"I can’t," Satou interrupted, genuine regret in his voice. "My original mission—hunting the assassin who tried to kill me—is time-sensitive. Every day I delay is a day he has to recover his strength or relocate to somewhere we can’t find him. I’ve already spent more time here than I should have."


He looked at the assembled lizard-folk warriors, seeing hope and exhaustion in equal measure on their faces. These were people who’d been to hell and back, who’d lost everything and somehow found the strength to keep fighting. "But I can give you this—advice, and a plan for moving forward."


Chief Krrax gestured for him to continue, clearly willing to take any guidance Satou offered.


"The serpent tribe has suffered losses equal to yours," Satou began, his tactical mind working through the political situation. "With King Vexor dead and his elite guard eliminated, they’re leaderless and vulnerable. Many of them were corrupted against their will—they were victims of the cult’s dark magic just as much as your people were. They’re not your true enemies. The cult was the enemy. Vexor was the enemy. But the common serpent-folk? They’re just people who got caught up in forces beyond their control."


He paused, making sure Krrax was following his logic and not just dismissing it out of hand. "You need to reach out to them. Find their surviving leadership—whoever wasn’t completely corrupted by Vexor’s madness, whoever still remembers the peace you once had. Offer peace terms, not as conqueror to conquered but as survivor to survivor. Both tribes have been manipulated and damaged by outside forces working against you. Rebuild together rather than continuing the cycle of violence that almost destroyed both your peoples."


"You ask me to forgive those who murdered my people?" Krrax’s voice was hard, though Satou could hear he was at least considering the words rather than rejecting them outright. "My daughter was killed by serpent warriors. My son. My mate. Dozens of my friends and comrades. And you want me to just... let that go?"


"I’m not asking you to forget," Satou said firmly. "Honor your dead. Mourn your losses. Hold trials for anyone who committed atrocities beyond what the corruption forced them to do—there’s a difference between warriors following orders under magical compulsion and those who took pleasure in cruelty. But don’t let the past determine your future."


He gestured toward the destroyed temple behind them. "The cult didn’t choose this location randomly. They picked it because two tribes living in relative prosperity made perfect sacrificial targets. Rich emotional connections between tribes made the deaths more potent for their ritual. If you rebuild separately, constantly watching each other with suspicion and hostility, you’ll just invite the next predator to try the same manipulation."


Satou stepped closer, his voice carrying absolute conviction. "But if you rebuild together—combine your strengths, maintain united defenses, create something stronger than either tribe was before—you become a much harder target. You become something that can survive when the next threat comes. And there will always be another threat in the demon realm."


The chief was silent for a long moment, his mind clearly wrestling with the suggestion. Old hatred warred with tactical pragmatism. Finally, he spoke: "There was a serpent among their tribe... Ssythral. He was King Sethrak’s closest advisor, a scholar and diplomat rather than a warrior. When Vexor took power through... whatever means he used, Ssythral spoke against the war. Publicly opposed it, called it madness and betrayal of everything the tribes had built together."


Krrax’s expression became thoughtful. "I heard through our scouts that Vexor had him imprisoned for sedition. If he’s still alive... he’d be someone both tribes could accept as leadership. Someone untainted by Vexor’s corruption, someone who remembers the peace we once had, someone who might actually want to rebuild what was destroyed."


"Then find him," Satou urged. "Make him the new serpent king, or establish some kind of joint council where both tribes have equal voice in decisions. The specific governmental structure matters less than the principle—unity rather than division. Cooperation rather than conflict."


He placed a hand on the chief’s shoulder. "You’re a good leader, Krrax. You kept your people alive through impossible odds. You made the hard decisions that had to be made. You never gave up hope even when hope seemed foolish. Those same qualities will serve you well in peacetime. Guide your tribes—both of them—to something better than what existed before."


Chief Krrax extended his hand toward Satou once more. "You’re not just a warrior, Lord Satou. You’re a leader who thinks beyond the next battle, who sees the bigger picture. Your settlement is lucky to have you."


Satou clasped the offered hand firmly. "And your tribes—both of them—will be lucky to have you guiding their recovery. I’ve seen enough battles and enough leaders to know when someone has what it takes to rebuild after tragedy. You’ll do well, Chief. I believe that."


He turned to his team, noting their various states of exhaustion and injury. Grimnir’s wounds were healing but still severe, blood staining his clothes. Kelvin’s shoulder needed proper treatment despite him trying to hide the pain. Urgot could barely stand without support, blood loss and broken ribs taking their toll. Freda was unconscious, being carried by Kelvin who seemed the least injured of anyone. Shadow moved carefully, favoring their injured ribs.


"We need to move," Satou said, though he hated pushing them when they were this injured. "The sun will be up in a few hours, and we’ve already lost a full day to this detour. Every hour counts now."


Chief Krrax gestured, and several lizard-folk warriors quickly brought supplies. Fresh food that would travel well, water in sturdy containers, medical supplies including healing salves and bandages, even some magical items salvaged from the serpent encampment—protection amulets, minor healing charms, items that could help on their continued journey.
