31: Chapter 31: Picking Up the Weak and Devouring the Enemy, The Old Wolf's Thoughts

Little did they know they were being too clever for their own good.

Human radar had already detected them.

Rockets trailed fire, streaking through the pitch-black night.

At least twenty of them charged toward them all at once.

They still underestimated human weapon technology.

Humanity's development over all these years wasn't for nothing.

Trying to challenge humanity's dominance now was like moths to a flame.

But the future might be different; they mastered Elemental Power at Rank 2, and they'll surely be stronger after Rank 3.

Bai Xuan estimated it would take at least Rank 5 to threaten humanity, and Rank 6 to have the strength to fight them.

But this was just speculation; the future is ever-changing, and who can say for sure what will happen later?

The bat army was blasted into pieces of flesh and blood, falling to the ground; a pungent, bloody stench filled the air.

"Damn! Chief, what should we do now?"

The largest bat remained calm in the face of danger:

"Spread out! Enter human territory from all directions!"

"Yes." At the command, the bats dispersed and headed toward the human settlements.

On the rooftops, Soldiers had already set up machine guns. Bullets rained down like they were free, strafing the bat army with relentless firepower—rat-tat-tat.

Meanwhile, more and more flying Mutated Creatures joined the battlefield, flying recklessly toward human territory. They had plotted this for a long time and would not allow failure.

Seeing this, Bai Xuan felt somewhat relieved. He flew toward the ground—waste not, want not—and devoured the Mutated Creatures shot down by bullets.

A steady stream of dead and wounded Mutated Creatures fell to the ground, and Bai Xuan scavenged and devoured them without hesitation.

Meanwhile, the ground-based Mutated Creatures also began to break through, racing toward the town with all their might.

Seeing Bai Xuan constantly devouring flesh, a wild boar over two meters tall at the shoulder charged at him in a fit of rage:

"Die!"

Bai Xuan slowly turned his head. A terrifying pressure of killing intent spread out, precisely weighing down on the charging boar. The boar slammed on the brakes, stopping its advance.

Fear filled its eyes. In its view, Bai Xuan was like a god of slaughter, staring at it coldly:

"Brother Eagle, I was wrong. Please continue eating. I have things to do, so I'll be going now."

"You'd better stay." Bai Xuan flapped his wings and pounced on the boar, his Eagle Claw piercing its head and killing it.

The boar's massive body crashed to the ground. Bai Xuan opened his bloody maw and swallowed the boar into his stomach. His Super Digestion system processed it in just a few seconds, leaving not even a bone behind.

Other ground Mutated Creatures—snakes, lizards, reptiles, as well as wild boars, black wolves, wild dogs and cats, wild sheep and deer, and so on—

—reached a consensus at this moment and charged toward the town with everything they had.

Bai Xuan flew to a tree and watched the scene:

"It seems tonight will be a sleepless night after all."

Bai Xuan didn't plan to act for now. If the human defense line collapsed and the Mutated Creatures entered the town, he would intervene. If not, he would stay on the ground scavenging and devouring flesh.

An hour later, the battle hadn't died down; instead, it grew even more intense.

A continuous stream of Mutated Creature armies joined the fight.

Humanity also deployed more Soldiers and weapons—helicopters, grenades, rockets, machine guns, rifles, mortars, and even missiles. They bombarded the back mountain relentlessly; flesh flew and flames reached the sky.

During this time, Bai Xuan continued to scavenge and devour flesh.

Some Mutated Creatures noticed Bai Xuan's actions and tried to kill him, but he killed them all effortlessly.

To Bai Xuan, Mutated Creatures of this level were like ants; killing them was as easy as turning over his hand.

...

Meanwhile.

On a rooftop, an officer held a walkie-talkie, commanding the battle.

After putting down the walkie-talkie, he looked at the back mountain ablaze with fire.

The Mutated Creatures were increasing in number, and some were so small they were hard to hit.

Many Soldiers had already fallen. This couldn't go on.

"How is the evacuation of the residents going?"

The officer asked the Soldier beside him.

"They've already been evacuated ten kilometers away."

"That's good."

"Report, sir! We're facing a tricky problem. Our supplies can't keep up with the consumption, and reinforcements won't arrive for another two hours. I'm afraid we'll run out of ammunition before then..."

"No matter what, hold the line. We can't let these beasts enter the town."

After saying that, the officer seemed to think of something:

"Right, aren't there some Mutant Pets in town? Bring them up to help out too."

"We've already brought them. They're stationed at the perimeter to kill any creatures that cross the line."

"Well done," the officer nodded slightly and praised.

He didn't know what had gotten into these Mutated Creatures. Couldn't they just stay in the forest? Why did they have to rush here to their deaths?

The horrific casualties didn't scare off the Mutated Creatures; instead, it enraged them, making them charge toward the town even more recklessly.

This was beyond their expectations.

Hopefully, the reinforcements and supplies arrive soon. Otherwise, at this rate of consumption, we'll run out of ammo before long, and then it'll be down to bayonets.

As long as they could use bullets and shells, they naturally didn't want to engage in hand-to-hand combat.

On Bai Xuan's side, a pack of wolves arrived as reinforcements in a grand fashion.

Leading them was Old Bei, with thin yellow fur and green eyes, watching the battlefield from above.

It had orchestrated this war, uniting every animal it could. "The enemy of my enemy is a friend." With a stirring speech, it had driven these Mutated Creatures to fight the town with their lives, determined to settle scores with humanity.

At the same time, it noticed Bai Xuan and sensed his extraordinary nature. It approached:

"Friend, why don't you join the fight and strive for a better future for us Mutated Creatures?"

Bai Xuan grew interested in this mastermind and flew in front of Old Bei:

"You know humanity's strength. Going forward is no different from seeking death."

"True, humans have terrifying combat power, but we have numbers. We won't necessarily lose. Those who charged at the start were just to exhaust their ammunition. Now the main force is beginning to move. In my view, the humans won't last much longer. Victory will belong to us in the end."

"I see. You're quite clever."

"Friend, we can't be controlled by humans forever. We must fight for a future for ourselves and our descendants. If we just sit and wait for death, running whenever we see a human,"

"then we'll be slaughtered for the rest of our lives. That's not what you or I want to see. Humans have a good saying: a single chopstick is easily broken, but a bundle of chopsticks is unbreakable. So, we must unite."

Old Bei shared its philosophy with Bai Xuan.

"Why not wait a bit longer?"

"Wait? Until when? Humans have been controlling our numbers and taking all the spiritual energy resources. We have no choice. If we don't resist, there's only death. If we do, there's a slim chance of survival. Why don't you understand this?"

Old Bei grew more agitated as it spoke, its hatred for humanity reaching a peak.

Bai Xuan naturally understood, he was just asking Old Bei out of curiosity.

This Old Bei... had a limitless future. Given time, it would surely become something great.
