127: Chapter 127 The car rental company was dumbfounded.
"Don't worry, just text me your account details and I'll transfer the money immediately." Zhang Wei was extremely exhausted; he had to focus on driving, so he ended the call after a brief instruction.
He couldn't transfer money while on the highway, so he had to wait until he reached the next service area. He could also take a nap then.
After driving another dozen kilometers, he glanced at the rearview mirror and noticed a police car following him, though he didn't know when it had started.
At first, Zhang Wei didn't think much of it. He turned on his right signal and moved out of the passing lane to let it through.
But five minutes passed, and the police car was still following him. Zhang Wei finally realized it seemed to be coming for him.
Pulling over into the emergency lane, Zhang Wei rolled down his window. Three Police Officers got out of the car behind him and approached with wary expressions.
The leader gave Zhang Wei a salute. "Hello, please show your driver's license and vehicle registration. We received a report from the public claiming someone is attempting to steal a vehicle from a rental company. Please cooperate with our investigation."
Zhang Wei felt numb upon hearing this. He had somehow become a car thief? An awkward, bitter smile appeared on his face.
"Officer, this is all a misunderstanding." Taking out his license and registration, Zhang Wei spent a good while explaining things to the officer. He was just short of calling Zuo Hemei to prove his innocence.
Fortunately, the Police Officers were reasonable people. After understanding the situation, Zhang Wei called the rental company right in front of them.
"Sir, we have already called the police. Hurry to the police station and surrender. Strive for leniency. Remember, do not continue down the path of crime. I used to do telecom fraud in Northern Myanmar and was just released last year. As long as you perform well inside, you can still have a beautiful life when you get out."
Listening to the customer service representative's earnest advice on the other end, Zhang Wei was almost in tears. Was this person crazy? Why were they adding so much drama? And what was that about telecom fraud? It seemed he had heard something he shouldn't have.
If the Police Officers hadn't been standing right there, Zhang Wei would have definitely given the person a piece of his mind.
"I told you it's a misunderstanding. Send me the account number." Squeezing the words through his teeth, Zhang Wei hung up the phone immediately.
A moment later, the text message arrived as promised. Zhang Wei completed the transfer with the fastest hand speed of his life. Then, he showed it to the Police Officers.
"You believe me now, right? It really was just a misunderstanding."
By the time he reached the next service area, more than two hours had passed. During that time, the manager of the car rental company called repeatedly to apologize. Zhang Wei didn't hold a grudge; after all, he had driven out of Hainan Province without notifying them, which was indeed an oversight on his part.
Seeing that it was getting dark, Zhang Wei had no choice but to make do for the night at the service area. Fortunately, the temperature in southern China wasn't low. He bought a blanket at the supermarket and prepared to rough it out in the car for the night.
Driving long distances really wasn't a job for humans. He thought about spending money to hire a driver, but he was worried about accidents on the road. After all, the things in the back seat were worth at least several hundred million; he didn't dare test human nature with such valuable items.
After a nap, he continued to endure ten more hours on the highway. Zhang Wei finally returned to the City Name he had left a week ago.
When he saw the noodle shop at the entrance of Jiangnan Garden, he almost shed tears. It had been so difficult! He hadn't had a good night's sleep since leaving the W Space Agency. He was either on the road or diving. He estimated he had lost quite a bit of weight.
Opening the door to his home in Jiangnan Garden with excitement, he missed An Xiaoxi a little. He wondered if the girl would be surprised to see him.
The door opened, and Zhang Wei rubbed his eyes. The four office desks that had previously cluttered the living room were gone. An Xiaoxi was sitting in the living room playing video games.
"I'm back. Have the desks been moved?" Zhang Wei asked subconsciously.
An Xiaoxi turned her head and looked at him in surprise. Then, she threw down her game controller and rushed over.
"It seems the girl really can't do without me after all." A gratified smile appeared on his face, and he opened his arms, preparing to give An Xiaoxi a big hug.
The girl ran up to him, dodged with a quick move, and began searching all over Zhang Wei's person.
She found that Zhang Wei had nothing on him except his phone.
"Where is the stuff?"
"What stuff?" Zhang Wei was a bit surprised.
"Wenchang Chicken, Coconut Powder, Qingbu Liang, Jackfruit." An Xiaoxi stood with her hands on her hips, her eyes filled with murderous intent. "Sister Jiayan said you guys ate so well in Hainan. I figured even if there aren't fresh specialties, there would at least be some, right? Don't tell me you didn't buy anything, or you're dead."
"Ah, haha! How could that be?" Wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, Zhang Wei quickly made up a lie. "Isn't it because there were too many things that I just had them packaged and mailed back locally? They should arrive today or tomorrow. Anyway, I'm going to the bathroom first; I've been holding it the whole way."
Entering the bathroom and locking the door, Zhang Wei quickly took out his phone and hurriedly bought a bunch of local products from the official Hainan Taobao store, adding a note for SF Express air delivery. Only after finishing all this did he breathe a sigh of relief.
He had been so busy these past few days that he had long forgotten his promise to bring back local specialties. However, the girl's appearance just now still made him not know whether to laugh or cry.
Returning to the living room, he patted An Xiaoxi's small head under her disdainful gaze. "Has anything happened at home while I was away?"
An Xiaoxi curled her lip. "What could happen with me at home? However, Sister Jiayan's side rented a floor of a commercial building over in Pudong a few days ago, and she's already signed over a dozen employees. She's just waiting for you to come back for the opening ceremony."
Thinking of something, she added, "Oh right, she told me to remind you to transfer the remaining ten million as soon as you get back. There isn't much money left in the company account after renting the floor."
Zhang Wei slapped his forehead, finally remembering that he had agreed to invest twenty million into Star Jewelry.
As it turned out, ten million of his was in the stock market. He had originally wanted to take it out earlier, but information showed that it had hit a favorable trend for robot concepts, so he had delayed until now.
Opening his stock software, Zhang Wei found that the several robot concept stocks he had bought had all surged several times over the past week. He simply placed a sell order, waiting for the market to open tomorrow to sell them off bit by bit.
With a rough estimate, he had made a net profit of over 15 million. Setting aside the ten million he needed to invest, his personal savings had reached over 25 million. His hands were suddenly full of cash, and that wasn't even counting the pile of treasures in the back seat of the car.
He called Chen Jiayan and informed her that the ten million in funds would be available tomorrow, which made her breathe a sigh of relief. One had to know that with over a dozen people in the company now, they were burning money every day. With only a few million in the account, the pressure on her was truly immense.
"If the funds aren't enough, I can advance another ten million. You can just pay me back later once we make money. Don't skimp on product design and development. Also, pay attention to employee benefits."
Zhang Wei had come from a background as a corporate drone; having been caught in the rain himself, he wanted to hold an umbrella for others. His goal was to establish a conscientious enterprise with excellent quality and comprehensive benefits.
"Don't worry, I'm also on a salary. I won't withhold any benefits that should be there," Chen Jiayan laughed.
