14: Litton's helping hand
"What? The dog really ran away?"
Lisa was somewhat delighted and stood up.
She scurried to the alley entrance, tentatively poking her head out.
"It's really gone! Thank you, big brother!"
Lisa said joyfully, then asked again.
"Big brother, I'm Lisa, what's your name?"
"My name is Mr. Ron."
Mr. Ron said with a smile, and soon the two became familiar.
"By the way, it's so late, why haven't you gone home yet? Do you need me to walk you back?"
Mr. Ron asked. Lisa's eyes widened, and she nodded happily.
"Really? Thank you, big brother Mr. Ron."
Lisa was already scared, in case she encountered that big dog again on the way home.
Now that Mr. Ron was willing to take her, she was naturally overjoyed.
So, Mr. Ron took Lisa and walked towards Doctor Litton's house.
At this moment, outside Litton's house.
A middle-aged man was pacing back and forth anxiously.
"Why isn't she back yet? Nothing could have happened, could it?"
Doctor Litton was very annoyed, filled with self-reproach.
"If I had known, I wouldn't have treated Nem. It's all his fault for wasting my time!"
This afternoon, he was supposed to pick up his daughter from school on time.
However, he suddenly received a message from Barto, telling him to hurry over.
Litton initially wanted to decline, but the butler sent by Barto dragged him away.
Helpless, Litton still received a salary from the Barto Family, so he ultimately had to go with the other party.
But when he arrived at the Barto Family's house, he was surprised to find out.
It wasn't Barto who was in trouble, but his son Nem!
It turned out that this morning, on his way to Kura City, Nem was attacked and knocked unconscious, and his money bag was stolen.
By the afternoon, Nem finally woke up.
Because his horse had been killed in the fall, he could only limp home.
Upon hearing the news, Barto was naturally both angry and heartbroken, and his condition worsened on the spot.
So, seeing this, Litton could only rush to clean and bandage Nem's wounds.
By the time the treatment was over, he realized that school had already been dismissed.
He could only rush to the Knight Academy in a panic.
Then, upon learning that Lisa had left by herself, he had to rush back home.
"Lisa, my dear daughter, where did you go?"
Just as Litton was burning with anxiety, he suddenly heard a bell-like shout.
"Dad! I'm back!"
Litton was overjoyed and looked up.
He saw a commoner boy walking towards him with Lisa.
"Lisa!"
Litton picked Lisa up, holding her tightly and not letting go.
"I'm sorry, child, Daddy couldn't pick you up."
"How did you get back? Why are you back so late?"
Litton said, full of remorse, while Lisa, carefree, said with a smile.
"Dad, big brother Mr. Ron walked me home."
"You wouldn't believe it, I met a big dog on the way just now..."
As his daughter recounted the story, Litton looked at Mr. Ron beside them.
"Mr. Ron, thank you for saving my daughter."
Litton said earnestly and very gratefully.
Lisa was his only family member; if anything had happened to her, he would have regretted it for the rest of his life.
Therefore, regarding Lisa's savior, even if the other party was just a fifteen or sixteen-year-old farm boy, Litton still maintained sufficient respect.
"Doctor Litton, you're welcome, it was just a small favor."
Mr. Ron said, making a move to leave.
Seeing this, Litton quickly stopped him.
"Wait, Mr. Ron, I haven't properly thanked you yet."
Seeing that it was already late, Litton invited him.
"How about I treat you to a meal?"
Mr. Ron feigned refusal, but Litton enthusiastically pulled him into the house.
Lisa was also full of joy, happily skipping and jumping.
After a while, Litton brought out some food and wine.
Some of it he made himself, and some were delivery takeaways ordered from a restaurant.
So, Mr. Ron, unable to refuse, took his seat and ate.
"By the way, Mr. Ron, I remember you're the Jaeger family's child?"
During their conversation, Litton asked thoughtfully.
"Back then, your father also sought me for treatment, but unfortunately later..."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Ron, I shouldn't have mentioned that..."
Mr. Ron's expression was downcast, but he forced a smile and said.
"It's alright, Mr. Litton, it's not your fault."
Litton felt even more remorseful, and at the same time, he grew increasingly disgusted with the Barto Family who caused all of this.
If before, he thought he might passively change employers due to Barto's injuries.
But now, he genuinely wanted to actively end his work as a family doctor.
After all, although Barto didn't dare to be disrespectful to him, he was harsh and stingy, and his usual treatment was very ordinary.
Moreover, the Barto Family oppressed the common people and exploited the local villagers, which Litton had long found intolerable.
His dream was to develop a medicine that common people could afford, so that no one in the world would get sick again.
"Damn Barto, if only I hadn't told him about Gavin."
Litton felt some regret, but it was too late now.
However, fortunately, someone knocked out Nem today and stole his money, making Barto's anger and injuries even more severe.
Thinking of this, Litton couldn't help but curve his lips upward, and his mood brightened.
Next, Litton chatted with Mr. Ron for a while longer.
He was surprised to find that although Mr. Ron was young, he was very knowledgeable and knew many strange things.
Even in medicine, Mr. Ron could offer many unexpected insights.
"Mr. Ron, you possess extraordinary wisdom. If you can study hard, you may yet achieve great things in the future."
Litton said earnestly, looking at Mr. Ron not as a junior, but more like an equal.
"Perhaps..."
Mr. Ron was indifferent to this, laughing self-deprecatingly.
"But before achieving fame and success, I first need to support myself."
Hearing this, Litton's heart stirred.
"Mr. Ron, if you're willing, perhaps you could stay at my house for a while."
Litton thought that after he quit his job with the Barto Family, he might be able to open a private clinic.
At that time, if he needed someone to assist him, Mr. Ron should be very suitable.
"What?"
Mr. Ron was a little astonished, a look of interest appearing on his face.
But immediately after, he became hesitant again.
After several struggles in his expression, Mr. Ron finally shook his head and refused.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Litton, thank you for your kindness, but I won't trouble you."
"Listen, Mr. Ron, this isn't trouble. The reason I'm letting you stay here is actually because I want to..."
Litton laid out his plan, and Mr. Ron suddenly understood.
"In that case, thank you for extending a helping hand, I indeed need a job!"
