"That could take months!" Jessica interrupted. "Lyra, please. I’m not asking you to abandon your work. I’m asking you to take one day to rest. Just one day. Let your mind and body recover so you can actually think clearly again."

"I can think fine—"

"Really? Because you just wrote the same sentence three times on that parchment."

Lyra looked down and realized Jessica was right. Her exhaustion was affecting her work quality now. But still...

"There’s so much left to do," she said, her voice quieter now, almost pleading. "So many people depending on these laws being implemented correctly. I can’t let them down. I can’t let Satou down."

Jessica studied her friend’s face, seeing not just exhaustion but genuine fear. Fear of failing. Fear of letting people suffer because she hadn’t worked hard enough.

"Lyra," Jessica said gently, placing a hand over Lyra’s trembling one. "You’re not letting anyone down. You’ve done more in three days than most administrators accomplish in three months. But you’re human—well, Hobgoblin—and you need rest. Please. For me. Take tomorrow off."

"I can’t—"

"Then I’m going to talk to Satou," Jessica said firmly. "If you won’t listen to me, maybe you’ll listen to him."

Lyra’s eyes widened slightly. "Don’t bother him with this. He has his own responsibilities—"

But Jessica was already standing, determination clear in her posture. "Someone needs to make you rest, and if it takes the Chief to order you, then that’s what I’ll do."

She walked out before Lyra could protest further, leaving the exhausted administrator alone with her documents and her worry.

Finding Satou

Jessica found Satou in the training grounds, observing Kelvin spar with one of the orc warriors. Her brother had recovered remarkably well from his battle with the Dire Wolves, though he still moved with slight stiffness from healing injuries.

"Big brother," Jessica called out. "Can I talk to you? It’s about Lyra."

Satou’s attention immediately shifted from the sparring match. "What’s wrong? Is she hurt?"

"Not physically," Jessica replied. "But she’s been working herself to death implementing the new laws. She hasn’t slept properly in three days, barely eats, and she’s starting to make mistakes from exhaustion. I tried to convince her to rest, but she won’t listen to me."

Concern crossed Satou’s face. "Where is she now?"

"Administrative building. Probably still working despite the fact that it’s nearly midnight."

Satou nodded. "I’ll talk to her. Thank you for telling me, Jessica."

"Just make her rest," Jessica pleaded. "I don’t care how you do it, but she needs a break before she collapses."

Confronting Lyra

Satou found Lyra exactly where Jessica said she’d be, surrounded by papers, her tea gone cold, her eyes struggling to focus on the words in front of her.

"Lyra," he said from the doorway.

She jumped slightly, not having heard him approach. "Satou! I didn’t expect—I was just finishing up—"

"You’re taking tomorrow off," Satou interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"I can’t," Lyra said immediately. "There’s too much work. The property dispute between the two orc families still needs resolution. The new guard recruits need their final assessment. The education sessions for the newcomers—"

"Can all be handled by other people for one day," Satou finished. "Urgak can mediate the property dispute. Grimnir can assess the recruits. The education sessions can be postponed twenty-four hours. The settlement will not fall apart if you take a single day to rest."

"But—"

"Look at yourself, Lyra." Satou walked into the room, his expression a mixture of concern and frustration. "When was the last time you slept through the night? When was the last time you ate a proper meal? Your hands are shaking. You have dark circles under your eyes. You just wrote the same sentence three times on that document."

Lyra looked down at the parchment, seeing the evidence of her exhaustion staring back at her. "I... I didn’t realize I was that tired."

"Because exhaustion makes you unable to recognize exhaustion," Satou said more gently. He pulled up a chair and sat across from her. "I know you want to do everything perfectly. I know you feel responsible for making sure these laws work. But you’re going to burn yourself out, and then you won’t be able to help anyone."

"There’s just so much at stake," Lyra said, her voice cracking slightly. "If we don’t implement these laws correctly, if people don’t understand them, if we fail to enforce them fairly... everything we’re trying to build falls apart. Those women we rescued, their suffering becomes meaningless if we can’t prevent it from happening again."

"And it will be meaningless if our Chief Administrator collapses from exhaustion before the system is fully established," Satou countered. "Lyra, you’re the most organized, capable administrator I’ve ever met. But you’re not invincible. You need rest. Tomorrow, you’re taking the day off. That’s an order from your chieftain."

Lyra’s jaw set stubbornly. "I don’t take days off. There’s too much to be covered, too many things that only I know how to handle properly. The documentation system, the case files, the scheduling—"

"Can wait one day," Satou insisted. "Or be handled by others. You’ve trained assistants for exactly this reason."

"They’re not ready—"

"They’ll never be ready if you don’t let them try," Satou said. "Lyra, please. I’m asking you as a friend, not just as your chieftain. Take tomorrow off. Rest. Let your mind recover. You’re no good to anyone like this."

Lyra looked at him for a long moment, seeing genuine concern in his eyes. Then she shook her head. "I can’t. I’m sorry, but I can’t. There are too many things that need to be covered, too many details that—"

Satou held up a hand, stopping her mid-sentence. An idea had struck him, something that might actually convince her to rest.

What would make Lyra agree to take a break? What does she want that she’s been too busy or too shy to ask for?

Then he remembered the way she sometimes looked at him when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. The slight blush when their hands accidentally touched during meetings. The extra effort she put into her appearance on days when she knew they’d be working closely together.
