52: Chapter 52 The food is really good.
Originally, the interrogation room was not open to the public, but considering that these few people had caught the suspect and were considered involved parties, plus the fact that they had saved Captain Jiang earlier, Zuo Hemei didn't make a big deal out of it.
As they walked down the corridor, everyone had only ever seen the inside of the Criminal Police Brigade in movies. Now that they were there in person, they were all like Granny Liu entering the Grand View Garden.
"Look," Liu Haorui nudged Zhang Wei, "that police officer is actually holding takeout."
Zhang Wei gave an apologetic smile to the officer walking toward them, then snapped at Liu Haorui, "The officer didn't travel here from ancient times; what's so strange about ordering takeout?"
An Xiaoxi's focus was quite different. She looked at the camera installed on the wall and muttered to herself, "The configuration is much better than the models on the street outside. I wonder if there's a backdoor I can hack into."
Zhang Wei was about to have a breakdown. None of these people were reliable.
He raised his hand and flicked An Xiaoxi on the forehead, "Stop thinking about useless things. Even if you could detonate a nuclear bomb, you'd better behave yourself here."
He wasn't joking. The others were fine; at most, they were just bragging. But this little girl might actually be able to hack in. If she happened to see any classified information, they might all end up inside sewing mailbags.
The group arrived at the entrance of the interrogation room, and Zuo Hemei entered the password and led everyone inside.
Unlike in the movies, the room was very spacious and brightly lit, without a hint of gloom. There was a desk in the corner, and an officer was currently taking notes. A piece of waist-high glass was embedded in one of the walls. Through the glass, one could see another room where Tian Lirong was sitting facing the glass, his hands cuffed behind his back. His eyes were vacant, as if he couldn't see the people on this side.
So this was the legendary one-way glass? Zhang Wei was a bit curious and reached out to touch it, but it didn't seem to have any special texture.
At this moment, an officer walked into the room where Tian Lirong was through another door and began the interrogation.
"Tian Lirong, we've been looking for you for a long time."
At the officer's words, Tian Lirong slumped into his chair. The moment he heard his name, he knew he was completely finished.
He hadn't done any cleanup work for the people he killed back home. His fingerprints were everywhere at the crime scene. Later, during his flight, he had killed a family of five, and someone had even witnessed him leaving. Faced with ironclad evidence, he couldn't argue his way out.
There were no desk lamps shining into the suspect's eyes, nor any pork chop rice to move him into a confession. After a simple interrogation, Tian Lirong's psychological defenses had collapsed, and he confessed everything, including the assassination attempt on Captain Jiang yesterday. However, the officers were quite surprised to learn that he had only accidentally injured Jiang Yuanan.
Twenty minutes later, the officer in charge of recording said to Zuo Hemei, "Captain Zuo, the suspect has confessed everything. The Evidence Division also found a short knife in his nylon bag. After spraying it with luminol reagent, there was a blood reaction, and the width of the blade matches Captain Jiang's wound. With witness testimony, physical evidence, and the suspect's confession all present, the case can be closed."
Zuo Hemei nodded with satisfaction. Only a day had passed since Captain Jiang was stabbed, and not only was the case solved, but the cold case of the wanted criminal Tian Lirong was also cracked. Although the brigade hadn't put in much effort, the credit would certainly go to them.
"Thank you for your enthusiastic help. I will report it truthfully to the City Name bureau leaders and apply for a commendation for you. I expect that in a few days, when the funds are approved, I will notify you to come and collect them." Zuo Hemei said to everyone as she led them out of the room.
Then, back in the office, Zhang Wei signed the transcript again. Just as they were about to leave, Zuo Hemei smiled, "It's almost sunrise now. It's rare for you to visit, so let me take you to the cafeteria for breakfast before you go. It's a token of my appreciation for your assistance."
"Captain Zuo, you're too kind." Zhang Wei said it was embarrassing, but he really wanted to see what the food at the Criminal Police Brigade was like. Everyone else also looked expectant.
Half an hour later.
Zuo Hemei watched with a wry smile as An Xiaoxi ate her fourth steamed bun. Next to her, Liu Haorui was battling his second bowl of ramen. It wasn't that she was worried about her meal card; it was just that the contrast between them and moments ago was too great. They looked exactly like reincarnated starving ghosts.
"Little girl, slow down, make sure you don't choke." Zuo Hemei couldn't help but offer a reminder.
Zhang Wei really wanted to pretend he didn't know the two of them. Although the food at the Criminal Police Brigade was great, and the chef's cooking wasn't any worse than a big restaurant's, their table manners were just too outrageous.
Thinking of this, Zhang Wei subconsciously added another meat bun for himself. Getting a free meal, especially from the Brigade, was really good!
After eating and drinking their fill, the group received permission and took a group photo in the brigade cafeteria. Zhang Wei planned to print it out and distribute it to everyone; this could be considered a unique adventure, as ordinary people could never get in here.
By the time the group left the Criminal Police Brigade, it was already past seven in the morning. Liu Haorui, Zhang Hong, and Wang Sheng took a taxi back to the greenhouse area, while Zhang Wei drove An Xiaoxi back to Jiangnan Garden.
"Lately, my days and nights have been flipped. I feel like I'm constantly dealing with jet lag." Zhang Wei said with a yawn.
An Xiaoxi curled her lip, "That just means you're old. For us young people, pulling an all-nighter is no big deal."
"Just don't go bald at twenty from staying up late." With that, Zhang Wei went back to his room to catch up on sleep.
When he woke up, it was already past three in the afternoon. Zhang Wei got up and checked his bank account balance. After receiving ten million from the rent for the imperial seal last time, and giving two million to An Xiaoxi and the others, plus his previous balance, there was now over 8.5 million in the card. While happy, Zhang Wei also thought about how to spend this money.
Considering that his father was still in a wheelchair, he definitely needed to hire a domestic helper who could help with cleaning and look after his father, which would save his mother a lot of effort.
However, this wouldn't cost much money, so Zhang Wei decided to return to his hometown tomorrow to see if there were any good new houses near the small town.
He had lived in the old family house for so many years. Not to mention the poor environment and security, it also lacked an elevator, which made it extremely inconvenient for his father's wheelchair to get up and down.
Eight million might only buy a three-bedroom apartment in City Name, but back in his hometown, it would be more than enough to buy a villa and cover the renovation costs.
The apartment Zhang Wei was renting in City Name was also quite nice, and he didn't want to move for now. When he earned more in the future, he would go straight for the ultimate goal: getting a large flat by the Huangpu River.
Having made up his mind, Zhang Wei found An Xiaoxi, told her he was going back to his hometown tomorrow, and asked her to help him buy a train ticket.
Just kidding! With a hacker girl by my side, why would I need to scramble for train tickets like a mortal?
"You might as well just be lazy to death." An Xiaoxi retorted, but she still helped him get it done.
Zhang Wei ordered a milk tea for the young girl as a reward, then went out to attend his private tutoring session.
After having a few meals with Sun Yicheng, he could clearly feel that their relationship was getting closer and closer. Thinking about how his little brother had been suffering for a long time, he couldn't help but secretly resolve himself. Today, he would definitely try to break his limits.
