Chapter 264 Survivors
Chen Nuo took Jill into a digital store and rummaged through a pile of electronic equipment on the counter.
"What are you doing?"
Jill couldn't help but frown and ask.
"Just a moment."
Chen Nuo said as he started tinkering with them.
Wires and electronic parts were interwoven and spliced in his hands, finally recombining like magic, resulting in a strange yet wild, cyberpunk-style creation.
"This is a signal receiver."
Brad realized what Chen Nuo was doing and looked astonished.
It was as if he were asking, since when did you have this skill?
"A signal receiver?"
Jill repeated the question.
"Yes. Judging by the signal device implanted in the Nemesis, it can only receive wireless information within ten kilometers at most. The experimental team behind it must be close by."
Chen Nuo knew clearly that the Nemesis hunting Jill was just a side mission; its main task was to complete the collection of combat data.
Don't forget, we haven't even entered the 21st century yet.
Except for biochemical technology, which had developed uniquely due to local advantages, other technology trees were at a normal baseline, having just entered the information age.
Chen Nuo's appearance wasn't much different from an alien invasion.
Never mind hand-crafting a signal locator; give him an industrial junkyard, and he could hand-craft a Gundam.
It's just that there are no alien invasions in this world; otherwise, Chen Nuo could cosplay as Iron Man and then go back to find Tony to collect copyright fees.
Although the Umbrella Corporation has done every evil thing imaginable.
They are quite serious about selling biochemical weapons.
Before the actual products go on the market, they must undergo several rounds of field testing.
To ensure customers buy with peace of mind and use them with satisfaction.
As it happens, Raccoon City is beyond saving now, so it might as well be used as a testing ground; they can mess with it however they want.
"When did the police academy start teaching this?"
Jill felt completely outclassed.
It's one thing to have lower physical stats, but how did such a gap open up in these professional skills?
"I'm a genius; I taught myself."
Chen Nuo smiled, revealing two rows of neat, white teeth.
Could there be a more dismissive answer than that?
Jill suppressed the urge to retort, leaned over, and looked at the pixels on the screen, but she really couldn't understand them.
"You have to look at it in comparison."
Chen Nuo pointed to the map of Raccoon City on the wall and continued,
"This is us, and that over there is the Umbrella Corporation's team."
"Is the margin of error large?"
"Within ten kilometers, it shouldn't exceed fifty meters. Conditions are limited, so it's a bit rudimentary."
"..."
Jill looked at Chen Nuo, seriously suspecting he was showing off.
"Brother, with this kind of skill, why are you a cop!"
Brad lowered his voice and said with an excited face.
"Looking at the map, the only building around here suitable for the Umbrella Corporation team to observe from is this high-rise."
Chen Nuo said, tapping the map.
Jill had no objections; she chose to trust him, filled her pistol's magazine, and prepared to settle the score with the Umbrella Corporation.
"My poor Molly, Eris, Tracy... it's time to make these bastards pay!"
Chen Nuo said through gritted teeth.
It looked as if he had some deep-seated hatred for the Umbrella Corporation.
Seeing this, Jill's heart couldn't help but soften. Just as she was thinking about whether to say something comforting, she heard Brad beside her voice his shared hatred.
"That's right! We definitely can't let them get away with it."
"...Who exactly are these people you're talking about?"
Jill was a bit confused; were Chen Nuo and Brad's social networks overlapping a bit too much?
"They are all good girls from the Rose Club."
Brad replied bluntly.
Jill suddenly didn't know what to say.
She had heard of the Rose Club; it was a well-known strip club in Raccoon City.
She had long heard that there were quite a few single or divorced guys at the police station who often frequented this club, but she didn't expect it to be true.
"Let's go."
Chen Nuo said and walked out of the toy store.
Jill looked at his back, couldn't help but shake her head, and took the opportunity to elbow Brad.
"Hey... why are you only hitting me?"
Brad felt a bit aggrieved.
It was clearly Chen Nuo who started it!
Besides, what he said was right; they really were a bunch of good girls.
...
The Umbrella Corporation's tracking experimental team was indeed hiding on the rooftop of the high-rise Chen Nuo mentioned.
"Data information fluctuation is abnormal. Access all surveillance equipment in the surrounding streets and find the test subject, Nemesis T-type, immediately."
The person in charge of the team's command was an experimenter wearing glasses and a white lab coat.
However, given the current number of public surveillance devices in Raccoon City, there were still too many blind spots that couldn't be covered.
Furthermore, judging from the sudden disconnection just now and the strange fluctuations in information transmission...
Things were clearly heading in a direction that was difficult to control.
What exactly happened during the time the test subject was in contact with the target?
According to theoretical deduction, a member of a rapid response combat team shouldn't be a match for the Nemesis.
To be safe, should they retreat?
The person in charge hesitated.
Losing the test subject was one thing, but if even the combat data wasn't collected...
If the company superiors held him accountable, he feared he wouldn't have a good end.
Or should he send the combat personnel in to intervene directly?
Just as the person in charge was struggling with the decision, a hand silently patted his shoulder.
This sudden touch made the person in charge turn around instinctively.
Then his face slammed into the muzzle of a gun.
The cold touch made him shudder violently.
"I'll ask, you answer, okay?"
After Chen Nuo finished speaking, he held up his index finger to the several technicians in the tent, signaling them to be quiet.
The person in charge cautiously glanced out of the corner of his eye.
He saw the combat personnel lying dead on the rooftop one by one, his heart filled with horror.
When exactly did this guy sneak up here?
And silently wiped out all the combat personnel?
Judging by the uniform, he was clearly just a police officer!
With a "bang" of a gunshot.
The test supervisor's body trembled along with it.
A researcher's head bloomed with blood.
"Don't try any funny business, everyone focus on listening to me."
Chen Nuo reminded them.
A dozen minutes later, Jill kicked open the rooftop door, followed by an exhausted Brad.
They had climbed up this building of several dozen floors by sheer willpower.
Jill was fine; her "steel back" wasn't a joke; her physical fitness was far superior to that of an ordinary person.
Brad was truly about to collapse.
Jill first vigilantly observed the surroundings, and after confirming there was no threat, she came to Chen Nuo. Seeing him still having the leisure to smoke a cigarette, she couldn't help but curse.
"You bastard! Who told you to act alone?"
"Time is tight and the mission is heavy, beautiful Miss Jill."
Chen Nuo casually tossed the cigarette he had taken a puff of downstairs.
This cigarette was so bland, far inferior to the ladies' cigarettes in Night City.
"Stop arguing, you two. There's nothing wrong with this helicopter; we can finally leave this hellhole."
Brad had already climbed into the helicopter cockpit at some point.
This was the escape route the Umbrella Corporation researchers had left for themselves, never thinking it would benefit others instead.
"Don't be in such a rush; it's not time to leave yet. The Umbrella Corporation left quite a few things in Raccoon City, and I need to go get them."
Chen Nuo interrupted.
"What things?"
Jill stared at him and asked.
"For example, this T-virus vaccine."
Chen Nuo said, meeting Jill's somewhat excited gaze.
"There is a Dr. Bard at Spencer Memorial Hospital who led a team to develop the vaccine, and the Umbrella Corporation people are preparing to rush over to silence him."
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go."
Jill seemed even more anxious than Chen Nuo.
"Brad, you stay here, take the radio, and if we need to evacuate, I'll call you."
Chen Nuo tossed the tuned walkie-talkie to Brad.
"This is what I should be doing."
Brad gladly agreed.
The current time was midnight on September 29th.
A new day had just begun; less than a week after the T-virus spread, the entire city had already fallen.
To be more precise, Raccoon City had been abandoned.
The military didn't even enter the city to control the situation; instead, they directly sealed off the southern part of the Midwest region to prevent the virus from spreading out.
This wasn't necessarily wrong.
After all, the transmission method of the T-virus was still unclear.
It was impossible for the entire city to have fallen so quickly based on saliva transmission alone.
In fact, the initial virus spread/leak started from the sewers and spread to the entire city.
Multi-point outbreaks were simply impossible to control.
Jill followed behind Chen Nuo; along the way, she rarely saw groups of zombies.
Because zombies are very sensitive to sound, they had all followed the residents towards the outskirts of the city.
The city center, which was the original site of the virus outbreak, had become safer than the city outskirts after the outbreak period passed.
It was just that the survivors who could make it through the virus outbreak period were few and far between.
On this street, apart from Chen Nuo and Jill, there wasn't a single living soul.
The scene before them had completely become an apocalyptic sight.
Watching the familiar city turn into this, Jill felt like there was a stone pressing on her heart.
"Hey! There's an ice cream shop. Want some?"
Chen Nuo suddenly saw something, breaking the silent air.
"...Are you serious?"
Jill cast a sidelong glance at Chen Nuo; in this situation, you still have the appetite to eat?
A few minutes later, Jill was licking a cream-flavored cone; with her body taking in the sugar, her mood couldn't help but feel a bit better.
However, what was frustrating was that the road ahead was blocked by towering flames.
The air was filled with the smell of gasoline and a strong odor of burnt protein, with waves of scorching heat rushing towards them.
It was an overturned oil tanker that had leaked.
"How do we go now?"
Jill looked at Chen Nuo, wanting him to make a decision.
"Let's go through the subway tunnel."
Chen Nuo looked at the subway station not far away.
"I hope this will be a good idea."
Jill shrugged and agreed to the suggestion.
To her surprise, there were actually quite a few survivors hiding in the subway, using the train cars as a shelter.
And the ones organizing and protecting these people were a group of armed personnel who looked like mercenaries; their weapons and equipment looked very professional.
"Police?"
A slightly older man wearing a red beret with the Umbrella Corporation logo on it walked up, his gaze sweeping over Chen Nuo and stopping on Jill's face.
"I know you, Jill, an elite member of the Raccoon City Police Department's Special Tactics and Rescue Service."
"What does he mean by this? Did he just ignore me?"
Chen Nuo asked Jill.
Jill secretly curled the corner of her mouth but didn't reply.
"We are members of the U.B.C.S., hired by the Umbrella Corporation. As you can see, we are responsible for participating in this rescue operation. I am the captain, Mikhail."
Mikhail Viktor introduced.
"Umbrella Corporation people?!"
Jill's emotions suddenly flared up.
"Calm down. We are just the bottom-tier of the company, or even just freelance personnel. We have nothing to do with this disaster. Most of my team members died during the rescue process."
Mikhail knew what Jill was thinking and said calmly.
Looking at the survivors in the train, Jill hesitated for a moment but chose to believe this explanation.
Seeing Jill's attitude soften, Mikhail struck while the iron was hot.
"We plan to take the subway to leave this city, but we've encountered a bit of trouble. The city's power grid is paralyzed, and we need to restore power before we can start this journey."
"..."
Jill looked at Chen Nuo.
Rescuing the survivors was certainly important, but getting the vaccine was equally urgent.
If she really had to choose, it wouldn't be easy.
"It seems I misjudged; it appears this police officer is the one in charge among you. I forgot to ask earlier, may I ask who you are?"
Viktor said naturally, without any embarrassment on his face.
"Nuo, do you want us to help you?"
Chen Nuo said bluntly.
"Yes, we are short on manpower now, Officer."
Mikhail gave Chen Nuo a small nod.
"The power station isn't very far. If we hurry, we should be able to make it in time."
Chen Nuo's words were naturally not directed at Viktor.
Jill breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
Although Mikhail didn't know what other missions the two had, hearing this meant they had agreed, so he said with a smile.
"Very well, I will have Carlos assist you."
As Viktor spoke, a mercenary behind him stepped forward, looking quite mature.
"Good evening, officers."
Carlos displayed a youthful vitality that didn't match his appearance.
In fact, he was only 21 years old this year, so he was indeed young.
"Officer, take the walkie-talkie."
Carlos took out the team's internal walkie-talkie and handed it to Chen Nuo; his clear eyes held a hint of curiosity and inquiry.
Compared to the powerful and somewhat "plain" Jill, he was more curious about this police officer.
Intuition told Carlos that this guy was definitely not ordinary.
"Take back your gaze, or be careful, or I'll beat you up."
Chen Nuo said with disgust.
Damn it, having too much personal charm isn't a good thing; it's easy to attract dirty things.
"Ahem."
Carlos lowered his head in embarrassment, not yet knowing that he had already been classified as a "dirty thing."
