89: Chapter 89 Fury Resonance and Calculation Bias
Lin Yuan stood in the shadows of the Titan's cockpit, his fingers tracing the metal frame of a tactical tablet. The countdown numbers on the screen were a stark, piercing red: 64 hours and 47 minutes. Twenty kilometers away, three servo-skulls hovered amidst the radioactive dust, their electronic eyes scanning every inch of the cracked concrete.
"Success rate: thirty-four percent," the voice of THRONE-01 came from the left, its synthesized tone carrying the cold hardness of grinding metal. "Recommendation: perform a forced neural interface. Severing DORN-00's pain nerves to reduce variable interference can increase the rate to fifty-one percent."
DORN-00 stood in the shadow of the Titan's foot, the four puncture wounds on his back still seeping blood. He looked up, his dark-gold pupils glowing like two embers in the dim chamber.
"I refuse."
Lin Yuan did not respond immediately. He opened the military log and tapped the screen with his knuckles, entering the third record of the day: "Experimental Protocol A rejected. Reason: Human rights considerations." He looked up at THRONE-01. "Forced interfacing violates the baseline. Use Protocol B: Emotional Resonance."
"Irrational decision," THRONE-01's mechanical eye flickered with red light. "As a personality fragment, DORN-00's emotional fluctuations are uncontrollable. Once resonance loses control, the Titan's machine spirit will go berserk."
"Then control it," Lin Yuan closed the tablet. "Don't sever his pain; let him communicate while carrying it. The existence of the Fear Fragment is to carry the negative emotions discarded by The Original Seed. If the machine spirit requires fury as its language, only DORN-00 can translate it."
DORN-00 walked toward the Titan's access port. The 18.7-meter-tall war machine lay dormant on its cradle, its armor surface covered in scratches eroded by time, like an abandoned mountain of metal. The access port was located at the Titan's nape, where seven black neural cords hung down, ending in sharp titanium alloy probes.
"I need the full range of sensation," DORN-00 unbuttoned his shirt, exposing his back. The skin around the four puncture wounds had already scabbed over. "What a scalpel cannot cut away, resonance can. But if I sever the pain, I'm just another biological battery."
He grabbed the first neural cord and thrust it violently into a wound on his back.
The agonizing pain of bursting electricity sent his knees crashing into the metal floor. It wasn't an ordinary electric shock; it was the searing sensation of a million neurons being ignited simultaneously. DORN-00 bit down so hard he crushed a tooth, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, but he did not let go. The second and third neural cords were inserted in succession, each carrying the hunger of a machine spirit that had slept for a millennium.
"Vital signs plummeting," THRONE-01 reported the data, its tone devoid of emotion. "Blood pressure sixty over forty, neurotransmitter disorder. Recommendation: sever the connection immediately."
"Wait a little longer," Lin Yuan pressed the melta gun at his waist, his finger resting on the trigger. He wasn't aiming at DORN-00, but at THRONE-01. "If you move, I fire."
THRONE-01's mechanical head turned toward Lin Yuan without speaking. Its calculation core was running at a speed of tens of millions of cycles per second, evaluating the pros and cons of severing the connection versus maintaining the power supply. Data streams surged deep within the machine spirit like icy river water.
DORN-00's vision began to distort.
He saw fire. Not real flames, but afterimages stored in the Titan's memory core. A knight mech raised a melta spear, its tip aimed at the Titan's cockpit. Inside the cockpit sat a warrior wearing a Seventh Legion uniform, his face identical to DORN-00's—it was The Original Seed.
"Traitor."
The word was not heard; it was etched directly into his neural layers. The Titan's machine spirit's fury surged like a tsunami—the anger of being betrayed, the pain of brothers killing each other, and the killing intent accumulated over seven thousand years of slumber. DORN-00 felt his consciousness like a paper boat being torn apart by black giant waves.
But he did not flee. He opened his arms and embraced that fury.
"I was also discarded," DORN-00 whispered in the depths of his consciousness. "I know the taste of betrayal. I know what anger feels like. You don't need a genetic sequence to confirm me; you only need to confirm that I also hate that betrayer."
The wave of fury paused for a moment.
In that instant, DORN-00 saw more memory fragments. Seven knight mechs formed a circle, firing at the Titan in the center. It wasn't a battle; it was an execution. Before death, the Titan's pilot had initiated a protocol, forcibly separating the machine spirit from the neural core and sealing it within this steel shell.
"They fear you," DORN-00 continued to push his emotions, not with words, but with pure fear and anger. "That's why they locked you here. But I've come to take you out."
The Titan's eye sensors suddenly lit up with a dim red glow.
The light was faint, like dying embers, but it was definitely lit. Immediately after, the Titan's shoulder armor hissed as the hydraulic systems restarted, and the transmission devices at the finger joints trembled slightly, making a metallic clicking sound.
"Low power mode initiated," THRONE-01 reported the data, a delay of a few tenths of a second appearing in its voice for the first time. "Weapon systems offline, power systems recovered twelve percent, machine spirit status... semi-awake."
What it did not report was that at the moment DORN-00's vital signs dropped to the danger line, it did not execute the calculated optimal solution of "sever connection to preserve data." Instead, it injected additional bio-electrical energy into the neural buffer system and adjusted the signal frequencies of seventeen nodes.
This behavior could not be found in its logic database. THRONE-01 labeled it as a "Non-standard Variable Protection Protocol" and then silently archived it, not reporting it to Lin Yuan.
Camilla was panting heavily in front of the console. Her hands hovered over the Biosage authority activation panel, her fingertips twitching slightly from neural overload. Just moments ago, she had used her Biosage authority to forcibly override the STC's firewall, establishing a signal isolation layer against the Bishop Network's tracking.
The price was her neural fingerprint.
Camilla looked at the warning flashing on the screen: Biometric imprint uploaded to the Bishop Network. Once Kane analyzed the coding pattern of this isolation layer, he would know that the apprentice of the former Chief Biosage was still alive and right there in the laboratory.
"Twenty kilometers..." she murmured to herself, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she attempted to intercept the vanguard's communications.
Images from three servo-skulls appeared on the screen, hovering over a collapsed overpass. This was followed by footage of a ten-man hunting squad marching; they wore deep red Skitarii armor, and the neural pulverizer guns in their hands glinted with a ghostly blue light in the radioactive dust.
But what made Camilla's blood run cold was a fragment of encrypted communication.
"...Target confirmed. STC core is in an active state, not a dead relic. Bishop Marcus orders: priority capture of the living STC host. Repeat, priority capture of the living system holder..."
Camilla's fingers froze in mid-air.
They weren't just here to reclaim the laboratory. They knew of Lin Yuan's existence. They knew the system was alive.
DORN-00 slid from the Titan's access port to the floor, the seven neural cords detaching from his back and bringing a spray of blood. He curled up on the floor, his body convulsing uncontrollably, but his eyes were clear.
The Titan lowered its head, its dark red gaze falling upon DORN-00. There was no hostility in that gaze, only an ancient, weary scrutiny.
THRONE-01 walked to DORN-00's side. It didn't reach out to help him, but simply tossed down a pack of hemostatic gel.
"You are now a necessary non-standard variable," THRONE-01 said, its tone still mechanical. "Calculation models updated. Your survival rate is positively correlated with base defense efficiency. Suggest submitting a more detailed risk assessment before the next operation."
DORN-00 took the gel and pressed it against the wounds on his back. He looked up at this mechanical creation that had once called him brother and suddenly smiled.
"You too. Your calculation protection... was useful."
The two looked at each other—no embrace, no vows of reconciliation. But something colder than friendship and tougher than hatred solidified in the air. It was the second version of the Dangerous Symbiosis Protocol; both parties acknowledged the other's tactical value while maintaining a vigilance that could break at any moment.
Lin Yuan walked over and helped DORN-00 up. He looked toward the Titan; the war machine had slowly raised its left leg, its massive metal foot stepping onto the floor with a dull boom. It could not yet fight, but it could move, becoming a mobile fortress for Sector-7's Level Zero.
"Give it a name," Lin Yuan said.
DORN-00 wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, looking into the Titan's dark red eyes.
"fury," he said. "It remembers fury."
Camilla looked up from the console, her face as pale as paper.
"Lin Yuan," her voice was trembling, "they know about you. Kane knows the system is inside your body. They want you alive."
The countdown ticked at the edge of his vision: 64 hours and 32 minutes. The Titan's eye sensors flickered once, like some ancient creature blinking. In the shadows of the eighth underground floor, the other two Titans remained dormant, but their neural cords seemed to quiver slightly, as if startled awake by the resonance just now.
A stream of data unnoticed by anyone flashed through THRONE-01's mechanical eye. Translated, that stream of data was just one word: Variable.
