Chapter 74: Unclear Findings
Chapter 74: Unclear Findings "What do you think, Lucian?" The viscount demanded, his deep fixed on the report on the table. He had been silent while Lucian presented his findings."I don’t know what to think, my lord!"
Lucian bowed, keeping his suspicions to himself.
"Hmm." The viscount stroked his chin thoughtfully.
"Take over the investigation and report back only with tangible results. Spare me the details of your plans." The constant tapping sounds of his finger on the table stopped suddenly.
"Yes, my lord," Lucian replied, bowing respectfully.
Walking out of the room, he pulled out a rather old phone from the pocket of his overcoat and typed somethings into it before burning it to ciders and throwing the ashes into a bin when he got out.
Lucian kept his face neutral, though unease stirred within him. There was more to this case than he had revealed, but he couldn’t voice out his suspicions – not yet, he wasn’t sure enough.
’Galactical? The hell is going on??’ Lucian thought, making his way to the security corps building in the city, his mind racing with unanswered questions.
Meanwhile, in the camp, another confrontation was unfolding.
"You met with him?"
"Who?"
"Don’t play dumb, everyone in the camp knows about it. What was that about?"
"Taking a sealed oath. Have you forgotten why we are here?"
"Enough! Don’t you dare mention that. It’s my business and I decide how I go about it!" Ruby snapped at Jake, her tone sharp with irritation.
Their loud voices could easily be heard outside the unit building.
"Sigh....We agreed to avoid him for a reason. A good one at that. Both for us and him!" Jake’s vice softened, though his frustration lingered.
"I know, but its not that simple. Richard’s involvement changes everything. Which idiot thought of placing them in the same team after reading their files?" Ruby groaned, pacing round the room in frustration.
Seeing her distressed state, Jake walked up to her, bypassing her personal space and placed his hands on her shoulder, his voice quieter now.
"Ruby, we’ll figure this out. He’s our friend after all, but we can’t lose focus."
Ruby gaze hardened at the mention of their goals, her teeth biting down more on her lips before Jake’s rough thumb came on it stopping her from injuring herself.
Looking into his soft eyes, she sighed and placed her head on his chest.
"Okay, I’ll try"
"Good!"
Jake said, slowly patting her head while staring into space, a strange look in his eyes.
"He’s a little bro too!" He muttered to Ruby who had her eyes closed within his embrace.
"We’ll deal with it"
........
Inside one of the dorm rooms which was on the bigger end, marking the owner as someone with a corresponding ranking, was a figure laying on the floor in the middle of the room, her figure obscured by the darkness within the room.
One of her features was still visible though, giving off a light glow within the dark, making one wonder if they were hallucinating.
CLICK!
"Why are you laying in the dark?" Liam asked, his tone filled with worry and slight confusion as he closed the door behind him with a click.
Receiving no response, he turned on the lights so he could see more clearly. Must have been coming there often to easily find his way around.
"What are you doing?" Liam asked Sabrina who laid on the ground, staring at the ceiling uncaring of the sting she felt in her eyes with the sudden change of lighting.
"....."
Still not getting a reply from her, he took a seat on one of the chairs in the scarcely loaded room.
Now the lights were on, the full room could be seen and the little amount of stuff there could also be noticed.
The room felt so empty with such little load. All she had was a bed at the side of the wall and a table and two chairs at the other end of the room.
Taking a seat, brought out a little fidget to toy with, but his gaze didn’t last long on the toy before switching to the still silent figure on the ground.
"What are you doing?"
Liam asked again, his voice losing its soft edge, gaining more pressure, his intent to receive an answer obvious.
"You knew right?"
Sabrina said in what was barely a whisper, but Liam had easily heard her words across the empty room.
"Why am I even asking? You were sent by him too!"
She added and Liam’s face previously filled with confusion shifted into that of realization, before taking on one of slight worry.
"What do you mean?" He questioned, playing dumb.
"Isn’t that useless. Don’t you know? He sent me a message himself!"
The piercing gaze of her blue eyes which were of a similar shade to his made him shiver, it had been a while since he had seen her that upset.
Ever since she had arrived at the camp, she had begun to act better, not as bottled up and cold as before, she was more expressive and he was happy to see her in such a state.
But now, it felt like all that was a dream, she was back to looking like the same young lady he had always looked up to in the halls of the main family. The precious and untouchable treasure of the family.
Now that he had seen a different side to her, he was starting to hate the current look on her, the same look the other nobles wore, full of contempt. What he was starting to hate more was the person behind that look of hers.
"You don’t even realize it, do you? Letting yourself be used like a pawn—where’s your honor, Liam? Where’s your pride as a knight?"
Her scornful words and tone made him avert his gaze. He clenched his fists tightly until they turned white. Her words stung more than he cared to admit, but he refused to lash out.
She had just mentioned a sensitive topic for him. This was something he wanted to avoid for a while.
Seeing Liam’s clenched jaw, Sabrina let out a tired sigh and sat up, turning around to look at him.
"I’m sorry, Liam. I-I didn’t mean to... sigh!"
She struggled to find the right words, her tears forming dotted patches on the padded floor of the room.
"It’s okay, it really is!" Liam tried to comfort the lady who was having a minor breakdown in front of him.
He stretched his hand wanting to reach out to her, but then he paused, a conflicted and hurt look in his eyes before withdrawing and watching her cry in silence.
Luckily, he didn’t have to endure her wails for more than a few minutes.
Her sniffs could be heard along with the sight of her cleaning of the tears on her face. Now that she was facing him under the light, he could see the dark circles and bags under her eyes.
She must have cried multiple times over the night.
"What did he say!" Liam finally found the strength within him to ask.
Instead of telling him, she pointed to the desk which was in front of him and when he looked towards the side, noticing a letter that had been folded and placed back into its open envelope.
Taking out and unfolding the piece of paper, the first thing that caught his eyes was the rumpled state of the paper along with some parts of the writing which had become smudged.
’She must have cried on this too’
Liam thought, before focusing on the content of the letter. It read in a handwriting that gave off the writer’s confidence and stability.
"I see you’ve been doing well. It’s good to see that you have been defending the family’s name well. I have my eyes on you, don’t forget about your purpose"
It was a very short and precise letter, going directly to the point. But this was the issue, this letter was cold and plain, like they were conversing with a subordinate who had been sent on a mission.
"He sent this?"
Liam asked and the silence he got as an answer made him realize how stupid his question sounded.
But he couldn’t be blamed. This was from her father, yet it felt like a commendation coming from a senior officer.
"Can’t you just ignore it?"
"No! This message proves that he knows what I’ve been doing. I can’t keep up with this"
Sabrina buried her face within her knees, dragging her hair.
Liam’s suggestion was something she couldn’t follow. She came to this camp to get away from the suffocating atmosphere of her family and they agreed that they would he would stay out of her business while she was here.
She knew he didn’t fully plan on complying when he sent Liam and Ethan to escort her and passed that off as he not wanting her to feel lonely.
She just didn’t expect that he would make such a bold move, clearing showing that no longer had any intention on keeping his promise.
’What do I do?’
Sabrina’s brain raced as she wondered what could have caused this development. Her father wasn’t one to be trusted, but he was a man of his words, even though he often tested the limits of those words. He had never once broken it like this.
’What could have happened?!’
