Chapter 145: The Library
Ethan calmly went over the new system mission, it was pretty simple, create a shield around Earth that was capable of stopping any from of external intrusion. In other words, a planetary defensive system. Now, would the various world governments allow him to? Probably not.
Especially if he refused to be in any of their controls, hence the reason why the system suggested world dominance.
Was it going to be easy?
Absolutely not, but he was Ethan Carter. He already had a plan prepared, one that had been underway since before OmniMed was announced.
Now the Vitaband didn’t seem like much, but it was a way to slowly ease into his plan.
Like Sentinel, the Vitaband was a form of data collection. They collected really importantly information that he’d upload to the simulation chamber.
Now, what was his final plan after all that? You’d just have to wait and find out, but for now, Ethan had something else to check out.
"System," he called out, "open the library."
[Right away,] the system responded.
[You have entered the OmniTech System Library.]
The scenery around him suddenly started changing, one moment he was sitting on his couch, the next, he was pulled into the void.
He traveled for a short while
Ethan turned slowly, his minds taking in every single detail. "So this is the library," he murmured. "Doesn’t look like any one I’ve seen before."
[This library is not just for storage of information, but of concepts,] the System clarified. [Every discovery, invention, or fragment of knowledge you acquire can be reconstructed here, in its purest logical form. You can explore, disassemble, or simulate their evolution without limitations.]
"In other words," he muttered as he looked around, stream of data arranging themselves like rows of shelves, "a room for replicating tech?"
[Not quite,] the system responded, [the tech development interface is responsible for tech replication, but the library can replicate anything I consider as information.]
"I see," Ethan nodded in understanding, while walking around the space.
"So this is where everything I’ve learned is stored," he murmured, watching as a floating construct split open into like a book, revealing every random thought he had ever since he split his mind. "How...efficient."
[Efficient, but also infinite,] the System corrected. [The OmniTech Library is a dimensional construct. It expands proportionally to the user’s intellect and discoveries. The more you understand, the more it grows.]
Ethan raised a brow. "So, in short... a digital reflection of my mind?"
[In essence, yes. Every fragment of data you input and every observation you make, is recorded here. Even your thoughts, when unfocused is stored here.]
That made him pause. "So I could technically... develop theories just by thinking about them?"
[Correct. The Library will automatically translate them into structured data for analysis.]
A faint smirk tugged at his lips. "That’s convenient."
He stretched a hand toward one of the floating orbs, and immediately, the orb turned into a holographic projection of Sentinel... More specifically, its code.
He had switched from Python to Prometheus, since he had more than enough SP.
The coding language looked unlike any on earth but Ethan could perfectly understand it since the knowledge was uploaded into his brain.
The new code made Sentinel run a lot faster and although there was no public compiler, it could easily run on any system.
If his opponents were having trouble copying a simple python code, then they would be having a nightmare trying to even comprehend this one.
And that included the Vigilants right now, since they were eager to hack into it to get that reward Ethan had promised on success.
There was a small smile on his face as he thought about it, but soon shook his head, this wasn’t the time to be thinking about how much harder he had made the challenge for his underlings.
Now was the time to find out exactly what this library does. As always, information on every new System feature could always be directly uploaded into his mind whenever he wanted and among that info was a pretty cool feature about the lab.
The holographic section....
Well, maybe not so cool when compared to the simulation chair Ethan had made but still pretty cool.
He walked deeper into the library, walking past certain thoughts that he’d definitely delete later since they were either important or concepts he didn’t want to talk about.
He paused when he reached a large circular platform suspended in the middle of the endless data field.
Dozens of glowing lines were spiraling above it, forming a slowly rotating sphere of pure light, kind of like a mini sun but made of data.
[Holographic Section activated.]
He smiled faintly. "Let’s start by running a projection."
[Specify target.]
"The Earth," he said simply, "and every technological and environmental parameter connected to it."
The mini sun made of data changed and in its place the planet appeared, a perfect digital Earth, rotating slowly above the circular platform.
"This..." Ethan whispered, eyes locked on a certain position on the glowing sphere. "This is where I’ll build the shield."
[And how will you begin?]
Ethan’s smirk widened, his mind already spinning with possibilities.
"By finding out how much power it’ll take to make the impossible, possible."
And for that, he allowed ONI to give him back all seven minds at once.
Why?
Well, there was no way a sane mind would be able to achieve what he wanted to.
This wasn’t time to restrict his minds, besides, the more he used it, the more he got used to it.
Ethan suspected that he’d soon be able to maintain all at the same time without the risk of losing himself or even his memories.
There was really not much change since, unlike the system, ONI didn’t restrict the other four minds, they were just placed in a kind of dormant mode.
Now that they were all active, there wasn’t much difference, since ONI still helped with him keeping them all focused unlike before when they spiraled into random calculations.
"Alright, let’s get to work." Ethan said as he started pulling all the knowledge he had acquired related to his goal from the digital shelf and started work.
****
The rest of the day, that’s how long Ethan was in the system Library for...which was a larger amount of the day.
To anyone else, he was just calmly sleeping on his couch but he was actually spending the rest of his day researching and coming up with ideas for a shield that would cover the entire earth.
He’d spent hours inside, but to his seven minds, weeks had passed.
"Status," he muttered.
[Current simulation clusters: 2,047. Viable results: 43. Incomplete or unstable models: 2,004.]
Ethan exhaled, running a hand through his hair. His minds had worked together relentlessly, but the sheer scale of the project was insane.
Even the most advanced modern infrastructure couldn’t generate enough power for a true planetary barrier, not without collapsing half the global grid in the process.
Still, he had made progress. Significant progress.
[Most efficient theoretical configuration achieved under Project Aegis Prototype 0.3. Estimated coverage: 64%. Energy stability: 38%. Sustainability period: 11 minutes, 27 seconds before full collapse.]
That got a dry laugh from him. "So, barely enough time to stop a rock from sneezing at us."
[Correct,] the System replied without humor.
"I see," he muttered.
He hadn’t expected to achieve even this much in such short time, so that was progress enough, besides, there was a solution to the power issue.
His orbs.
The theoretical infinite energy orbs. Now, it had burnt when he tried to use it with his simulation chair, but it was working for a couple of minutes before that happened.
And now that he had the library, he’d And now that he had the library, he’d finally be able to figure out what went wrong.
He’d also be able to finally complete it.
But for now, he was exhausted so he had to rest, besides, he still had a couple of months to a year so he could take it slow and not rush.
Though, he wanted to be prepared as much as possible, hurrying would just cause mistakes and if those mistakes only showed up at the time he needed the shield, then it’d only spell disaster.
With a sigh, he logged out of the system Library and his eyes reopened in the real world, his blue eyes locking on the ceiling above him.
Ethan let out a small sigh as he continued laying on the couch, he hadn’t really had time to sit and think but,
Aliens really were real.
And they were coming for Earth in less than five years and it was all up to him to make sure that Earth was prepared for their inevitable arrival.
Was it a bit overwhelming?
Yes, but was he scared? Not in the least bit.
He might be facing a technologically advanced species, but with the system, he was sure Earth would soon match them..
They just needed time, time which was quickly running out.
