50: Police came to the door

"Are you and your brother on good terms?"

Out of boredom, Xiao Xing continued to ask.

According to her, this was a gift from her brother, so he shouldn't be trying to harm her.

But nothing is absolute; in his past life, he had seen a lot of darkness.

It was common for many people to send their women and daughters to be toyed with by powerful individuals just to secure connections.

Some cities even signed unequal treaties with Demon Lords to prevent them from attacking, sending out a hundred thousand people every month for the demons to feast upon.

Xiao Xing didn't voice any opinion on whether her brother intended to harm her, but it wasn't impossible since the item came from him.

"Of course we're on good terms, otherwise why would he often bring me gifts?"

After chatting for a while, Mu Yaner seemed to feel that monsters weren't that scary, so her voice grew significantly louder.

"You think I'm a monster, don't you?"

Seeing her huddled in the corner, Xiao Xing couldn't help but ask with a smile.

He found it a bit amusing; this landlady's courage was truly small, quite comparable to Qing Lan's.

"Yes!"

Hearing the question, Mu Yaner answered without thinking.

However, as soon as she said it, she quickly covered her mouth.

"That... I didn't mean you!"

Realizing her slip of the tongue, she added a sentence and then looked somewhat resentful.

"Nowadays, no one believes the truth, but plenty of people believe lies."

"Similarly, when you think I'm a monster, I'm actually not."

"Now that I say I'm not a monster, do you believe me?"

Xiao Xing intended to clear up the misunderstanding, otherwise the police might think she was crazy when they arrived.

There are indeed ghosts and monsters in this world, but ordinary people don't know that. The police won't listen to talk of ghosts and monsters; they only act on facts.

"I don't... I believe you!"

How could Mu Yaner believe Xiao Xing? That feeling from earlier was still fresh in her memory; how could an ordinary person have such a terrifying aura?

It was just that the monster was right in front of her, so she didn't dare to object. She only hoped the police would arrive quickly so she wouldn't have to suffer like this anymore.

"If I were a monster, I would have eaten you long ago. Why would I wait until now?"

"Also, doesn't your body feel more comfortable now?"

"If I hadn't helped treat you and fix your computer, you'd probably be feeling even worse right now."

Xiao Xing gave her an annoyed glare. No good deed goes unpunished; he wouldn't come back next time even if it killed him.

"Ah, it seems like you're telling the truth. Are you really not a monster?"

Reminded, Mu Yaner seemed to have a realization, her tone sounding surprised.

She had been too busy being scared to think clearly. Xiao Xing had been renting from her for over half a year; if he were a monster, he would have eaten her long ago. Why wait?

"Do you have a game helmet?"

Seeing Mu Yaner slowly stand up, Xiao Xing asked her.

Since he was here, he probably wouldn't be able to get away easily once the police arrived. He couldn't level up with Qing Lan for now, so he needed to go online and leave a message.

"Do you play games too?"

After observing for a while and deciding that Xiao Xing probably wasn't a monster, Mu Yaner slowly walked over, her expression very cautious.

"If I didn't play games, why would I ask you for a game helmet?"

Seeing her standing there dazed, Xiao Xing was both annoyed and amused.

Mu Yaner had likely forgotten all about the corpse. Once she confirmed Xiao Xing wasn't a monster, she assumed he was just scaring her and didn't take it seriously.

"Go get a game helmet. The police should be arriving soon."

Seeing her about to dawdle, Xiao Xing quickly urged her.

Perhaps he was used to being efficient and decisive, as he found her procrastination quite frustrating.

"Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were a monster just now. I'll explain it to them later."

Hearing Xiao Xing's words, Mu Yaner touched her face, looking a bit embarrassed.

However, she soon snapped out of it; this wasn't her fault, Xiao Xing had forced her to call the police.

As for any corpse, where was there a corpse here? She believed he was just playing a prank on her.

Thinking of this, Mu Yaner was about to blame Xiao Xing, otherwise why would she have called the police?

"Forget it, you don't have a game helmet here. Using your game pod will be the same."

Xiao Xing said as he walked toward her bedroom; it would be faster if he did it himself, as waiting for this girl would take forever.

"Hey, what are you going into my room for?"

Mu Yaner shouted and chased after him, but thinking it wasn't right for a man and a woman to be alone in her bedroom, she stopped at the door, stomping her feet in anger.

After logging into the game to leave a message, Xiao Xing immediately logged out.

The experience in the game pod was indeed better; it felt extremely realistic in every aspect. He would have to buy one once he made some money.

Just as he walked out of the room, the doorbell rang.

Mu Yaner, who had intended to give Xiao Xing a piece of her mind, could only glare at him before going to open the door.

She was prepared to be scolded, blaming it all on Xiao Xing's prank, so she decided to give him a piece of her mind once this was over.

"Ma'am, are you the one who called the police saying a corpse was found here?"

Leading the group was a middle-aged man with a resolute face, followed by a team. He questioned Mu Yaner upon seeing her.

"I..." "Officer, we indeed called the police. Please come in and take a look."

Xiao Xing spoke first, not intending to let the girl dawdle any longer.

He thought the landlady was a decent person. Although he had killed the little ghost today, since someone was out to harm her, they wouldn't just give up. If the problem wasn't resolved completely, Mu Yaner would be killed sooner or later.

"Where is the corpse?"

Hearing Xiao Xing's words, they quickly entered the room and looked around.

Since they had someone to lead them, they didn't need to search everywhere, so they asked casually upon entering.

"That's it."

Xiao Xing pointed to the doll statue on the wall.

This thing had been specially processed with several layers; from the outside, it looked like a wooden statue. Ordinary people wouldn't be able to tell unless they cut it open.

"Officer, don't listen to him. This guy is just looking for trouble because he has nothing better to do tonight."

Mu Yaner bit her lower lip and glared at Xiao Xing before quickly explaining.

She was worried the situation would escalate, and by then, a simple scolding wouldn't be enough to resolve it.

She didn't know what was wrong with him; scaring her was one thing, but now he was fooling everyone.

Any normal person could tell what that statue was without even looking; how could it be a corpse?

"Are you filing a false police report?"

Seeing Mu Yaner's behavior, a female officer turned and spoke coldly.

Because they were told a corpse had been found, they hadn't even eaten after receiving the notice and rushed over.

If it was a false report, it wouldn't just be a scolding; she would take these two back and give them a harsh lesson.
