Chapter 76: Chapter 76 Begging Damon stood unmoving like a sculpture, his face was cold and stern. He shut his eyes, his hands clenched tightly beside him. Then he squatted beside the dead maid’s body. He reached for the locket; however, his hand halted midway.

For the first time, his stern face fell. He looked like someone who had been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. His shoulders slumped, he swallowed, and reached for the locket.

His fingers lightly brushed against it, his fingers stained by blood. The blood of the maid had sprayed over the locket.

He tucked his clean hand into his pocket, pulling a napkin out. He covered the locket with the napkin.

He rose to his feet, his eyes lingered on the maid’s body, his jaws tightened. He turned around, heading out of the cell.


His eyes met with mine momentarily. I looked away. "Are you okay?" I whispered.

His brows furrowed deeply at me. "Do I look like I’m not okay?"

"No... I mean yes. You don’t look like you are okay."

He paused, "And if I’m not, what are you going to do about it? Huh?" His eyes narrowed.

"I will talk to you so you can feel better," I blurted out.



"You think your talk would be of any help to me?" He clicked his tongue, heading out of the dungeon.

’Wait, where is he going?’

"Master, where are you heading to?" I ran after him.

"To my castle of course, or do you intend to sleep here?" he deadpanned.

"But master, Caroline and Lydia, they are still locked up." My chest rose heavily against my ribs.

Abruptly, he turned around. "Don’t push your luck, Ember! We are not having that conversation."

"Why not?"

"Do I need to explain to you the way I rule over my people too?!" The wall shook from his thunderous voice.

I unconsciously flinched, fear flickered through my eyes. His lips curved into a scowl. "Scared?" He walked close to me.

I shook my head, but I did not meet his eyes. I just couldn’t—something about him right now didn’t sit well with me. The hair on my body stood up at their ends.

"Master... please." I closed my eyes, feeling already distressed.

"Don’t. Beg. Me," he drawled.

My feet stumbled backward. My heart stuttered in my chest as his oppressive aura began to spread in the pathway. It was like I couldn’t breathe, like there was a heavy ton of weight sitting on my chest.

"I don’t want to beg you too," I cried out. "But I have no choice, because they are the only people I can rely on. Please spare them for my sake." Tears trickled down my cheeks.

His eyes fixated on my wet cheeks as if he was entranced by it. He raised his hand, reaching for my cheeks. His thumb brushed against my face, wiping away my tears. His brows furrowed.



"Can you feel what I’m feeling?" he asked mindlessly.

My brows furrowed. ’What is he talking about? Is he referring to what happened with Alpha Allison and the omega maid?’

I nodded my head.

"It feels like we have met before, Ember. Like we have always known each other," he muttered. His gaze on my face softened, but I could read the confusion in it.

’Now what is the psychopath talking about?’ I rolled my eyes inwardly.

"Master... I don’t understand what you are talking about." I averted my gaze from his face.

His furrowed brows deepened. And the next second, it was like whatever had entranced him snapped. His softened gaze hardened, his gaze was sharp as a cold blade.

He pulled away from me before tucking his hand in his pocket. His gaze swept over me before he cleared his throat, walking away.

My heart pounded in my ears. What was that all about?

’Caroline and Lydia, I need to find a way to save them.’

With that thought, I ran after him. "Master, wait... wait, please."

He stopped, sighing like an old man who was dealing with a naughty child. "What?" he asked, with irritation in his voice.

I dropped on my knees. I swallowed. I never thought I would ever beg someone on my knees.

’You ate on the ground, so this is nothing compared to that humiliation.’

"Spare them, please."

"There are rules, Ember, and I can’t bend them because you can cry. They knew having any association with the witches would cost their neck. I can’t spare them—they must die."



His words tugged at my heart like it was being chopped by a knife. The words ’they must die’ resonated in my head, and I couldn’t bring myself to believe that I would never see them again.

"Can I see them?" I stood up, dusting the dirt away from my clothes.

He stared at me for a moment too long. "Five minutes," he growled.

He didn’t waste any more time; he walked away, leaving me in the dungeon. My gaze trailed along his retreating frame.

’I need to find a way to rescue them.’

A guard stood at the corner of the wall. He walked toward me immediately after Damon left.

"I’ll show you the way," he said.

I was taken aback by his sudden appearance and words. ’How did he know about where I am heading to?... this must be the mindlink thing.’

I nodded, following in his footsteps. We took a few turns before we reached a darker area of the dungeon. There was no sunlight except the torches burning on the wall.

"Why is this place different from the normal side of the dungeon?" I couldn’t help but ask. The air was damp, and there was moss growing on the walls.

"This is the part of the dungeon where dangerous criminals are locked up." The guard’s words were like a cold bucket poured on me.

’Dangerous criminals?’ My heart thudded against its ribs. I hastened my footsteps, running down the path. ’Doesn’t this mean that they are locked up with a bunch of dangerous criminals?!’
