79: Chapter 79: The Queen's Strong Support Turns Her Father into a Traitor
Linhai City, dusk.
The lock on the Su family's old-fashioned apartment clicked open.
Su Chen pushed the door and entered.
The black trench coat he wore still carried the chill of crossing half the globe, but the fatigue on his face vanished instantly when he saw Su Yun on the living room sofa.
"Big brother, where did you go to steal landmines?" Su Yun asked casually, pressing the remote control.
Su Chen walked to the sofa, confirmed his parents were cooking in the kitchen, and that Su Yao and Su Qing hadn't come out yet.
He pulled the glowing red potion from his pocket and stuffed it into Su Yun's hand.
"Drink it." His tone allowed no refusal.
Su Yun looked down.
The next second, his gaze narrowed slightly.
An S-rank recovery potion?!
Why did he bring another one?
This stuff wasn't easy to get.
"Brother, have you lost your mind?" Su Yun frowned and shoved the potion back into Su Chen's hand. "Where did you get this? Big brother, you must have gone through a lot of trouble for this, right?"
"Don't worry about that, it's for replenishing Qi." Su Chen stared at him and forcefully pushed the potion back again. "Drink it, don't leave any."
"I'm not drinking it." Su Yun sighed and tried to persuade him earnestly. "Brother, I'm really not hurt. My body is perfectly fine, and I eat well. Wasting such a precious item on me is just a waste! You're always out there doing bad... uh, realizing your ideals, you need to keep this for yourself; it might save your life at a critical moment!"
Su Chen's eyes suddenly grew hot.
This was the priceless S-rank holy rose essence!
Yet his younger brother didn't show a hint of greed and instead returned it without hesitation.
Even though he had suffered such heavy, deep wounds!
Even though the spiritual energy fluctuations in his body were so weak they were almost imperceptible (in reality, Su Yun had hidden his aura), the younger brother was stubbornly insisting he was fine just to save this life-saving medicine for his older brother, and was even worried about his safety in return!
What a strong child.
What a sensible brother.
Su Chen took a deep breath, his voice trembling slightly. He pressed down on Su Yun's hand and slapped the potion into his palm with unquestionable authority: "Cut the crap! Your brother has a hard life; I don't need this. Drink it if I tell you to!"
Seeing Su Chen's eyes turning red, looking like he might force it down his throat if he didn't drink it, Su Yun smacked his lips helplessly.
He twisted off the cap and downed it in one gulp.
No channeling energy to digest it. No being careful. It was just like drinking a bottle of discounted, near-expiry nutritional drink.
After smacking his lips, Su Yun commented: "A bit sweet. Strawberry flavor."
"If it tastes good, I'll get you more later." Su Chen quickly turned his head, suppressing the heartache in his heart. He swore that if that woman tried to manipulate him with things like this again, he would make her pay.
Su Yun burped.
The rich rules of life swirled around in the stomach of the Lord of Blind Idiot God, not even making a sound, and directly turned into 0.1% growth.
It was just an appetizer before the meal.
Five minutes later, the six family members were seated at the dining table on time.
Mom, Lin Wanqing, served the last plate of sweet and sour pork ribs. Dad, Su Jianguo, untied his apron and sat down to pick up his bowl.
The TV in the living room was broadcasting the evening news.
The screen flickered, and the anchor, who had been speaking standard Mandarin, suddenly cut to an emergency international news broadcast. The background was the British Empire's White Gold Palace.
"This afternoon, Queen Elizabeth Victoria Lancaster of the British Empire publicly released a global diplomatic communiqué."
The anchor's voice carried clear shock.
"Her Majesty the Queen strongly condemned the level-one wanted order issued by the Great Xia High Command yesterday."
"The British royal family demands that Great Xia immediately revoke the wanted order for the S-rank defector, Night Owl. The Queen publicly stated that Your Excellency Night Owl is an eternal, intimate friend of the royal family. Any hostile act against Night Owl will be regarded as a serious provocation against the British royal family."
At the dining table.
Silence.
Deathly silence.
The mouthful of seaweed egg drop soup Su Jianguo had just taken instantly turned into a high-pressure water jet.
"Pfft!"
This soup flew across half the table and sprayed precisely onto Su Chen's black sweater.
Su Chen closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He didn't wipe his clothes but stared fixedly at the TV screen, the veins on his forehead almost popping out.
Elizabeth! You crazy woman!
Su Chen gritted his teeth in anger.
Isn't it just that you want to marry me?
Using this method to force me to show myself, using this way to assert your sovereignty over me, even going so far as to launch diplomatic pressure at the state level.
"Too much!" Su Chen slammed the table.
The solid wood dining table cracked.
The whole family looked at Su Chen in unison.
Su Qing, who was holding a piece of rib, paused in mid-air.
She looked at the seaweed egg drop soup on Su Chen, then at Su Jianguo, who was frantically grabbing tissues, and nodded in agreement.
"Indeed, it's too much!" Su Qing turned to glare at Su Jianguo. "Dad, you were just watching TV, how could you spray it all over Big Brother!"
Su Jianguo grabbed a wad of tissues and wiped Su Chen's clothes in a panic.
He had walked through the gates of hell, only to be wanted by the whole city upon his return and scolded as scum by his two daughters.
He had pent-up anger in his belly. Now, suddenly hearing a foreign head of state publicly backing him, he couldn't control his strength for a moment.
"My mistake! Purely a mistake!" Su Jianguo apologized repeatedly. "I was just too excited!"
Su Yao put down her bowl and chopsticks. Her brows knitted together, and the look she gave Su Jianguo was clearly puzzled.
"Dad, what are you excited about?" Su Yao's voice was stern. "What does Night Owl have to do with you? You usually watch anti-Japanese war dramas, that's fine, but you're not a child, why are you getting into this celebrity fan culture stuff?"
Su Jianguo's hand stopped wiping the soup.
He stiffened his neck.
What fans? I am the person himself!
He threw the tissues on the table and retorted loudly: "What fans or no fans! I don't understand you young people's terms! I just know that everyone has wronged Night Owl!"
Su Jianguo pointed at the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Queen on the TV screen, his tone full of excitement, as if a hero saw the same thing.
"This person named 'Little White' or whatever is reasonable! She thinks the same as me, knowing you all have wronged Night Owl! What does this mean? It means justice resides in the hearts of the people!"
The restaurant went quiet instantly.
Su Yun's hand holding the remote control trembled uncontrollably.
Little White?
He turned to look at Su Jianguo in disbelief.
Who is this old man calling?
The current Queen of the British Empire.
A top S-rank powerhouse globally.
Queen Elizabeth Victoria Lancaster!
You call her Little White?!
Su Yun's brain began to run wildly. The amount of information was too large; he needed to sort it out.
Dad is Night Owl.
Today, the British Queen publicly announced that Night Owl is an eternal, intimate friend of the royal family.
What does this mean?
This means Dad knows the Queen.
And their relationship is very unusual.
Case solved.
Su Yun's gaze toward Su Jianguo changed.
Dad, you are truly vigorous in your old age, developing international business so deeply.
But by doing this, are you really worthy of Mom?
Lin Wanqing, sitting at the head of the table, put her soup spoon into her bowl.
The ceramic clinked.
She turned her head and looked at Su Jianguo. Her lips curled into a smile that wasn't quite a smile.
"Oh?" Lin Wanqing's voice was soft. "Then you and this woman really have quite the rapport."
How sharp is the intuition of a former Saintess.
This "Little White" was called so naturally, so smoothly; without over ten years of acquaintance, one could never call out such a casual title.
Su Jianguo didn't hear the hidden murderous intent in his wife's words at all.
He had been misunderstood for twenty-four full hours. His mind was filled only with the pleasure of clearing his name. He, Night Owl, was not a wanted criminal; he was an agent of justice!
"That's for sure!" Su Jianguo puffed out his chest, looking proud. "Anyone with eyes can see that Night Owl is a good person! This Little White has good taste!"
Lin Wanqing's eyebrows lifted slightly.
Little White has good taste? Rapport, is it?
She stared at Su Jianguo for three seconds, then retracted her gaze.
Su Qing rested her chin on her hand, poking at the rice in her bowl with chopsticks, and began to analyze seriously.
"As expected of an S-rank powerhouse. Even if they break the law in Great Xia, they have heads of state from other countries coming out to protect them. But why does it always feel a bit strange?"
Su Qing tilted her head: "Night Owl, a Monster Hunter native to Great Xia, how did he inexplicably become an eternal, intimate friend of the British royal family? This jump is too absurd."
"What's so hard to understand about this!"
Su Yao slammed the table.
The crack Su Chen had made extended another two inches.
Her eyes were cold, filled with hatred for the traitor.
"Night Owl must have already been working for the British Empire! He not only colluded with the Salvation Society but also betrayed our Great Xia's intelligence to defect overseas!"
Su Yao's tone was firm, allowing no rebuttal.
"He is a traitor!"
Once these two words were out.
At the dining table.
Su Jianguo: "???"
Su Chen: "???"
The expressions of the two men were highly synchronized at this moment, both falling into a state of massive bewilderment. But the stormy seas in their hearts were heading in two completely different directions.
Su Jianguo opened his mouth wide, looking at his righteous eldest daughter.
No.
I was just swimming in the joy of clearing my name.
How, in less than a second, did I go from a traitor to humanity to a traitor to Great Xia?!
I don't even know all the foreign words, how could I be working for Great Britain?
He wanted to explain.
But he couldn't say he was Night Owl.
He could only watch helplessly as his reputation at this dining table plummeted to the bottom of the earth.
On the other side.
Su Chen stared fixedly at the TV screen.
His breathing grew heavier and heavier. Invisible water vapor swirled under his feet.
Elizabeth.
So this was your scheme?!
Su Chen's thought process began to reorganize frantically.
He understood completely.
That woman knew that the person he cared about most in this life was his younger brother, "Night Owl." So, on the surface, she issued a diplomatic communiqué to protect Night Owl, but in reality, she was roasting Night Owl over a fire!
Think about it. Someone wanted by Great Xia suddenly receives high-profile protection from an enemy royal family. What would the Great Xia High Command think? What would all the people of Great Xia think?
They would inevitably, like Su Yao, conclude that Night Owl was a traitor to the country!
In this way, his younger brother would be completely ruined in Great Xia. There would be no chance of turning things around.
And then?
Then she could logically extend an olive branch to the cornered Night Owl. As long as his younger brother was forced to go to Great Britain and fell under her control.
As his older brother, in order to save his younger brother, could he not bow his head to her? Could he not accept her marriage proposal?!
What a vicious woman.
What deep scheming!
To get him, Bai Cang, she actually went as far as using the state apparatus to unscrupulously destroy his brother's reputation on the international stage!
Su Chen gripped the glass in front of him.
"Crack."
The glass shattered in his hand.
Shards of glass mixed with water fell all over the floor.
Su Jianguo was startled and turned to look at him.
Su Chen raised his head, his eyes cold and resolute. He swore to himself.
Woman, you think that by ruining my brother's reputation, you can force me to submit?
Absolutely impossible.
"Night Owl is not a traitor." Su Chen spoke coldly, his voice carrying unquestionable firmness.
Su Yao frowned: "Big Brother, the facts are right before our eyes. A foreign head of state publicly backing him—what else could it be for besides an exchange of interests?"
Su Chen sneered. What else could it be for? Because that crazy woman wants to use my younger brother as a hostage!
But he couldn't say it.
He could only sweep his cold gaze across the room.
"This is nothing more than the enemy's wedge strategy. Deliberately releasing false signals internationally to smear a Great Xia hero." Su Chen paused. "Night Owl is upright and honorable; he would never do anything to betray Great Xia."
When Su Jianguo heard this, his eyes instantly turned red.
What a good young man!
As expected of my good eldest son!
At this moment when the whole family was scolding him, only this good eldest son was still steadfastly defending him!
What is blood being thicker than water! This is it!
"Right!" Su Jianguo echoed loudly, slapping his thigh. "Whatever this 'White' says cannot be trusted! It's all a wedge strategy! Night Owl is a traditional, good Great Xia man who loves his family, loves his country, and is down-to-earth!"
The dining table fell into dead silence again.
Su Yao looked at Su Jianguo.
Su Qing looked at Su Jianguo.
Lin Wanqing looked at Su Jianguo.
These adjectives, aren't they a bit too specific?
Su Yun silently bit into a rib, calling it exciting in his heart.
This meal was even more stimulating than an evening drama.
Dad was eager to clear his name, which instead drew the death stare from Mom; Big Brother, in order to maintain the reputation of "Night Owl," didn't even care about basic logic.
The six family members couldn't even get on the same page, yet they could chat so passionately and confrontationally.
"Dad, wake up!" Su Qing rolled her eyes, slammed her chopsticks on the table, "The wanted order is written clearly. At the port, to cover for that perverted murderer Bai Cang, Night Owl didn't even want his own life! He's gotten involved with a heinous traitor like Bai Cang, what kind of traditional good Great Xia man is that?"
Hearing this, Su Chen's heart stung sharply, and he instantly became anxious.
As the leader of the Salvation Society, he certainly didn't think he was a good person, and he didn't care about carrying the infamy of the whole world. But he absolutely would not allow his existence to cause kind, innocent Little Yun (Night Owl) to suffer such a great grievance and bear the stigma of being a traitor!
"What do you know!" Su Chen stood up abruptly, his face pale as he retorted, "Perhaps Bai Cang is indeed an out-and-out jerk, but Night Owl is absolutely innocent! Perhaps he was deceived, or perhaps there is some noble, hidden pain between the two that outsiders cannot understand! You absolutely cannot wantonly tarnish Night Owl's character just because of one Bai Cang!"
"Exactly! You don't understand the greatness of Night Owl at all!" Su Jianguo also eagerly slapped his thigh to help.
"You're still justifying being mixed up with a wanted criminal?" Su Qing did not back down.
A fierce argument with extremely full emotions erupted in the restaurant. Several people argued until their faces were red and their ears were hot, none willing to give an inch. Just as the battle was deadlocked, Su Qing suddenly turned her head and stared straight at Su Yun, who was watching the show quietly on the side.
"Second Brother! You were also an eyewitness to the Strange Tales incident, you come and judge!" Su Qing questioned loudly, "Do you think people like Night Owl and Bai Cang can be anything good?!"
As soon as the words fell, Su Jianguo, Su Chen, and Su Yao stopped firing instantly.
The whole family's gaze turned in unison, locking tightly onto Su Yun. Everyone held their breath, waiting for him to deliver a "fair" verdict.
