33: Chapter 33 The Necromancer Fleet sent an unencrypted message to the Empire: This is a no-fly zone.

Marcus Aurelian stood before the command console on the bridge of the Wrath of the Emperor, hands clasped behind his back, staring at the orbital sector occupied by the joint forces of The Swarm and the Necron fleet in the tactical projection. He had been standing for nearly a standard hour, his posture shifting from sitting to review battle reports, to leaning on the edge of the tactical table, to his current stance with hands behind his back—standing straighter and stiffer by the moment.

In the low orbit of Metallis, twelve leviathan motherships were arranged in a dual-layered defensive ring. The six ships in the outer layer had their bows pointed toward the outer reaches of the system, their main weapon charge status appearing on the scanners as a ring of continuously glowing orange dots. The six in the inner layer were interspersed with three Necron Scythe-class Harvester ships, shielding the Eternal Echo in the very center. The quantum communication array of the Eternal Echo was operating at full power, broadcasting a signal across the entire sector that no Imperial cryptographic system could decipher. On the surface of Metallis, the power output curve of the Forge Temple's blackstone engine had been climbing steadily for the past few days, its peak surpassing any Imperial facility the Wrath of the Emperor could monitor.

"This is not a defensive formation." Marcus finally spoke. The Tech-Officers waited silently for what he would say next.

"A defensive formation concentrates firepower in the direction of the incoming enemy. This formation distributes firepower evenly in all directions—it is defending the entire planet while simultaneously monitoring us. This is not a besieged hive; this is a fortress that has already been completed."

No sooner had he finished speaking than a communications officer rose from his seat. "Inquisitor! The Eternal Echo has sent an unencrypted transmission to our ship. Text message. The receiving system has confirmed it is free of viruses and psychic contamination."

Marcus turned around. The Necrons sending an unencrypted message to the Imperium was something that had never happened in his career. The last record of an Imperial officer receiving a communication from the Necrons dated back thousands of years to an exploration fleet that had gone missing in an unknown sector.

"Read it."

The communications officer cleared his throat and read the text on the screen in a voice he was struggling to keep steady:

"To the Commander of the Imperial Fleet: This system has been jointly controlled by The Swarm civilization and the Solemmnace Dynasty. Your fleet is currently on the periphery of the joint defensive airspace and has not yet entered the no-fly zone. If you choose to maintain your current orbit and cease the gathering of reinforcements, we will not initiate an attack. If you choose to enter low orbit or carry out an Exterminatus-level strike on the surface—we will make you remember the result faster than the last time. Sincerely, Acting Captain of the Eternal Echo, Canoptek-7, authorized by the Brood Queen to transmit."

The bridge fell silent for several seconds. It was not out of fear, but because every Imperial officer present realized the same thing at the same moment—the xenos were drawing a red line for them. It was not an intimidation tactic, not a declaration of war, and not the insane curses of Chaos, but a cold, diplomatic warning with specific terms and clear consequences. The Imperium had always been the one to draw red lines for others in The Galaxy.

Marcus broke the silence. "Connect me to Captain Ortron."

The Tech-Officer quickly established the communication link. The hammer of macragge was anchored on the flank of the Wrath of the Emperor. When Ortron's voice came through the helmet comms, the background noise was the distinct whine of grinders from the Ultramarines weapon maintenance bay. "I am here."

"You previously said the Brood Queen communicated with you in the tomb using Imperial tactical sign language. Now they have sent an ultimatum to the Wrath of the Emperor using Imperial Navy standard communication protocols, containing a 'no-fly zone' and 'diplomatic terms'." Marcus's voice betrayed no emotion. "Tell me, how do you deal with a xenos civilization that can evolve from a Zergling in a crypt to writing diplomatic notes in less than a standard year?"

Ortron was silent for a moment. "On Dead Silence-42, they used our tactics against us. In the orbital strangulation battle, they used Imperial Navy anti-aircraft tactics to suppress our fleet. Now they are using diplomatic notes to demarcate a no-fly zone." He paused for a beat. "They are learning from us, using the same methods we use against others to use against us."

"So?"

"So we only have one choice: we cannot let it complete its overall evolution." Ortron's voice was heavy. "We must strike before they learn the next stage of capabilities—if we do not decisively gather our maximum force and push in now, the next time it won't just be a matter of a no-fly zone. But I do not advise a rash assault before the main fleet has finished gathering. The current orbital defense line is too dense; the casualties from a forced assault would be even greater than on Dead Silence-42."

Marcus did not speak again. He turned and walked toward the Astropath chamber on the side of the bridge. Before entering the soundproofed booth surrounded by psychic wards, he gave the communications officer his final order: "Send the latest assessment to Terra—maintain the threat level at Exterminatus-level. Continue gathering reinforcements; all units that have arrived are to maintain their current orbit and do not enter low orbit. No one is to open fire first. Maintain the standoff and wait for the main force of the Ultramarines."

His words were forwarded to Terra word for word. The Astropath's psychic pulse pierced through the chaotic tides of the Warp across countless light-years, carving this standoff order from the front lines into the battle report archives of the Imperial High Command.

On the surface of Metallis, the Brood Queen received the intercepted records of the Imperial Fleet's communication channels from Canoptek-7. She forwarded the full text of Marcus's order to the Overmind and attached the analytical results.

The Overmind weighed this battle report against the new situation following Nephilak's departure. The Necron fleet remained, the Imperial main force was gathering, and Graia and the blackstone amplifier hub still needed to be seized—time had become a variable that both sides were fighting for. In the end, he only replied with four words: "Continue fortifying."
