144: The fall of the Titanium Empire
"The feasibility study for Project 'Pastoral' has entered its third phase. The positioning accuracy for the core consciousness nodes of the 'Aidilus Biomass Body' has reached 87%. Initial testing of the first batch of 'Pheromone Induction' and 'Neural Pulse Interference' prototype weapons has shown preliminary results." The report sent back by Governor Lei Huan from the Extragalactic galaxy seemed unnervingly calm amidst the blizzard of war reports flooding in from the Milky Way. "The conversion project for the candidate feedlot system—Silent Cage (a frozen rocky planet located in a resource-poor small star system)—has commenced."
However, the situation within the Milky Way was sliding toward an even more violent abyss at an unprecedented speed.
"Emergency summary from the 'Diting' Network: The Tau Empire's core world, 'Damocles Gulf', and its major Sept worlds are confirmed to be suffering from large-scale reality structure collapses and Warp storm incursions of unknown cause! The scope of destruction continues to expand, and the remaining Tau Empire fleets and ground forces have fallen into total Chaos and rout! Their controlled territories are turning into uninhabitable 'reality wastelands' at a staggering rate!" The intelligence officer's voice trembled with disbelief.
On the star map, the orange-red regions that originally represented the vibrant and expansive Tau Empire were now being covered and swallowed by vast swathes of gray-black and crimson, symbolizing 'reality annihilation' and 'Warp contamination'. There were no reports of large-scale fleet engagements; instead, worlds were simply going 'silent' or 'losing contact' one after another, as if swallowed by an invisible, giant maw.
"The cause?" Han Zhe's brow furrowed. Although the Tau Empire was not a primary enemy of the Human Federation, its sudden and abnormal collapse itself signified immense instability.
[Synthesizing fragmented information from multiple sources and simulations by the 'custodian',] providence responded, [the destruction of the Tau Empire is highly correlated with the following factors: 1. The galaxy-level reality structure weakening caused by the Scars of Cadia reached a critical threshold within Tau Empire territory; 2. The 'Greater Good' collective consciousness network, which the Tau Empire relied upon too heavily, likely suffered a catastrophic 'resonance' or 'short circuit' with the Warp during the reality collapse; 3. External forces (Chaos, unknown entities, or even... the 'Men of Iron'?) cannot be ruled out as having used the opportunity to catalyze or launch an attack. The exact cause is no longer verifiable, but their territory has essentially lost all strategic value, turning into a 'Death Zone' filled with lethal radiation, reality distortions, and Warp rifts.]
A once-thriving alien empire with unique technology had exited the galactic stage in such a bizarre and swift manner, leaving behind a vast "vacuum" where no human (or rather, no normal life) could survive.
"Will the Empire, Eldar, Necrons, or even Chaos fight over these 'wastelands'?" Alpha-01 asked.
"Not in the short term," Han Zhe shook his head. "That region is currently a toxic quagmire; anyone who enters will be sucked in. But... for us, it might be an opportunity."
"An opportunity?"
"The energy from the 'Purification Dome' and the 'abyss of order' might be able to slowly purify the edges of some 'reality wastelands'," the Chief Technologist's eyes lit up. "Although the cost would be immense, if successful, we would gain a clean and unclaimed strategic buffer zone. We could even establish new 'keystones' in the purified areas, further squeezing the space of the Empire or Chaos."
"It can be taken into long-term strategic consideration," Han Zhe nodded, "but the primary threat at present remains the Tyranids."
On the star map, the dark green shadow representing the Tyranid 'Leviathan' main swarm had already flooded over the Empire's crumbling defense lines from multiple directions like a breached dam. The tendrils of its vanguard 'Devourer Sub-groups' were beginning to spread frantically in all directions of the galaxy like greedy vines, including toward the flanks of the Human Federation's controlled zones!
"Report from Northern Defense Line 'Purification-7' sector! Encountered a large-scale Tyranid biological fleet raid! Confirmed as the first 'Main Swarm Tendril' to penetrate deep into our controlled territory! Scale: over two hundred biological cruisers and thousands of escort ships! Their target appears to be the rare metal vein clusters located in that sector!" The frontline alarm shrieked.
"They're finally here." A cold light burst from Alpha-01's eyes. "Order: titan-class First and Third Clusters of the Northern Defense Line, move out immediately to intercept! Activate maximum authorization for 'Exterminatus Order' weapons! Focus 'Purification Dome' energy for regional biomass purification! The swarm must not be allowed to take root in my territory!"
"Exterminatus Order weapons, release at full power!"
At the northern border of the Human Federation, a scene of total annihilation against organic life unfolded. Missiles loaded with gene-disintegration viruses and neurotoxic pheromone clouds burst like deadly dandelions in the densest areas of the Tyranid swarm. The invisible mist melded into the swarm's bio-electric networks and pheromone oceans.
The effect was immediate. Infected Tyranid bio-ships began to lose coordination, colliding with and attacking each other as their biomass decayed and dissolved from within. Even the roar of the hive mind seemed to become confused and enraged. Following closely behind was the merciless 'Conceptual Disintegration' fire from the titan-class fleets, evaporating and purifying the weakened swarm piece by piece.
"Purification Dome, activate regional 'Biomass Annihilation Field'!" Massive amounts of order energy were channeled to create a devastating environment of high temperature, high radiation, and potent decomposition enzymes in specific sectors of space, further reducing the shattered Tyranid remains into harmless elementary particles.
The battle was brutal and efficient. The Tyranid swarm's terrifying numerical advantage and adaptability suffered a severe setback for the first time in the face of the Human Federation's highly targeted "purification" tactics, which spared no energy or specialized munitions. After several days of fierce fighting, the tendril that had penetrated deep into the Human Federation's territory was completely severed and destroyed, leaving behind a vast "Purification Zone" floating with green biomass residue and radioactive dust.
"The swarm's offensive has been contained, but the 'Leviathan' main swarm continues to apply pressure," Alpha-01 reported the results of the battle, his tone not at all relaxed. "This is only the beginning. The swarm will learn and adjust. We need more powerful and sustainable means of purification, especially to deal with the 'Biomass Tsunami' style attacks they might launch."
