72: Chapter 72 Highway 17
Chen Mo stayed in the Farmhouse for three days.
During those three days, he did not step out of the courtyard once.
He went through the information on the traitors over and over again, marking every page and memorizing every paragraph.
He had completely digested the notes of the Transaction Master, Zhang Lie's diary, and the annotated information on the list.
On the evening of the third day, he closed the last notebook, leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes.
Lin Wei sat nearby, watching him.
"Digest it all?"
Chen Mo nodded.
"Any gains?"
Chen Mo opened his eyes.
"A lot."
He stood up and walked to the window.
Outside the window, the sky was darkening; Ghost Night was coming again.
Those wails came from afar, but the area around the Farmhouse was completely quiet—no Ghost Shadow approached, and no one came to disturb them.
"The will of the ghost realm must rest once every seven days," Chen Mo said. "During the rest period, it cannot interfere with reality."
Lin Wei was stunned for a moment.
"Is this information accurate?"
"It is from the Transaction Master's records," Chen Mo said. "He made thirty-seven transactions, and the information obtained each time was verified."
Lin Wei was silent for a few seconds.
"That means..."
"It means we have a seven-day window," Chen Mo said. "While it is resting, many things can be done."
He turned around and looked at Lin Wei.
"For example, entering the Source of the Sequence."
Lin Wei's expression changed slightly.
"Do you want to go now?"
Chen Mo shook his head.
"Not now. Wait for the right timing."
He walked to the workbench, picked up the Transaction Master's notebook, and flipped to the last page.
On that page was drawn a symbol.
The symbol of an eye.
It was exactly the same as the Pupil of the Sequence.
Next to it was a line of text:
"The thing the will of the ghost realm fears most is the person who can see it."
Chen Mo stared at that line of text.
The person who can see it.
The owner of the Pupil of the Sequence.
Himself.
"What do you think this means?" Lin Wei asked.
Chen Mo thought for a moment.
"Perhaps it is afraid of being seen," he said. "Perhaps if it is seen, it will be targeted."
Just like those Ghost Shadows; once their weaknesses are seen by the Pupil of the Sequence, they die.
The will of the ghost realm might be the same.
He put the notebook down.
The sound of an engine came from outside.
Chen Mo walked out of the Basement and stood in the courtyard.
An off-road vehicle was parked at the entrance of the Farmhouse.
Iron Bear got out of the vehicle.
He saw Chen Mo and grinned.
"Still alive?"
Chen Mo nodded.
Iron Bear walked over and handed him a bag.
"A gift for you."
Chen Mo opened it and took a look.
Inside was a metal badge, the size of a palm, with a wolf head engraved on it.
It was exactly the same as the one he got from Old Zhou.
But the words engraved on the back were different—
"scavenger".
Chen Mo looked at those two characters.
"Where did this come from?"
"It's spreading throughout the whole region," Iron Bear said. "The Terminator of Traitors, the scavenger of the Ghost Realm. Now everyone knows you."
He shoved the badge into Chen Mo's hand.
"Take it. It will make things easier for you later."
Chen Mo was silent for a few seconds.
Then he put the badge away.
"Thanks."
Iron Bear waved his hand.
"No need to thank me. I owed it to you."
He turned and walked toward the off-road vehicle.
When he reached the car door, he stopped and looked back at Chen Mo.
"Oh right, one more thing."
"What?"
"Eagle Eye asked me to tell you—he saw something," Iron Bear's expression became somewhat serious. "At the end of Highway 17, there is a huge object moving. It might be a projection of the will of the ghost realm."
Chen Mo's expression changed slightly.
"When?"
"Three days ago," Iron Bear said. "He said the direction of that thing is coming towards you."
Chen Mo was silent for a few seconds.
Then he nodded.
"Got it."
Iron Bear got into the car and started the engine.
The off-road vehicle drove off into the distance.
Chen Mo stood where he was, watching the car disappear into the night.
Lin Wei walked over.
"A projection of the will of the ghost realm?"
Chen Mo nodded.
"Coming for you?"
"Possibly."
He turned and walked back into the Basement.
The materials were still spread out on the workbench.
He sat in the chair and looked at the eye symbol.
The thing the will of the ghost realm fears most is the person who can see it.
But now, the person who can see it has also been targeted by it.
Chen Mo closed his eyes.
He was thinking.
Thinking about what to do next.
The seven-day rest window.
The projection is approaching.
The door to the Source of the Sequence is still waiting for him.
And that perfect sequence potion.
These clues intertwined, pointing to one answer—
It is time to act.
He opened his eyes.
"Get ready," he said to Lin Wei.
Lin Wei was stunned for a moment.
"Where to?"
Chen Mo stood up.
"Highway 17."
"To see that projection."
Lin Wei looked at him without speaking.
She knew that once he decided on something, no one could stop him.
She nodded and began to pack up.
Twenty minutes later, the pickup truck drove out of the Farmhouse.
In the rearview mirror, the small courtyard grew further and further away.
Chen Mo gripped the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
The night was thick.
But in those eyes, the golden light was brighter than ever.
A projection of the will of the ghost realm.
He wanted to go see it.
To see what that thing actually looked like.
To see if it was really afraid of being seen.
The pickup truck sped through the darkness.
Ahead, at the end of Highway 17, something was waiting for him.
