149: Chapter 149 Awakening of the Void
Deep space was deathly silent; the galaxy shed tears.
The ultimate battlefield spanning three galactic sectors was now nothing more than a field of torn space-time wreckage. Against the pitch-black cosmic backdrop floated billions of dim stellar fragments, faint purple ripples left behind by shattered energy shields, metallic shards from disintegrated interstellar warships, and the massive remains of the shadow of the end—large enough to envelop half a star cluster. Like a dark canopy cleaved by a giant axe, it was drifting, dissolving, and returning to silence within the void at an agonizingly slow pace.
This was the final battle for the survival of civilization.
Led by the Interstellar Alliance, and joined by the remnants of the Sower, the Dimensional Watchers, the Ancient Astral Spirits, the Mechanical Divine Dynasty, and even ancient wills that had existed since the dawn of the universe, they exhausted all their combat power. Burning the energy of a hundred billion stars and sacrificing the space-time laws of dozens of dimensions, they finally completely defeated the shadow of the end, whose mission was to 'erase emotions, reset civilization, and solidify absolute order.'
No one remembered how long this war had lasted.
Some said it was three cosmic eras.
Some said the seeds were sown from the very first moment light and darkness separated.
Still others said that the shadow of the end was originally a product of the universe's self-correction; its existence was meant to purge all out-of-control emotions, chaotic civilizations, and disordered evolution, returning the universe to an absolutely cold, absolutely regular, and absolutely static 'perfect state.'
To defeat it, countless civilizations turned to ash, countless experts burned out their divine souls, and countless planets became mere specks of dust in the cosmos.
Kate was suspended in the void, her body wrapped in the pale gold power of the sound of origin—the primordial light of the universe and the source of all life and order. Her armor had long since shattered, the energy core in her left chest flickered with a dying light, and the bones of her right arm were exposed, entwined with the corrosive black marks of the power of the end. Every breath felt like her lungs were being torn apart.
Her gaze pierced through layers of space-time turbulence, landing on that dissipating dark body in the distance.
The shadow of the end was dead.
This thought was like a warm current, instantly breaking her nerves which had been strained to the limit. She almost lost all her strength, allowing herself to float and fall within the void, descending into that eternal peace where there was no pain, no war, and no mission.
Beside her, the surviving experts were similarly lost in a brief daze.
The last flagship of the Interstellar Alliance's Supreme Command, 'the watcher,' was covered in deep, bone-chilling cracks. Its main cannon barrel was twisted like a pretzel, the bridge glass was long shattered, and the admirals in the command room were covered in blood. Yet, they still stood with straight backs, watching the life signs of the shadow of the end on the screen drop completely to zero.
"Victory... we've won..."
Someone murmured in a low, hoarse voice, trembling with blood-soaked emotion.
"Soldiers of the Alliance... we held... we held onto our emotions, we held onto civilization, we held onto the meaning of our existence..."
The Mechanical Sovereign of the Mechanical Divine Dynasty had its metallic body covered in bullet holes and energy burn marks. Pale blue data streams flowed from its core chip—the unique 'joy' of the Mechanical Civilization. They had once been judged as 'disordered mechanical entities' by the shadow of the end and nearly faced complete formatting; now, they had finally broken free from the fate of erasure.
The ethereal bodies of the Ancient Astral Spirits flickered with a faint light. They had lost half their kin, and their psionic cores were on the verge of shattering, yet they still chanted prayers of victory in the ancient Star Spirit language, their voices ethereal and sorrowful.
The Dimensional Watchers propped up the final dimensional barrier, shielding the remaining life within. Their bodies were already semi-transparent, liable to turn into dimensional fragments at any moment, yet they still held fast to their mission: to guard all existing dimensions from being swallowed by nothingness.
Everyone thought it was over.
Everyone thought the darkness had dispersed and light was about to shroud the universe once more.
Everyone thought the victory they had bought with their lives and blood would be a new beginning for the universe.
No one knew that this was not the end.
This was merely—the prologue to the true end.
Kate slightly closed her eyes, attempting to mobilize the power of the sound of origin to repair her broken body while soothing the faint remaining consciousnesses on the battlefield. She could feel the fluctuations of countless lives—fear, exhaustion, joy, relief... these emotions were exactly what the shadow of the end wanted to erase, and exactly what they had fought to the death to protect.
Emotion is not a burden, not an excuse for entropy, and not the original sin of civilization.
Emotion is the reason for civilization to live on, the belief that experts fight for, and the root of why the universe is vivid, warm, and possesses infinite possibilities.
Just as Kate's fingertips touched a strand of warm life fluctuation—
Dead silence descended.
It wasn't the cold, emotion-suppressing silence of the shadow of the end.
It was an older, more thorough, and more terrifying—nothingness.
As if in the state before the universe was born, there was no light, no darkness, no time, no space, no matter, no energy, no rules, and no existence.
Nothing existed.
"Hum—"
A vibration that could not be described in words suddenly erupted from the deepest parts of space-time, from the lowest levels of the dimensions, and from the cracks between all existence and non-existence.
This was not a sound wave, not an energy wave, not a psionic wave, and not a space-time wave.
This was the vibration of nothingness itself.
It penetrated all barriers, ignored all defenses, bypassed all dimensions, and was directly branded into the deepest part of the soul of every conscious living being.
Kate snapped her eyes open, her pupils instantly shrinking to the size of pinpricks.
She felt it.
It was a terrifying will that far exceeded the shadow of the end, an ancient existence that stood above the sound of origin, an ultimate malice that intended to thoroughly erase even the concept of 'existence.'
In the next second, a horrific scene occurred.
The Interstellar Alliance's Seventh Fleet, closest to the battlefield, consisted of three thousand of the latest Stellar Star-Destroyers that had just finished charging their energy to fire a victory salute. Their shields were at full power, their main cannons were energized, and the crew members were cheering in the command rooms, looking out at the gradually calming space-time turbulence with eyes full of hope for the future.
However—
The power of nothingness swept through.
There was no light, no explosion, no loud noise, and no energy impact.
Three thousand Stellar Star-Destroyers vanished into thin air.
As if they had never existed.
The shields didn't break, the main cannons didn't detonate, the hulls didn't shatter—not even a speck of metal, a strand of residual energy, or a single cry of a living being was left behind.
Complete nothingness, complete annihilation, complete return to zero.
Kate's heart constricted violently, and an unprecedented, extreme fear surged frantically from the depths of her soul.
She had seen the shadow of the end erase civilizations, seen stars explode to swallow planets, and seen dimensions collapse to annihilate everything, but she had never seen a sight like this—the direct erasure of existence itself.
"No... impossible..."
On the Alliance Command's flagship, the watcher, the Alliance's Supreme Admiral trembled all over, staring at the coordinates of the Seventh Fleet which had been instantly cleared from the screen. His fingers tapped the console stiffly, "Alert! Alert! Unknown energy detected! Detecting... an energy signature that doesn't exist!"
Alarms blared frantically within the bridge, but they were nothing but a mess of garbled code.
All detection instruments failed, all energy radars went black, and all space-time positioning became disordered.
They could not detect anything because—that thing was simply not within the scope of 'existence.'
The Mechanical Sovereign's core chip instantly overloaded, its pale blue data streams turning into red warning code. It turned its metallic head toward the direction where the nothingness was spreading and issued the highest-level warning of the Mechanical Civilization:
"Warning! antimatter singularity fluctuation detected! Level: Universe-class destruction! Threat level: Unassessable!"
"Warning! This existence surpasses existing universal rules! Surpasses the shadow of the end! Surpasses the sound of origin!"
"Warning! Void erosion has begun! Universal existence value is rapidly declining!"
The ethereal bodies of the Ancient Astral Spirits trembled violently. Their ancient memories were instantly awakened, and a terrifying legend that had been sealed for countless cosmic eras spread frantically through the psionic network:
"It's it... it's that existence that was sealed by the sound of origin..."
"Older than light and darkness, more primal than time and space..."
"Lord of the Void... it has returned..."
The dimensional barrier propped up by the Dimensional Watchers cracked, shattered, and dissipated like thin paper before the power of nothingness. Their ethereal forms became transparent at a speed visible to the naked eye. One by one, the watchers let out silent cries, turning into dimensional fragments and being completely swallowed by the nothingness.
"Hold the dimensions! Guard our existence!"
the watchers' leader let out a final roar, burning his entire dimensional core, "It wants to swallow everything! To reset the universe to nothingness! We cannot let it succeed!"
However, it was all in vain.
The power of nothingness expanded at an unimaginable speed. Wherever it passed, stars were extinguished, space-time collapsed, energy dissipated, and life was annihilated.
The Second Fleet, the Third Fleet, the Ninth Fleet... the tens of thousands of remaining warships of the Interstellar Alliance vanished one after another without leaving a single trace.
Fine cracks began to appear on the bridge glass of the flagship the watcher. Within those cracks was pure darkness—no matter, no light.
The admirals in the command room were pulled into the nothingness one by one, disappearing into the air without a scream or a struggle, as if they had never existed.
"Quick! Retreat!"
"Leave this star sector! Get away from the nothingness!"
"It's not the shadow of the end! It's an existence ten thousand times more terrifying than the shadow of the end!"
The surviving experts fled in all directions, but there was nowhere to run.
The nothingness had no boundaries, no direction, and no speed; it was just there, it was everywhere, and it was swallowing the entire universe.
Kate stared fixedly at the center of the darkness that was swallowing everything. She saw it—
The remains of the shadow of the end, that massive dark body, were being frantically pulled, swallowed, and absorbed by the nothingness.
Those pitch-black fragments representing 'absolute order,' 'emotionlessness,' and 'universal correction' were as tiny, fragile, and powerless as ants before the power of nothingness.
The last remaining core fragment of the shadow of the end, the final vessel of its consciousness and the source of the power that had once ruled half the universe, was now trembling frantically, struggling, and letting out a shrill, pathetic wail.
It was a sound Kate had never heard before.
It wasn't a cold command, a proud judgment, or a heartless erasure.
It was fear.
Extreme fear.
The shadow of the end, that existence which viewed all emotions as ants, all civilizations as data, and all life as trash, was actually feeling fear at this moment.
It was afraid.
It was pleading for help.
"Kate..."
The fragment of the shadow of the end, using its last sliver of consciousness, issued a voice so faint it was nearly gone, passing through the barriers of nothingness and into Kate's soul, "Save me... I beg of you... save me..."
Kate was stunned.
She had fought the shadow of the end for countless years; they were mortal enemies who could not coexist.
The shadow of the end had wanted to erase her emotions, destroy her beliefs, and turn her into a puppet under absolute order.
She had wanted to defeat the shadow of the end to protect emotions, protect civilization, and protect all the beauty in the universe.
They were natural enemies, rivals, and opposite sides that would never compromise.
But now, the shadow of the end was pleading with her for help.
"It is not... not of our kind..." the fragment of the shadow of the end continued to tremble as it spoke, its voice broken and liable to dissipate at any moment, "I... I only wanted to cull emotions, to solidify order... so that the universe would no longer be in chaos..."
"I never intended... to destroy existence itself..."
"It... what it wants to destroy... is not just emotions... not just order... not just life..."
"It wants to destroy... even existence..."
"It wants to reset the entire universe... to... nothingness..."
Kate's soul shook violently.
She finally understood.
The shadow of the end was nothing more than a clown.
Its so-called "Cosmic Correction" and "absolute order" were nothing more than a ridiculous farce in the face of true ultimate darkness.
What the shadow of the end wanted was a universe of order without emotion.
And what the Lord of the Void wanted was a universe of nothingness without anything at all.
One still retained the concept of "existence."
The other sought to completely erase even "existence" itself.
The difference was clear; the horror was immediate.
"Don't... don't let it devour me..." The fragments of the shadow of the end let out a final plea. "If it devours me... it will evolve into... its Complete Form..."
"By then... in the entire universe... no existence... will be able to stop it..."
"Kate... you are the successor to the sound of origin... you are the only one... who might... be able to stop it..."
"I beg you... destroy me... don't let it... obtain my power..."
A massive wave surged in Kate's heart.
She wanted to act, to mobilize the power of the sound of origin and destroy the final fragments of the shadow of the end, preventing the Lord of the Void from obtaining the nourishment for its evolution.
But she couldn't do it.
The power of nothingness had already locked onto her firmly. Before nothingness, the power of the sound of origin was like a candle flame before a black hole, so weak it was almost imperceptible. Her body was suppressed by nothingness, unable to move or strike, only able to watch helplessly.
Watching the fragments of the shadow of the end being pulled, devoured, and absorbed bit by bit by the nothingness.
Watching that darkness grow denser, larger, and more terrifying.
"No—!"
Kate let out a heart-wrenching roar. The power of the sound of origin erupted frantically within her body, its pale gold light breaking through the suppression of nothingness and illuminating this silent star region.
However, it was all too late.
"Pffft—"
The final fragments of the shadow of the end were completely devoured by the nothingness.
No sound, no light, no fluctuations.
Completely gone.
The next moment—
The Lord of the Void awakened.
That void of darkness that had devoured everything began to slowly condense, shrink, and take shape.
It was no longer aimless nothingness, but had transformed into a towering figure spanning millions of light-years.
It had no fixed form; at times it distorted time and space like a black hole, at others it flickered with pitch-black light like a stream of antimatter, sometimes dissolving all rules like the power of chaos, and sometimes erasing all existence like the primordial void.
Its body was composed of pure antimatter, and at its core was a constantly collapsing, devouring, and expanding—antimatter singularity.
It was the opposite side of the universe, the terminator of existence, the end of all things.
The Lord of the Void, Complete Form.
Older than the sound of origin, more powerful than the shadow of the end, and more primordial than the universe itself.
It slowly "opened" its "eyes."
Those were not biological eyes, nor pupils of energy, nor points of psionic light.
It was the core of the antimatter singularity, a bottomless darkness, an abyss of devouring from which even light could not escape.
Its gaze swept across the entire battlefield.
It swept past the remaining Interstellar Alliance warships, the Mechanical Sovereign, the Ancient Astral Spirits, the Dimensional Watcherss, and all remaining life and civilizations, finally landing on Kate.
"Insignificant creature."
The voice of the Lord of the Void did not travel through any medium but was directly imprinted deep into the souls of every living being that still possessed consciousness.
Cold, indifferent, heartless, and arrogant, carrying an absolute authority that transcended all rules, all existence, and all universes.
It felt no anger, no joy, no disgust, and no emotion whatsoever.
Because in its eyes, emotion wasn't even worth as much as dust.
"The shadow of the end was but a ridiculous imitator."
The Lord of the Void spoke slowly, its voice echoing within their souls, causing the consciousness of all living beings to tremble. "It attempted to approach nothingness by stripping away emotion, yet it remained forever trapped within the shackles of order, unable to break free."
"It believed that erasing emotion was the ultimate end of the universe."
"It believed that solidifying order was the meaning of existence."
"Foolish."
A single word, light as a feather, yet it felt like billions of stars crashing into the hearts of all living beings.
The shadow of the end, that terrifying existence that made the entire universe tremble with fear, was merely "foolish" in the words of the Lord of the Void.
"Emotion?"
The Lord of the Void's gaze fell upon Kate once more, upon the power of the sound of origin within her that represented emotion and life, letting out a disdainful scoff—even though it had no emotions, it could still express ultimate contempt.
"Emotion is but an excuse for entropy increase."
"Life is chaotic because of emotion, civilizations war because of emotion, and the universe increases in entropy because of emotion, eventually heading toward destruction."
"Your so-called love, hate, joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure—your so-called hope, faith, persistence, and protection—are but catalysts for the heat death of the universe, nothing more than the poison of self-destruction."
It gently raised an "arm" composed of antimatter.
The last ten remaining Interstellar Alliance escape pods, carrying the Alliance's final soldiers and their families, were desperately pushing their engines to flee this star region of death, their eyes filled with a longing for survival.
The Lord of the Void's fingertips gave a gentle pinch.
"Pffft."
The ten escape pods vanished into thin air.
Completely annihilated, completely voided, completely non-existent.
Not a single trace, not a single remnant.
"Do you see?" The voice of the Lord of the Void remained indifferent. "The longing brought by emotion, the will to survive—they are meaningless before nothingness."
It raised its hand again, pointing toward a complete star region in the distance.
There were billions of stars, tens of millions of civilizations, countless vibrant lives, complete rules of time and space, order, emotion, and all the beauty of existence.
The Lord of the Void's fingertip tapped gently.
"Boom—!"
This time, there was a sound.
Not an explosion, not a collapse, but the sound of space-time returning to zero.
That complete star region, along with the stars, planets, civilizations, lives, rules, and space-time within it, was completely reset to zero in an instant.
From something to nothing.
From existence to non-existence.
With just a single finger.
The entire universe trembled because of it.
"Order?"
The Lord of the Void continued to speak, its gaze sweeping over the Mechanical Sovereign and the Ancient Astral Spirits, over all existences that upheld order. "Order is an even more illusory shackle."
"The sound of origin created order, created life, created emotion, and created all these chaotic and ridiculous existences."
"It believed that the separation of light and dark, the birth of time and space, and the evolution of matter and energy were the perfection of the universe."
"It believed that protecting life, protecting emotion, and protecting order were its mission."
"Equally foolish."
Its figure began to slowly expand.
The power of the antimatter singularity spread toward the entire universe like a tide.
The entropy of the universe was skyrocketing at a geometric rate; space-time was collapsing, dimensions were dissolving, and existence was dissipating.
Everything was heading toward nothingness.
"My mission is very simple."
The voice of the Lord of the Void became incredibly solemn, incredibly sacred, yet incredibly terrifying. "To completely erase all these chaotic, disordered existences filled with emotion and entropy."
"To reset the universe to its initial state."
"Nothingness."
"No light, no darkness, no time, no space, no matter, no energy, no life, no emotion, no order, no rules."
"Nothing exists."
"This is the ultimate destination of the universe."
Kate gritted her teeth hard, golden blood seeping from the corners of her mouth—the backlash from the power of the sound of origin being suppressed.
Her body was trembling, her consciousness was trembling, her soul was trembling.
Fear submerged her like a tide.
Despair devoured her like a black hole.
She was the successor to the sound of origin, the last hope for protecting the universe, the one upon whom all civilizations and lives relied.
But at this moment, before the Complete Form of the Lord of the Void, she was as insignificant as a grain of dust.
The power of the sound of origin could not withstand the erosion of nothingness.
All the powerful beings, all civilizations, and all combat forces were powerless before the Lord of the Void.
It was too ancient.
Too powerful.
Too terrifying.
It was the nothingness from before the birth of the universe, the opposite of all existence, the ultimate entity that even the sound of origin could not completely seal away.
The remains of the shadow of the end had been devoured by it; it had evolved into its Complete Form, possessing the power to erase all existence.
In the entire universe, there was no longer any existence capable of stopping it.
Civilization was about to be destroyed.
Life was about to be annihilated.
Existence was about to return to zero.
The universe was about to become an eternal void.
Just as Kate was about to be completely submerged by despair, a faint light quietly lit up from the deepest part of her soul.
It was a forgotten memory, a piece of information sealed by the sound of origin, an ultimate secret regarding the Lord of the Void.
Kate's pupils suddenly brightened.
She "saw" it.
She saw the core of the Lord of the Void, that constantly collapsing antimatter singularity.
She saw the only way to destroy it.
She saw the final chance for life in the universe.
The ultimate collision between the light orb and dark matter.
The light orb was the ultimate form of the sound of origin, the primordial light of the universe, the source of all existence and life, a pure aggregate of positive energy.
dark matter was the other side of the universe, the framework of space-time, the opposite of antimatter, a pure aggregate of dark energy.
Only when the light orb and dark matter collided at the core of the antimatter singularity, triggering an explosion of energy that exceeded the limits of the universe, could that antimatter singularity be completely destroyed, the Lord of the Void be completely erased, and the universe be prevented from being reset to nothingness.
This was the only way.
This was the last hope.
The Endgame Weapon.
Kate looked up at that terrifying figure spanning millions of light-years, at that antimatter singularity that devoured everything.
In her eyes, the fear vanished.
The despair dissipated.
In its place was a firm belief, an unyielding will, and a determination to protect everything.
Emotion was not an excuse for entropy increase.
Order was not an illusory shackle.
Existence was not a mistake.
To live, to love, to protect, and to fight—this was the most beautiful meaning of the universe.
The Lord of the Void wanted to erase everything and reset it to nothingness.
Then, she would fight.
Fight to the very last soldier, burn away every last bit of power, and exhaust every last shred of her soul.
She had to find the light orb, gather the dark matter, and trigger that ultimate collision in the core of the antimatter singularity.
She would protect this universe full of emotion, life, and hope.
She would let the Lord of the Void know—
Existence shall never be void!
The light shall never be extinguished!
The battle shall never end!
The Lord of the Void seemed to feel the light in Kate's eyes; its "eyes" composed of the antimatter singularity turned slightly, landing on Kate once more.
"Oh?"
It let out a sound of emotionless surprise. "Insignificant creature, to think such a will could be born within despair?"
"Ridiculous."
"Your will, your emotions, and your beliefs remain meaningless before nothingness."
"What awaits you and the entire universe is but a single conclusion—"
"Nothingness."
The Lord of the Void slowly raised its arm, the power of antimatter condensing at its fingertips, aimed directly at Kate, directly at the last hope of this universe.
The ultimate slaughter was about to descend.
The ultimate battle was about to begin.
And that Endgame Weapon, the only thing capable of ending it all, was waiting to be awakened.
The fate of the universe hung by a thread.
