88: Meeting on a narrow path

Those two words were spoken casually, without a hint of anger.

Yet they felt like two invisible heavy hammers, smashing ruthlessly into the hearts of the Captain and Juan.

The Captain buried his head even lower, his body trembling slightly with fear. He would have preferred Osiris to explode in a rage at him rather than hear this bone-chillingly cold, emotionless evaluation.

Because this meant that, in his master's eyes, he had already lost his utility.

Osiris's gaze finally withdrew from those golden buildings and landed on the two kneeling men.

“I gave you the most advanced equipment, provided the most accurate intelligence, and even cleared all external obstacles for you,” he said slowly, his voice remaining calm. “Your mission was simply to follow a history student with zero combat experience and bring him before me. Such a simple task, yet you botched it.”

He shook his head, a trace of disappointment showing in those grey-blue eyes.

“I need an explanation.”

“Boss, that Lin Feng is too cunning!” Juan blurted out, trying to defend himself. “He used the mechanisms here and deceived us with lies, and then...”

“Enough.”

Osiris interrupted him, a hint of impatience finally appearing in his tone.

“I don't want to hear a loser's excuses. I only care about results.”

He raised his hand, and a guard behind him wearing a silver-grey combat uniform immediately stepped forward.

Osiris made a simple gesture.

The guard understood. He walked behind the still-rambling Juan, pulled a strangely shaped pistol from his waist, and without any hesitation, aimed it at the back of Juan's heart.

*Puff.*

A soft thud, almost inaudible.

A thin line of blue energy instantly pierced Juan's heart.

Juan's body stiffened abruptly. The expression on his face froze, and he looked down in disbelief at the small, smoking hole in his chest.

He opened his mouth as if to say something, but only spat out a mouthful of black charcoal.

Then, he slumped forward, falling onto the cold golden floor, never to make a sound again.

From beginning to end, Osiris's expression didn't change at all, as if he had merely stepped on an eyesore of an ant.

At the mouth of the alley, Wang Dalong was so terrified that he clamped his hand over his mouth to keep from screaming out loud.

This was too terrifying!

This man called Osiris was simply a devil! He was decisive in killing and viewed human life as nothing more than grass!

Kneeling on the ground, the Captain saw his companion's end and shook even more violently. Cold sweat on his forehead mixed with dust and trickled down.

“You have one more chance.” Osiris turned his gaze toward him. “Take your men and turn this city upside down for me. If you still haven't found them before my technical team completes their task...”

He didn't finish the sentence, but the threat within was self-evident.

“Yes! Boss! I guarantee the mission will be completed!” The Captain felt as if he had been granted a grand reprieve. He kowtowed forcefully, then scrambled up like a stray dog. Carrying his residual awe and fear, he began to gather his men, preparing for a carpet search.

Osiris ignored him, turning instead to walk toward the Golden Spire in the center of the city.

Behind him, a team of technicians followed closely, pushing various precision instruments with flickering indicator lights.

In the alley, Lin Feng pulled the still-shocked Wang Dalong and retreated quickly toward the deepest part of the alleyway.

“Let's go! We can't stay here!” Lin Feng lowered his voice, his tone urgent.

“Go? Where can we go?” Wang Dalong's voice was trembling. “The whole city is about to be surrounded by them!”

“Follow me!”

Lin Feng had no time to explain. Relying on the city map in his mind, he led Wang Dalong through the intricate alleys at high speed.

He knew very well that Osiris's search party would arrive soon. They had to find a hiding place that was absolutely safe and allowed them to observe the overall situation.

Soon, they arrived in front of a building that looked like a residential apartment.

The exterior of this building was unremarkable, but its location was very strategic, situated exactly to the side and rear of the Central Plaza, and it was quite tall.

The two of them slipped into the building soundlessly.

The building was empty, containing only some oddly shaped metal creations that looked like furniture, all covered in a thick layer of dust.

They climbed to the top floor of the building in one breath.

The top floor was an open platform with an excellent view. From here, they could overlook the entire Central Plaza and the Golden Spire that Osiris's team was currently 'invading'.

“Brother Feng... what do we do now?” Wang Dalong leaned against a corner, asking with lingering fear. “We just watch?”

“We don't have a choice.” Lin Feng's face was so grim it looked like it could drip water. “Osiris's goal is the ‘eye of omniscience’ inside that spire. If we rush out now, not only will we fail to save anyone, but we'll also get ourselves killed.”

He paused, a flash of determination in his eyes.

“Our only advantage right now is that we are in the dark while they are in the light. They don't know we're hiding here, and more importantly, they don't know that our understanding of this city far exceeds theirs.”

“We must think of a way to sabotage their plan before they succeed.”

Looking at Lin Feng's profile, which was written with fortitude, Wang Dalong's originally panicked heart gradually settled down.

He nodded, took out the small action camera, set it up in a hidden corner, and aimed it at the distant spire.

“No matter what, let's record the evidence of these bastards' crimes first!” he said through gritted teeth.

The two of them hunkered down in the shadows like two patient hunters, quietly waiting for their opportunity.

They watched as Osiris's technical team set up a massive energy-cracking device at the entrance of the spire.

They watched the Scorpion Captain's search squad rudely kick open doors room by room, conducting a massive search throughout the city.

Time passed, minute by minute.

A tense confrontation unfolded silently within the quiet Golden City.
