95: What did you do wrong?
The Zheng family mansion, first-floor living room.
The air seemed to freeze.
"Where is he?!"
Zheng Yun supported Old Master Zheng, her palms drenched in cold sweat. Looking at the fruit peels scattered on the floor and the security guards who hung their heads, too afraid to speak, her heart sank halfway.
"Are you all mute? I'm asking you a question!"
Old Master Zheng stamped his cane in anxiety.
Zheng Ziyang adjusted his tie, which had become slightly crooked from his earlier excitement, and walked over with an expression that practically begged for praise.
"Grandpa, First Aunt, are you looking for that pretty boy from just now?"
"He's just a petty thief!"
Zheng Ziyang spoke with spittle flying, describing the scene vividly.
"I already shut down his crappy supermarket during the day! I didn't expect the kid to still be so persistent that he’d actually sneak into our house!"
"While you were upstairs, that kid's hands were dirty. He was just about to stuff our Qing Dynasty vase into his bag!"
"Luckily, I got back just in time!"
"I called the police directly! I had Old Liu take him away!"
"Don't worry, Grandpa! For scum of society like that, I'll make sure he rots in prison! I'll vent this anger for you!"
After Zheng Ziyang finished speaking, he held his head high, waiting for praise from his grandfather and aunt.
However.
What greeted him was not praise.
But a dead silence.
As Old Master Zheng listened to these words, his eyes widened further and further, the whites of his eyes becoming bloodshot. His wrinkled face instantly turned the color of pig liver.
His body began to tremble violently, like a fallen leaf in the wind.
"You! What did you say?!"
"You sent him to the station?!"
"And! And you want him to rot in prison?!"
Old Master Zheng nearly lost his breath. He clutched his chest, a rattling sound coming from his throat; he was so angry he was about to pass out.
"That's right, Grandpa! People like that must be severely punished—"
*Slap!!!*
An incredibly crisp sound of a slap instantly interrupted Zheng Ziyang's attempt to take credit.
Zheng Yun had put all her strength into this slap.
It sent Zheng Ziyang spinning in place, and half of his face immediately swelled up red.
"First Aunt?!"
Zheng Ziyang clutched his face, completely dazed.
"Why did you hit me?!"
"I helped the family catch a thief! If you won't praise me, fine, but you're hitting me over an outsider?!"
"I'll beat you to death, you little animal!!"
Zheng Yun was shaking with rage, her finger trembling as she pointed at Zheng Ziyang.
"Was that a thief?!"
"That was the savior who was going to treat your grandfather's illness! He is the only divine doctor in all of Dragon Country who can save your grandfather's life!!"
"And you had him arrested?!"
"I don't think you wanted to catch a thief! You wanted your grandfather to die!!"
Hearing this, Zheng Ziyang also got angry.
"Divine doctor? Him?"
"First Aunt, you've been scammed! He's just a dishonest merchant who runs a small supermarket! And he steals things!"
"Enough!!"
Chu Yueli, who had been silent until now, spoke up coldly.
"Zheng Ziyang, you really know how to turn black into white."
"Jiaojiao, show them the footage."
Without a word, Chu Jiaojiao picked up a miniature camcorder from the table, brought up the playback, and shoved it right in front of Zheng Yun and Old Master Zheng.
On the small screen.
The image was incredibly clear.
The audio was even clearer.
["I'm just doing my job! It doesn't matter how great your connections are!"]
["Giving them fruit to eat? Eat my ass!!" (He knocks over the fruit platter)]
["I suspect you're the one who stole it, you pauper!... I can send you in, and I can keep you locked up for a lifetime!"]
Every word, every action.
They were like resounding slaps across the faces of the Zheng family.
Where was the thief-catching?
This was clearly an arrogant, lawless, and malicious young master committing an act of private vengeance!
"This is the 'catching a thief' you were talking about?!"
After watching the recording, Old Master Zheng was so angry his vision went dark, and he nearly collapsed.
"Framing others! Foul-mouthed! Lawless!!"
"I, Zheng Guoqiang, have lived an upright life! How did I spawn an animal like you!!"
"You've thrown away all my dignity!!"
Old Master Zheng smashed his cane hard against Zheng Ziyang's shin.
"Ow!!"
Zheng Ziyang let out a scream of pain and jumped up, clutching his leg.
But he was still defiant.
"Grandpa! Even if my methods were a bit extreme! He isn't as divine as you say! You must have been tricked!"
"Shut up!!"
Old Master Zheng didn't listen to his nonsense at all.
The divine doctor was gone!
Arrested by the police!
If the man got angry and refused to treat him, wouldn't his old life be forfeit?
He tremblingly picked up the phone and dialed the director of that district's police station directly.
As soon as the call connected, the old master started shouting:
"Hello?! This is Zheng Guoqiang!!"
"You have someone there named Old Liu! Did he just take someone away from my house?!"
When the director on the other end heard it was his old superior, he immediately stood at attention:
"Old Zheng! There is such a matter! Old Liu reported that he caught a thief who stole antiques! We will certainly punish him severely!"
"Thief your mother's head!!"
Old Master Zheng had never used such profanity in his life.
"That is my honored guest!! My savior!!"
"You didn't even investigate, you just believed whatever you heard?!"
"I'm telling you! If that man is missing even a single hair! Every one of you at that station can strip off your uniforms and get lost!!"
"Get him back to me immediately!! Now!!"
*Slam!!*
The phone hung up.
The director on the other end was scared out of his wits. This was a disaster of biblical proportions!
...At the gate of the Zheng mansion.
The police car hadn't driven off yet.
Old Liu's mobile phone rang. When he answered, the director's roar nearly shattered his eardrums.
"Stop the car! Stop the car now!!"
Old Liu's face turned white with fear as he slammed on the brakes.
He turned back tremulously to look at Lin Chuan, who was sitting in the back seat, handcuffed but looking perfectly at ease.
"That... Mr. Lin!"
"A misunderstanding! It's all a misunderstanding!"
"We received orders from above! Please, let's go back."
Old Liu scrambled out of the car, hurriedly opened the door for Lin Chuan, and tried to unlock his handcuffs.
Lin Chuan, however, pulled his hands back.
"Eh? I find these quite comfortable!"
Lin Chuan leaned back against the seat with a faint smile.
"Why take them off?"
Just then.
A crowd of people came rushing out of the Zheng mansion.
Zheng Yun was supporting Old Master Zheng, and their speed was practically a hundred-meter sprint.
Behind them followed Zheng Ziyang, clutching his face and limping.
And the Chu sisters.
"Divine Doctor Lin!! Please stay!! Please stay!!"
Old Master Zheng shouted from afar, his voice trembling.
Running to the police car and seeing the handcuffs on Lin Chuan's wrists, the old master was nearly moved to tears.
"What a sin!!"
"Quick! Open those handcuffs!!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Lin, it was a misunderstanding! It was all a misunderstanding!"
Old Liu quickly unlocked the handcuffs and stepped aside, bowing and scraping.
Lin Chuan stretched his wrists and slowly stepped out of the car.
But he showed no intention of returning to the Zheng house. Instead, he stood by the car and lit a cigarette.
He took a deep drag and blew the smoke into the night sky.
"Old Zheng."
Lin Chuan's voice was calm, but it carried a bone-chilling coldness.
"Originally, I came all this way late at night out of respect for Long Wu and because I respected you as an old hero."
"I thought treating your illness would be an act of merit and kindness."
Lin Chuan glanced at Zheng Ziyang, who was standing in the back.
"During the day, this fellow brought people and inexplicably shut down my Second Brother's supermarket."
"Then tonight."
"I came with good intentions to treat you, and before I even started, I was arrested as a thief."
"And I was going to be sent to prison for a lifetime?"
"Heh."
Lin Chuan gave a cold laugh, threw the cigarette butt on the ground, and crushed it.
"Even a clay man has a bit of a temper."
"I, Lin Chuan, may just be a small businessman, but I'm not a soft persimmon that can be squeezed by anyone."
"As for this illness, you should find someone more capable."
Having said that, Lin Chuan turned to leave.
This departure was practically a death sentence for Old Master Zheng!
"Don't!! Divine doctor, don't go!!"
Old Master Zheng was scared out of his wits. He grabbed Lin Chuan's sleeve, nearly kneeling before him.
"It's all my fault! My Zheng family failed to educate our son properly!"
"Please, don't lower yourself to that animal's level!"
Old Master Zheng suddenly turned around, pointing his cane at Zheng Ziyang.
His gaze looked as if it could devour a person.
"You little animal!!"
"Get over here!!"
Zheng Ziyang shuffled over, his expression incredibly ugly.
"Grandpa..."
"Kneel down!!!"
Old Master Zheng gave a thunderous roar.
"Kneel for Divine Doctor Lin!! Apologize!!!"
Zheng Ziyang's whole body shook as he looked at his grandfather in disbelief.
"Kneel? Kneel down?"
"Grandpa! I'm Zheng Ziyang! I'm a dignified Bureau Chief!"
"In public, with outsiders watching?"
Most importantly, Chu Yueli was watching right there!
That was the woman he had always wanted to have!
If he knelt before his love rival in front of his beloved woman!
How could he ever face anyone again?
Where would his dignity go?
"I won't kneel!!"
Zheng Ziyang stiffened his neck, his stubborn streak flaring up.
"I didn't do anything wrong! It was he who didn't explain things clearly at the time."
"Good! Good! Good!"
Old Master Zheng laughed in extreme anger, a flash of determination in his eyes.
"You won't kneel, right?"
"Fine!"
"Then I'll kneel!!"
As he spoke, Old Master Zheng actually threw his cane aside, his knees buckling as he prepared to kneel on the ground.
"Dad!! What are you doing!!"
Zheng Yun was terrified and hurriedly held onto her father.
This scene left everyone dumbfounded.
The dignified head of the Zheng family, a hero of the older generation, was actually going to kneel before a young man just to stay alive?
If this got out, what would happen to the Zheng family's reputation?
"Animal!! You still won't kneel?!"
Zheng Yun turned her head and let out a shrill scream at Zheng Ziyang.
"Do you want to drive your grandfather to his death?!"
"Do you want your grandfather to die right in front of you now?!!"
"If you have even a shred of conscience! Even a bit of humanity! Then kneel down for me!!"
Zheng Ziyang looked at his grandfather struggling to kneel and at his aunt's hysterical shouting.
His psychological defenses finally collapsed.
He might be bad, and he might be stupid.
But he wasn't so bad that he could watch his own grandfather die.
Moreover, if his grandfather really died today because he didn't kneel.
Then he could forget about ever surviving in the Zheng family, or even in all of Harbin!
He would be pointed at by a thousand fingers and cursed by ten thousand people!
*Thud!!*
Zheng Ziyang's knees slammed heavily onto the ground.
With his head lowered, his face turned the color of pig liver, and his teeth ground together.
Tears welled in his eyes—tears of humiliation.
In front of Chu Yueli.
In front of all his subordinates, security guards, and relatives.
He, Zheng Ziyang, the insufferable Young Master Zheng.
Knelt before the upstart he had always looked down upon.
"Mr... Mr. Lin..."
Zheng Ziyang squeezed these words from between his teeth, his voice as quiet as a mosquito's buzz.
"I'm sorry!"
"I was wrong!"
Lin Chuan stood before him, looking down at this once-arrogant young master.
There wasn't a hint of pity in his eyes.
"What did you say?"
Lin Chuan picked at his ear.
"The wind is too strong, I can't hear you."
Zheng Ziyang clenched his fists so hard his nails dug into his flesh.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then suddenly shouted out:
"I'M SORRY!!!"
"IT WAS MY FAULT!!"
"What did you do wrong?" Lin Chuan smiled faintly.
"I... I shouldn't have shut down your supermarket!!"
"I'll have someone tear off the seals immediately!!"
"I shouldn't have said you stole things!!"
After finished shouting this, Zheng Ziyang seemed to have all his strength drained away, collapsing onto the ground.
His dignity, in this moment, was shattered into pieces.
Chu Yueli watched from the side, a cold sneer curling her lips.
He deserved it.
Meanwhile, Chu Jiaojiao held the camcorder a bit higher.
This wonderful scene had to be well-preserved so she could take it out and enjoy it whenever she felt like it.
