87: Chapter 87 The Shadow's Assassination (Part 2)
The wound was bandaged.
Chen Mo sat in the chair, looking at the blood-stained bandage.
Shadow's slash was deeper than he had thought; although it had missed his vitals, his left arm would be unable to exert force for a short time.
Lin Wei was nearby, packing up the medical kit.
"Will she come again?"
Chen Mo nodded.
"She will."
He stood up and walked to the window.
Outside, the night was deep.
In his Time Perception, everything within a fifty-meter radius was normal, but that point had disappeared.
Shadow had retreated into the distance, lurking in some unseen corner.
She was waiting.
Waiting for his wound to worsen, waiting for him to lower his guard, waiting for him to reveal a flaw.
Chen Mo turned and walked back to the workbench.
Those fragments were still spread out there.
He picked up that fragment of Shadow's short blade and held it up to the light.
【Fragment of Shadow's Short Blade · A Rank】
【Can be used to refine invisibility-type items, or used directly to gain a temporary invisibility buff】
【Direct use effect: Within 30 seconds, invisibility duration doubles, cooldown is halved】
【Material disappears after use】
Invisibility buff.
Within thirty seconds, invisibility would go from seven seconds to fourteen seconds, and the cooldown from twelve seconds to six seconds.
If he used it now, he could gain an absolute advantage during Shadow's next attack.
But if he used it, it would be gone.
Chen Mo put the fragment down.
Now was not the time to use it.
He needed to know why Shadow wanted to kill him.
Chen Mo picked up that assassination intelligence.
It was dropped when Shadow disappeared.
He unfolded the paper.
There was only one line of text on it:
"Target: Chen Mo. Bounty: S Rank Observer qualification. Client: will of the ghost realm."
Chen Mo looked at that line of text.
will of the ghost realm.
It was it again.
It wanted to kill him, but it didn't act itself; instead, it used the Observer qualification as a bounty.
S Rank Observer.
What was that?
He didn't know.
But it definitely wasn't anything good.
He put away the intelligence and stood up.
Lin Wei looked at him.
"Are you going out?"
Chen Mo nodded.
"Where to?"
"To find her."
Lin Wei was stunned for a moment.
"Are you crazy? She just hurt you."
Chen Mo didn't speak.
He just gripped his cleaver and walked out of the Basement.
Outside, the night was deep.
In his Time Perception, that point was still in the distance, one kilometer away.
It was moving, slowly, as if circling around.
Chen Mo activated Infiltrator.
Seven seconds of invisibility.
He disappeared into the night.
Seven seconds later, he had appeared one hundred meters away.
Invisibility cooldown: twelve seconds.
He stopped and waited.
Twelve seconds later, he activated invisibility again.
Just like that, time after time, he approached that point.
The distance of one kilometer took fifteen minutes.
When Chen Mo appeared twenty meters behind Shadow, she hadn't discovered him yet.
She was crouching behind a rock, treating her own wound.
The wound on her shoulder was not light; blood had flowed all over the ground, and her complexion was paler than before.
Chen Mo didn't move.
He just watched her.
In his twenty-second Prediction, she would next stand up, walk east, and then stop in the woods one hundred meters away.
He waited.
Shadow stood up.
Walked east.
Walked one hundred meters and stopped.
Chen Mo activated Infiltrator and followed.
This time, he appeared five meters behind her.
Shadow finally sensed something.
She turned abruptly.
Short blade in hand.
The moment she saw Chen Mo, her eyes widened.
"You..."
Chen Mo didn't speak.
He just raised his cleaver.
Shadow didn't run.
She knew she couldn't get away.
She just looked at him, and for the first time, something complex appeared in those pure black eyes.
"Why did you come?"
Chen Mo looked at her.
"To ask you something."
"What?"
"Who sent you?"
Shadow was silent for a few seconds.
"will of the ghost realm."
"Why?"
Shadow looked at him.
"You know why."
Chen Mo didn't speak.
He knew.
Because he refused to become an Observer.
Because he was the only A Rank who had promoted independently.
Because he was the person the will of the ghost realm wanted to eliminate the most.
"Are you planning to kill me?" Shadow asked.
Chen Mo thought about it.
"No."
Shadow was stunned for a moment.
"What?"
"You hurt me, but you didn't kill me," Chen Mo said. "I can also hurt you, but I won't kill you."
He took a step forward.
"You can go."
Shadow looked at him, her eyes full of confusion.
"Why?"
Chen Mo didn't answer.
He just turned and walked in the direction he had come from.
Behind him, Shadow's voice chased after him.
"I will come again."
Chen Mo didn't stop.
"I know."
He disappeared into the night.
Shadow stood in place, watching his back disappear.
For a very, very long time.
Then she looked down at her wound.
The blood was flowing even more.
She pressed it with her other hand.
Then she turned and walked in the opposite direction.
In the night wind, a sentence drifted over.
Very light, almost inaudible.
"Thank you."
When Chen Mo returned to the Farmhouse, dawn was approaching.
Lin Wei was waiting for him.
Seeing him return, she breathed a sigh of relief.
"Where is she?"
"She left."
Lin Wei was stunned for a moment.
"You didn't kill her?"
Chen Mo shook his head.
He sat in the chair and closed his eyes.
Serialization progress: 1.1%.
It increased by another 0.1%.
But it was worth it.
Because in Shadow's eyes, he had seen something else.
Not killing intent, not fear.
But confusion.
She didn't know why she had to kill him.
She was just following orders.
Just like those Transformed Ones, those traitors.
They were all pawns.
Chen Mo opened his eyes.
Outside the window, it was dawn.
Ghost Night had ended.
He stood up and walked to the window.
In the distance, the sun was rising.
Golden sunlight shone on his face.
He narrowed his eyes.
Shadow would come again.
The will of the ghost realm would also come again.
But it didn't matter.
He would wait.
Waiting for them to come.
Then, let them know—
Who was actually the prey.
