Chapter 367: The Mysterious Artifact
The grandmaster’s words hung heavy in the air. With most of their grandmaster-level forces committed to a single location, the light elf kingdom would be catastrophically exposed to opportunistic assault from their ancient enemies.Seraphina’s rage warred with necessity for several seconds before she forced herself to reconsider. Much as she wanted overwhelming force applied to this situation, completely compromising their position would be foolish.
"Three grandmasters," she amended through gritted teeth, the concession clearly costing her pride. "Deploy the three strongest to establish immediate blockade around the shop. The remaining three should maintain defensive positions at the borders but be prepared to reinforce when I command it. Move now!"
Her tone carried such venomous authority that the elf on the other end of the communication crystal didn’t dare question or delay further despite the dangerous strategic implications.
"It will be done immediately, Your Majesty," came the prompt response before the connection terminated.
Seraphina maintained her pursuit despite knowing that direct interception was now impossible.
But if she could drive Lola toward the shop where fresh grandmasters waited in ambush, the demon would find herself trapped between two forces with nowhere left to run.
At the border between the dark and light elf territories, the stationed scouts witnessed an extraordinary development. Three grandmaster-level auras suddenly departed from the light elf kingdom and moved with purposeful speed toward the mysterious shopkeeper’s establishment in the neutral gray zone.
The dark elf observers immediately activated their communication crystals, knowing that such unusual grandmaster deployment represented either significant opportunity or catastrophic threat that required immediate royal attention.
"Lord Darian," the lead scout reported with urgency, "three light elf grandmasters have just surrounded the shopkeeper’s location. They’re establishing what appears to be a blockade formation around his shop."
King Darian received the report in his obsidian throne room, his expression remaining carefully neutral as he processed the words of his subordinates. He remained silent for several long moments, his mind working through possible scenarios that would justify such dramatic redeployment of critical military assets.
For the light elves to send three grandmasters to surround the shop, something significant must have happened. The ceasefire had technically expired, making both kingdoms vulnerable to opportunistic attacks. Yet Seraphina was willing to commit some of her remaining grandmaster forces to a single location focused on the mysterious human merchant.
Was she not afraid of a potential ambush?
Either she had finally decided to eliminate the shopkeeper as a potential threat, or something had occurred involving him that demanded immediate overwhelming response. Neither possibility boded well for maintaining the delicate status quo that had existed around the interdimensional merchant.
"Send a scout to investigate the situation more closely, in the elven kingdom," Darian commanded after his period of contemplation. "But make absolutely certain to remain hidden and avoid detection. Do not reveal yourself under any circumstances. I want eyes on what’s happening at that shop, but I will not risk exposing our plans."
He leaned forward slightly, his dark eyes glinting with malicious intent. "If the light elves are focusing their limited grandmaster forces on the shopkeeper, they’re creating vulnerability elsewhere. Have our border forces move closer to optimal striking positions, but do not cross into their territory. Be prepared to exploit any opportunities that develop."
The communication crystal acknowledged his orders before the connection terminated. Darian remained seated, his mind already working through contingency plans for whatever chaos was unfolding around the mysterious shop that had disrupted the careful balance between their kingdoms.
If Seraphina had made a catastrophic miscalculation, he intended to capitalize on it ruthlessly.
The desperate pursuit continued through the ancient forest as Lola pushed her fire wings to their absolute limits. Every second bought more precious distance from the injured but furious queen and her grandmaster escorts. The gap had widened to several hundred meters now, but Lola could still sense their relentless determination behind her.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of sustained flight, they were only a few miles away from the shop. Lola’s eyes could make out the familiar structure in the distance, that sanctuary between kingdoms where Noah’s mysterious system provided protection that transcended normal magical defenses.
Relief flooded through her exhausted body at the sight. They were going to make it. Despite the overwhelming odds, the catastrophic battle, and the resources burned to survive, they had actually escaped with both Noah and the precious teardrop fruit.
She glanced down at Noah’s unconscious face briefly, her expression mixing sadness at his vulnerable state with profound relief that they would soon reach safety. Her grip on him tightened protectively as her fire wings carried them forward.
"I will protect you, like you protected me, I won’t let you down, Noah. I promise." Lola whispered, her voice carrying emotions too complex to fully articulate.
The ethereal cat was perched on Lola’s shoulder, having abandoned her attempts to keep pace on foot. No matter how fast the feline could run, she simply couldn’t match the velocity Lola’s awakened fire wings provided during desperate flight. So she had decided to ride along, her smaller form adding negligible weight to Lola’s burden.
The shop grew larger in their vision with each passing second, sanctuary tantalizingly close. Just a few more minutes of sustained flight and they would reach the protective boundaries of Noah’s establishment.
But even as hope surged, Lola’s sharp perception detected something that made her heart sink with dread.
Three powerful auras had positioned themselves around the shop in a formation. Fresh grandmaster-level presences that hadn’t been exhausted by hours of combat, waiting in ambush exactly where she needed to go.
The trap had been set, and she was flying directly into it.
Still, Lola could do nothing about the trap waiting ahead. As she felt her current enhancement beginning to fade once more, she reached into her rapidly depleting storage and consumed another round of premium items—luxury smoothie, herbal tea, and instant coffee. The familiar surge of power flooded through her exhausted system, buying precious additional time.
Although she had grown fond of the ethereal cat during their desperate battle, Noah remained her absolute priority. He was her only purpose now, the singular focus that justified any sacrifice necessary to reach the shop’s safety. Even if that meant using the cat as a distraction or sacrifice to buy those final critical seconds.
She withdrew one more enhancement item and passed it to the cat on her shoulder. "When we engage those three grandmasters, you will attack and disturb them. Create enough chaos for me to break through their formation with Noah."
The cat wasn’t stupid. It had consumed the protein bar Lola offered and immediately recognized that such a modest enhancement wasn’t remotely sufficient to deal with three fresh, powerful grandmasters waiting in coordinated ambush. The feline understood with brutal clarity that once Seraphina and her forces caught up from behind, it would be trapped between two overwhelming groups with no hope of survival.
But the demonic contract didn’t allow refusal or negotiation. The cat simply accepted it, its eyes showing resignation mixed with hope that somehow this suicidal gambit might work out better than logic suggested.
As they approached within a mile of the shop, the three light elf grandmasters immediately took flight. Their sharp perception had detected the incoming presences from significant distance, and they moved to intercept them.
The dark elf scouts watching from concealed positions in the forest immediately moved closer while activating their communication crystals. This was exactly the kind of development Lord Darian had ordered them to observe and report.
"Lord Darian," the lead scout reported urgently, "the light elves are intercepting the demon and shopkeeper. The human appears to be unconscious in the demon’s arms. They’re about to engage."
King Darian had been formulating various responses to whatever situation was developing, but hearing that single word—unconscious—completely transformed his strategic calculus.
This changed everything.
The mysterious shopkeeper wasn’t invincible as Darian had begun to suspect. The human could be rendered unconscious, vulnerable, potentially even killed like any other mortal. And if the light elves were fighting desperately to capture or kill him, that meant tensions had escalated to open conflict.
Darian’s mind immediately began working through the implications and opportunities this created. His first instinct was to order immediate assault on the shop itself while the shopkeeper was absent and vulnerable. But he quickly reconsidered that approach.
The light elves would have already attempted to breach the shop’s defenses if such a thing were possible. They had possessed the motivation, opportunity, and forces necessary to do so. If they hadn’t succeeded in entering despite those advantages, that meant the shop possessed protections that operated independently of the shopkeeper’s consciousness.
Which meant the structure itself was likely some kind of ancient artifact or autonomous magical construct beyond their ability to force entry.
But if he could kill the shopkeeper and the demon protecting him before they reached that sanctuary, the mysterious shop and all its miraculous contents would become ownerless. Ancient artifacts typically required a living master to maintain their bindings. With the shopkeeper dead, the shop’s protections might fail entirely, allowing Darian to claim it and all the incredible resources it contained.
The strategic value was almost incomprehensible. Control over an establishment that could produce items capable of elevating practitioners multiple ranks would grant the dark elves overwhelming advantage in their eternal conflict. He could outfit his entire military with enhancements that would make them invincible against the light elves’ conventional forces.
Not only that, he could practically take over the entire world with that shop. The human was indeed foolish in his eyes for not doing so.
