an injured civilian, it took him seven or eight.
Just as they were about to reach the end of the corridor, Li Na tripped over something—it was a corpse.
She lost her balance and hit the wall with a dull thud.
The three F-Class Zombies turned around simultaneously!
In the darkness, Commander Lin Dong could clearly see their eyes—or rather, the milky white spheres in their eye sockets—all staring in this direction.
Without any hesitation, he raised his Type 95, aimed, and fired three short bursts in succession.
The roar of the 5.8mm bullets in the enclosed corridor was almost deafening, but the heads of the three F-Class Zombies burst open in response, like watermelons smashed by a hammer.
【 Killed F-Class Zombie × 3, Energy Points + 30 】 The panel popped up with a notification.
Commander Lin Dong had no time to look closely; he pulled Li Na up and pushed open the door at the end of the corridor—blinding sunlight flooded in instantly.
They were out.
Outside the door was the kitchen area of the cafeteria. The range hoods were still running, emitting a humming noise. It was this noise that had masked the sound of their gunfire just now.
Li Na crouched on the ground, covering her ears with her hands, trembling all over. She had never seen killing—or rather, killing zombies—at such close range.
Commander Lin Dong ignored her and quickly observed the surrounding environment.
There were three doors in the kitchen: the left led to the cafeteria hall, the right to the storage room, and the back to the waste disposal area. Hissing and scratching sounds of zombies came from the direction of the cafeteria hall—at least a dozen were gathered there.
"This way." He pulled Li Na and headed toward the storage room.
The door to the storage room was ajar, and inside it was piled with rice, flour, grain, oil, and various canned goods. Commander Lin Dong's gaze swept across the shelves—this wasn't a resource point, but a shelter. It had a thick iron door, no windows, and only a small ventilation opening.
But he chose not to hide inside. Hiding inside meant being trapped to death. His target was the garage.
On the other side of the storage room was a small door with a sign hanging on it that read "Logistics Only." Commander Lin Dong pushed the door open, and a narrow passageway appeared before his eyes. At the end of the passage, he could vaguely see sunlight and the silhouette of a military green truck. The garage!
But there was something in the passage. Three F-Class Zombies, wearing kitchen uniforms, were wandering in the passage. They were about 20 meters away from the door, with their backs to him.
Commander Lin Dong did not fire rashly. Gunshots would attract more zombies. He looked around, and his gaze landed on the bottled cooking oil on the shelves.
He gently picked up a bottle, unscrewed the cap, and poured the cooking oil onto the floor, extending it all the way to the doorway. Then he took out a lighter—swiped from the Company Commander Lin's desk—lit a piece of wrapping paper, and threw it onto the oil trail.
The flames erupted with a "whoosh" and quickly spread into the passage.
Did zombies have a perception of temperature? Commander Lin Dong didn't know, but he was betting on it.
The heat and smoke from the flames triggered the fire sprinklers in the passage, and a mist of water instantly sprayed down. The sound of the sprinklers and the crackling of the flames created a wall of noise.
The three F-Class Zombies turned around simultaneously and lunged toward the flames!
This was the moment Commander Lin Dong had been waiting for.
When they rushed through the fire zone, the flames had already burned their trouser legs. The F-Class Zombies felt no pain and continued forward, but their attention was completely drawn to the flames.
Commander Lin Dong grabbed Li Na and went around the edge of the flames, moving quickly along the wall on the other side of the passage. The heat waves from the fire scorched their cheeks, and the smoke made them almost suffocate, but this was the only way to survive.
20 meters, 15 meters, 10 meters...
Just as they were about to reach the garage entrance, Li Na suddenly began to cough violently. She had inhaled too much smoke and couldn't help it.
The three F-Class Zombies turned their heads simultaneously!
The closest zombie was less than 5 meters away.
Commander Lin Dong didn't hesitate at all; he shoved Li Na into the garage with his left hand and raised his type 92 pistol with his right, aiming at the nearest F-Class Zombie—but he didn't fire.
He saw something even more lethal. In the corner of the garage, over a dozen oil drums were stacked. That was the spare gasoline for the vehicles. If he fired here, the sparks from the bullets hitting the concrete wall would be enough to blow up the entire garage.
He holstered the type 92 pistol back to his waist, pulled his Type 95 from his back, and attached the bayonet. Since he couldn't use the gun, he would use the blade.
The first F-Class Zombie lunged in front of him. Commander Lin Dong dodged to the side, letting its sharp claws pass, while simultaneously driving the bayonet obliquely upward into its temple from the side. The sensation of the blade piercing the skull traveled through the handle, and the F-Class Zombie instantly went limp.
【 Killed F-Class Zombie, Energy Points + 10 】
The second F-Class Zombie followed closely behind. Commander Lin Dong didn't have time to pull out the blade, so he had to abandon it, rolling to dodge its pounce and seizing the opportunity to pick up an iron pipe from the ground—it was a crowbar used for car repairs.
The crowbar was longer and heavier than the bayonet. Commander Lin Dong stood up, swung the bar, and struck the second F-Class Zombie squarely in the neck. Its cervical vertebrae snapped, and the zombie's head tilted to one side at an eerie angle, but it was still moving! Its hands were still clawing at Commander Lin Dong!
Commander Lin Dong stepped back half a pace, swung the crowbar horizontally, and shattered its knee. The F-Class Zombie lost its balance and fell to the ground. Commander Lin Dong stepped forward, pinned its chest with his foot, aimed the tip of the crowbar at its eye socket, and stabbed it fiercely.
【 Killed F-Class Zombie, Energy Points + 10 】
The third F-Class Zombie, the one that had been closest just now, had already lunged in front of Li Na. Li Na sat slumped on the ground, holding her head with both hands, letting out a desperate scream.
Commander Lin Dong couldn't reach her in time to rescue her.
But he saw that Li Na's screaming had attracted the zombie's attention; it didn't attack immediately but was instead stimulated by the sound to become even more frenzied—it twitched on the spot, as if enjoying the sound?
Commander Lin Dong grabbed a wrench and threw it with all his might. The wrench spun through the air for over ten meters and struck the F-Class Zombie squarely in the back of the head. Although it didn't shatter the skull, the massive impact caused the zombie to stagger forward two steps, pouncing past Li Na and hitting the garage wall.
Commander Lin Dong had already rushed over, the crowbar held high, and using the momentum, he slammed it down fiercely.
The tip of the crowbar pierced the top of the zombie's head, driving straight into the cranial cavity.
【 Killed F-Class Zombie, Energy Points + 10 】
Everything fell silent. Only the fire sprinklers were still spraying water, along with the faint hissing of zombies in the distance.
Commander Lin Dong panted heavily, leaning against the wall.
Fifty seconds, three F-Class Zombies, dealt with using melee weapons. In normal times, this would be a test of a scout's physical limits. He felt his old injury in his left arm throbbing; he had used too much force just now.
Li Na lay slumped on the ground, soaked through, unable to tell if it was sweat, tears, or fire sprinkler water. The way she looked at Commander Lin Dong had changed from fear to some kind of complex emotion—awe? Reliance? She couldn't even tell herself.
"Get up." Commander Lin Dong's voice remained flat. "We aren't out of danger yet."
He walked to the center of the garage, looking at the military humvee in front of him. This was the company's command vehicle, six-wheel drive, armored protection, with a curb weight of 5 tons, equipped with a 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The fuel tank was full, and the car keys were usually left in the ignition—that was how things were in the military, so it could be started at any time in an emergency.
Commander Lin Dong checked the vehicle: the tires were intact, the engine was normal, and the fuel gauge indicated it could still run for 400 kilometers. In the back seat, there were two cases of mineral water and some field rations—supplies left over from last week's training.
"Get in." He opened the passenger door, pushed Li Na inside, then jumped into the driver's seat and started the engine.
The roar of the 6.5-liter diesel engine was deafening in the enclosed garage, but it didn't matter anymore. He needed this vehicle; he needed its speed, armor, and load-carrying capacity.
He shifted gears, slammed the accelerator to the floor, and the humvee surged up the ramp of the garage exit like a steel beast—outside was the parade ground.
37 zombies and 1 Mutant all turned toward this direction.
Commander Lin Dong did not slow down. The humvee smashed through the iron fence and charged into the horde. The front of the car knocked two zombies flying, the wheels crushed a twisted body, and violent jolts shook the vehicle.
Li Na screamed and gripped the grab handle tightly.
Commander Lin Dong gripped the steering wheel tightly, his gaze locked on the east exit of the parade ground—there was a road leading out of the military camp.
The Mutant moved. It lunged from the side at a speed far exceeding that of ordinary zombies, running on all fours like a cheetah. 15 meters, 10 meters, 5 meters—it leaped, pouncing toward the driver's side window!
Commander Lin Dong jerked the steering wheel, the humvee tilted, and the two right wheels lifted off the ground! The Mutant's sharp claws grazed the car window, making a harsh "screeching" sound. Four deep scratches were left on the military bulletproof glass, but it didn't shatter.
The humvee landed heavily back on the ground. Commander Lin Dong slammed on the brakes, followed immediately by reverse gear, and hit the gas. The wheels spun wildly, and the rear of the car slammed into the Mutant that had just landed!
【 Killed E-Class Mutant (Speed Type), Energy Points + 50 】 The panel popped up.
Commander Lin Dong did not stop; he shifted to forward gear, and the humvee charged out of the parade ground and onto the road, leaving the horde and the military camp that had turned into a purgatory far behind.
On both sides of the road was the scenery of the apocalypse. Burning vehicles, dead bodies, wandering zombies, and occasionally survivors peering out of windows in terror. The sky was gray, and the dust from the fallen meteorites obscured the sun.
Commander Lin Dong drove eastward. He didn't know where he was going, only that he needed to get as far away from the city as possible. His gaze swept over the rearview mirror—the silhouette of the military camp grew smaller and smaller until it finally disappeared from view.
But just then, a brand new panel suddenly popped up before his eyes: 【 S-Class Talent Carrier conditions met 】 【 Binding... 】 【 Binding successful! 】 【 Welcome to—Red Alert 】
Commander Lin Dong's pupils contracted sharply. He subconsciously slammed on the brakes, and the humvee left a long skid mark on the road. Red Alert? That old game from twenty years ago?
He stared at the semi-transparent panel floating before him, which featured icons for a base vehicle, power plant, Barracks, and ore refinery, all of which were in the 【 Unlocked / Pending Construction 】 state.
Below the panel was a line of small text: 【 Current Energy Points: 100 】 (Base gift + kill rewards) 【 Deploy base vehicle? 】 【 Note: Deploying the base vehicle requires 100㎡ of flat ground, no threat units within a 50-meter radius, and power connection. Deployment time: 6 hours. 】
Commander Lin Dong's hands gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. Li Na looked at him, not knowing what had happened. In her eyes, Commander Lin Dong had just suddenly stopped the car and then stared blankly at the air in front of him.
"Company... Company Commander Lin?" she asked cautiously.
Commander Lin Dong didn't answer. His mind raced: Was this a mutation brought by the meteorites? Or some kind of intervention from a higher dimension? The data on the panel was so precise, so... game-like, but the power it brought was real. Those three F-Class Zombies, that Mutant, had all been killed by his own hands.
If he could really build that "base vehicle"... He took a deep breath and restarted the car.
"It's nothing," he said, his voice calmer and more resolute than before. "We'll find a safe place, and then... I'm going to build a house."
Li Na looked at him blankly, completely not understanding what he was talking about. The hummer vehicle disappeared at the end of the road.
And behind them, in the direction of the military camp, at a third-floor window of the office building, a thin figure wearing glasses slowly stood up. He was a local staff member who had come to attend the social mixer last night and had hidden in the office building during the chaos.
He had witnessed the entire process of Commander Lin Dong killing the three F-Class Zombies and driving through the horde. More importantly, he had also seen the red light that flashed across the body of the humvee when it started—a light that ordinary people couldn't see, belonging to the system.
He narrowed his eyes and muttered to himself: "Interesting... that person has something on him."
He took an ID card out of his pocket, which read: Beiling City Biological Research Institute, Assistant Researcher, Technical Staff Officer Chen Mo.
