33: Chapter 33 Dating a Policewoman

Wang Shuting sighed wistfully and said, "Huaijing, you have done so many things to wrong me, and yet, now, I find that I cannot hate you at all."

"Me too. The business with Lin Qianwei, the business with my parents, and even the business of you murdering your husband... and so on, it all feels like it has vanished into thin air."

"Really? You don't hate me for the Lin Qianwei matter anymore?" She raised her eyebrows, questioning him, finding it hard to believe.

"I don't hate you anymore. It's all in the past. Besides, all these years, you have treated me truly well; you are a good woman and a good wife. It is I who failed you, and it is my fault."

Wang Shuting's eyes instantly welled up with tears, but she immediately restrained herself. She poured him a glass of red wine and said briskly, "Then let's have another glass to celebrate letting go and celebrate our breakup!"

The two raised their glasses and drank them in one gulp.

Upon returning to Jiayu Mansion, the couple locked eyes, embraced tightly, kissed passionately for a while, and then tumbled onto the bed.

Afterward, Wang Shuting left two bite marks fiercely on his shoulder.

The next morning, Zhang Huaijing finished handling some legal documents and accepted a significant amount of cigarettes, alcohol, high-end health supplements, and even some calligraphy, paintings, and antiques that Wang Shuting had left for him. Then, after hugging her, he strode away.

Wang Shuting knew that this might be their last meeting. She did not know when the next time would be, and the next time they met, it would not be as intimate as it was today.

Tears blurred her eyes once again.

She truly felt reluctant to let go, and her greatest regret was not having borne him any children, fearing that she had now lost all hope of that forever.

However, her period for this month was seven or eight days late, which gave her a glimmer of hope. Last month, she and Zhang Huaijing had been intimate many times without any protective measures; could it be that she was pregnant?

The problem was, after not getting pregnant for so many years, how could it happen in those few times? She gave a bitter smile and didn't take it seriously.

She suffered from poor circulation, so her period being late was not unusual.

At 11:00 AM, Zhang Huaijing arrived at a famous dim sum restaurant as promised. He pushed open the door to the private room, and Wen Di pointed to the seat next to her: "Secretary Zhang, welcome back to your hometown. Come, sit here!"

"Welcome back to my hometown? It was more like being exiled to the frontier." Zhang Huaijing sat down beside her with a chuckle.

She smiled coyly, looked him up and down, and commented, "Not bad, your physique hasn't gone to seed, and you look even more handsome than before."

"Wen Di, how did you become so glib?"

Wen Di chided playfully, "I'm complimenting you! Hey, what time are you going back to Haizhou?"

"There is a meeting in the province tomorrow morning. Secretary Niu from the Municipal Party Committee arranged for me to attend on his behalf, so I will return after lunch tomorrow." As a Deputy Secretary, he would have many more meetings to attend in the future.

"Really? That's great." She blinked her eyes, which were not large but dark and bright, and brushed her hair back unnaturally, her face unable to hide its coquettish charm.

She liked wearing a ponytail, as having long hair hanging loose was not very convenient for her work.

Various delicacies were brought out one after another, and the two chatted while they ate.

"My transfer application has been approved. From now on, I will be the star of the Criminal Investigation Detachment." Her pretty, clever face was full of anticipation.

"I really don't know whether to congratulate you or worry for you. Criminal police work is very dangerous, and Yuezhou is a big city with a high incidence of criminal cases, a large floating population, and many foreigners, especially black people."

"I originally studied to be a criminal police officer in police academy. I worked at the Yinhe Branch for two years, then got married and transferred to the city, which is when I switched to administrative work," she said. "Now I'm returning to my old profession. Really, I love being a criminal police officer."

"You're already 28, do they still want you? With your old arms and legs, how will you catch thieves?" Zhang Huaijing shook his head and sighed bitterly.

Wen Di was so angry that her face paled. She kicked him twice under the table and said, "What do you know? 28 is the prime of life! Besides, in the criminal police team, female officers are highly sought after."

"You are so good-looking, clever, and a divorced young woman with no children; of course you are highly sought after." He said this with a sour tone.

Seeing him like this, Wen Di raised her willow-leaf eyebrows slightly and said happily, "That's not it. We often need female officers to go undercover or play roles, so I am a type of talent in short supply."

"Doesn't that make it even more dangerous? My heart aches for you." Zhang Huaijing gently stroked her small hand, tender as water.

She pulled her hand away and slapped him hard with a smack: "Hypocrite!"

Zhang Huaijing sighed and said, "Suit yourself." He ate a few bites of food and suddenly asked, "By the way, how many years have you been divorced?"

"It's been almost three years, you scoundrel! You don't even remember that? Wasn't the divorce because of you?" She chided him and kicked him again, "You heartless man!"

Zhang Huaijing hurriedly clarified, "You divorced because Zhu Wencai cheated multiple times, drank heavily, gambled, and committed domestic violence; you couldn't go on for even a year..."

"And then you took advantage of the situation and tricked me into bed... Hmph, now you've even broken off relations with Wang Shuting because of it." Her face flushed slightly, containing both coyness and chiding, though she didn't mean to blame him at all.

If it hadn't been for Zhang Huaijing's help, her divorce wouldn't have gone so smoothly.

"So, does Zhu Wencai regret it now?"

"He regrets it to death. A while ago, he even begged me to remarry him, kneeling on the ground holding a bouquet of flowers and a bank card. I threw the flowers and the bank card away and then walked away."

Zhang Huaijing clapped his hands and said, "Good! Very good!"

"Now, you are single." Wen Di suddenly tilted her head, looking at him sweetly and adorably, "I am single, how about it? Shall we live together?"

"I'm afraid that one day you will die in the line of duty, and I will become a widower."

"Shut up! Who curses someone like that? You're annoying!" After acting spoiled, a trace of resentment flashed in Wen Di's eyes. She knew the man didn't want to marry her, but what did that matter? As Faye Wong sang: Happiness is a lover.

Zhang Huaijing took the opportunity to change the subject: "By the way, there is a matter I'd like your help with."

"Secretary Zhang, please give your instructions."

"There is a case in Wanghai County, Haizhou City that is a bit strange. Someone reported it to me, but I don't want to come forward. The local officials protect each other, and it's quite complicated, especially since the Chief of Public Security is unreliable, so I want to investigate it privately."

"What kind of case? Criminal?"

Zhang Huaijing nodded and said, "A section-level cadre from the Wanghai County Committee office named Cui Liming was hit and killed by a car in the county town on the night of August 25th. The county classified it as a traffic accident; the perpetrator was driving under the influence but fled, and has not been caught yet. The person involved is quite pitiful; he found me and begged for my help in the investigation. He is convinced that Cui Liming was deliberately hit and killed, that it was a murder case."

After the "honey trap" incident last night, Zhang Huaijing became increasingly suspicious that he had been targeted for murder. For example, why did the car not slow down? Why didn't it turn on its high beams? Why didn't it honk the horn? At that time, Cui Liming had been constantly reporting the Du family, while Du Zitong was pursuing Lu Waner, and Lu Waner was about to marry Cui Liming.

There was a motive for murder.

In addition, after arriving in Haizhou City, he checked the schedule of Mayor Niu Panlong and found that he did not go to Wanghai County for an inspection on the 27th. He had Secretary Jiang Tao ask around, and it turned out that Wanghai County had already been notified at 10:00 PM on the 25th that the Mayor's schedule for the 27th had been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

And Deputy Director Ouyang Yang, as the Deputy Director of the County Committee Office, must have received the notification in a timely manner. Why did he use the Mayor's inspection on the 27th as an excuse to make Cui Liming work overtime in the middle of the night?
