120: Who said I have no evidence?
At this moment, Monterey’s face was contorted with a ferocious expression, his eyes brimming with murderous intent.
Compared to his previous righteous and incorruptible facade, he had now completely torn off his disguise, becoming utterly hideous.
“Damn it, where did you hear that name from?”
Monterey looked at Roen, his face grim, gritting his teeth.
At this point, he still held onto a last shred of hope.
He hoped that Roen didn't know much of the truth, or perhaps only knew a name and was unaware of the inside story.
However, Roen’s subsequent reply completely shattered his illusion.
“Hear about it? Haha, Mr. Monterey, are you still not giving up?”
Roen clapped his hands and laughed, his tone full of sarcasm.
“You wouldn’t think that by concealing the specific mission information back then…”
“…and thus causing Nutley to be caught off guard, falling into our Thieves' Guild’s encirclement and being killed, that it truly left no trace, would you?”
Upon hearing this, Monterey’s vision momentarily darkened.
“No! This is impossible! I don’t believe it!”
Monterey roared in a low voice, his composure shattered, his eyes filled with killing intent.
Back then, Nutley and he were both mid-level members of the Adventurers' Association branch.
Not only were they similar in age, but their names also bore some resemblance.
Therefore, at the time, busybodies referred to them as “The Tley Brothers.”
However, both of them were competing for the leadership position of the branch at that time.
So Monterey was extremely hostile towards Nutley, even filled with jealousy, and thus greatly disliked this nickname.
Nutley, however, readily accepted the nickname.
Because he was the only son of an old adventurer, he had longed for brotherhood since childhood.
And his father, that old adventurer, was not only powerful, an Earth Knight, but also a high-ranking leader at the Windwhisper Plains headquarters.
Nutley himself was also exceptionally talented.
At only twenty-five years old, he had already entered the Armed Knight realm.
Most importantly, Nutley was broad-minded, handled matters fairly, was generous, and was always ready to help others.
Because of this, he was deeply loved by everyone in the branch.
Even many powerful individuals who were also in the Armed Knight realm were willing to humble themselves and join Nutley’s adventurer group.
Compared to him, Monterey was like mud to a cloud.
At that time, Monterey not only had a huge gap in strength, being only a High-tier Just Knight.
Moreover, in terms of status, he was merely an intelligence supervisor and did not yet have his own adventurer group.
Therefore, by all accounts, no matter how hard Monterey tried, he couldn't possibly win the competition.
However, it was at this moment.
Monterey observed that among the quests Nutley’s adventurer group accepted.
There was one mission that was not as simple as it appeared on the surface, and was even quite dangerous.
The reason was that the target of this mission happened to conflict with the Thieves' Guild.
Once the two met, it was bound to cause disputes and competition.
Seeing this situation, Monterey immediately harbored malicious intent.
He used his position to conceal and modify the intelligence information.
As a result, Nutley’s adventurer group inadvertently fell into a trap set by the Thieves' Guild during the mission.
Nutley stayed behind to cover the escape of the other adventurer group members, ultimately sacrificing himself heroically.
Afterward, Monterey, having lost Nutley, his strongest opponent.
After some further effort, he successfully obtained the position he had always coveted.
Of course, Monterey, having committed such a heinous act, was naturally afraid of being discovered.
However, because he immediately re-edited the mission information after Nutley received the commission.
Therefore, during the internal investigation, no one was able to discover his meddling in the matter.
Time flew by, and so many years had passed in the blink of an eye.
As the saying goes, the music ends, and the people scatter; things remain, but people change.
The name Nutley gradually ceased to be mentioned.
Even Monterey himself had blurred memories and slowly forgotten the incident.
However, after many years, when Roen mentioned the name again.
Past memories resurfaced from the depths of his mind, instantly triggering Monterey’s shock and fear.
“No, even if you know about this, what can you do?”
Monterey forced himself to calm down; upon regaining his composure, he immediately sensed that something was amiss.
“I handled the aftermath of that matter very cleanly, leaving no loopholes.”
Monterey muttered to himself, the panic on his face gradually fading, replaced by a calm and steady demeanor.
“Even if you know about this, you have no evidence, so what can you do to me?”
Monterey’s lips curled into a sneer, and his gaze towards Roen became incredibly sinister.
“Kid, though I don’t know where you learned about this.”
“But you want to threaten me with something that has no evidence? You’re dreaming!”
Monterey’s eyes revealed a full murderous intent; at this point, he would no longer press the alarm bell.
Because Roen and the other person knew his secret, they were seeking death, and he could no longer let them live!
Just as Monterey was about to suddenly erupt and quickly kill both Roen, he didn’t expect Roen to suddenly give a contemptuous smile, looking at him as if he were an idiot and saying:
“Mr. Monterey, who told you I have no evidence?”
Monterey’s smile froze, and he was momentarily stunned.
Impossible!
He had erased all flaws afterward, how could this kid possibly have evidence?
Just as Monterey thought Roen was deliberately saying he had evidence to deceive him, he heard Roen speak leisurely, full of profound meaning:
“Mr. Monterey, let me remind you, although Nutley died back then…”
“…the thieves who participated in his encirclement are all still alive now!”
“What do you think, did Nutley hand over the evidence of your framing him to those thieves before he died?”
Boom!
As soon as these words came out, they exploded in Monterey’s ears like a clap of thunder.
That’s right, although he had completely cleared the Adventurers' Association’s information at the time.
However, Nutley still carried some mission clues on him.
He originally thought that as soon as Nutley died, everything would be fine.
And the hostile Thieves' Guild would not keep the mission clues on his person either.
However, what he never expected was that…
…Nutley actually left evidence of his framing before he died?
And he even handed it over to the hostile thieves?
But, since those thieves got the evidence…
…why had they never come to him all these years, threatening him with it?
Could it be because his position in the Adventurers' Association was too low before?
So, they wanted to play the long game and catch a big fish?
At this moment, Monterey’s mind was in a turmoil, his face pale, cold sweat streaming down his forehead.
“No, that’s not right! Even if Nutley left evidence, you are a bunch of thieves! Thieves!”
“Who would believe the words of thieves?”
“Haha, yes, that’s it, you lowly thieves, no one will believe your words!”
