194: A match made in heaven!

Captain Lei had finished up his work, and Zhou Hengbei and the other Nurses weren't idle either, working together to eliminate the few remaining zombies in the vicinity, while Jiang Dai and Meng Suisui dealt with the half-dead zombies that still posed a threat.

Although Meng Suisui and Meng Qibao's combat strength couldn't compare to Captain Lei and the others, they were still more than capable of handling three or four zombies; unless they were ganged up on, they wouldn't find it difficult to cope.

Jiang Dai and Shen Zhen were less capable.

Jiang Dai had two children with her, which inevitably made her movements a bit sluggish, and as for Shen Zhen, today was her first time killing a zombie.

No matter how skilled she was at handling corpses in her daily life, it was merely minor work; when it came to chopping zombie bones, her knife hand would tremble.

But the two of them tried their best; after dealing with the zombies at hand, they collected crystal cores while discussing giving them to Bai Wanning.

Neither of them had awakened abilities, so the crystal cores were not of much use to them.

Shen Zhen whispered to her Sister, "Give the crystal cores to Bai Wanning and let her exchange them for some supplies for Guoguo."

As for herself, being well-fed and hydrated was enough.

Guoguo, strapped to his mother's back, wasn't idle either; the little guy held a small stick in his hand, and whenever a zombie approached, he would vigorously swing the stick, aiming for its head without hesitation.

Although he was young, he understood in his heart that if he didn't hit the zombies, he would be bitten; his mother had taught him, and he remembered it well!

He absolutely did not want to be bitten!

This scene fell into Captain Lei's eyes, and his gaze slowly softened.

He had originally decided never to have children again in this life, but this resilient and intelligent child in front of him suddenly made him waver.

If his and Wanning's child could also grow up to be this strong and clever, perhaps... having one wouldn't be bad?

His heart stirred, and he instinctively turned to look at Bai Wanning.

Bai Wanning was directing her water snakes to finish up when she suddenly felt a chill, as if she was being stared at by some burning gaze.

She paused, turned her head, and indeed met Captain Lei's fervent and deep gaze.

Bai Wanning immediately shivered... Was this the time to look at her?

She rolled her eyes, too lazy to bother with him, and turned her head to continue watching the front.

The slaughter continued, and everyone worked together, finally clearing all the zombies outside the hospital.

Captain Lei led everyone to the hospital entrance, looking at the tightly closed automatic doors; he stepped forward and pressed his palm against the glass.

High temperature was instantly released, and the glass slowly melted.

Everyone filed in, entering the hospital interior.

The hall was empty, the corpses had been dragged away, leaving only melted flesh winding across the ground in eerie traces.

Bai Zhan looked at Captain Lei and snorted coldly, "You think you're the only big shot in this team?"

Captain Lei was speechless.

He never thought of himself as a big shot. But as a man who wanted to pursue Bai Zhan's Sister, he could only grin, give Bai Zhan an awkward smile, and force out a hint of flattery.

"Let's rest for a bit," Bai Wanning said, her tone gentle but firm. "Those who are tired can rest on this floor; once we're ready, we'll go up to the fourth floor."

Anyway, the objective was clear, and the zombies on this floor had all been dealt with; it was perfectly reasonable to take this time to recuperate.

"It's better for everyone to stay together," Lu Yin quickly interjected before anyone else could speak, her tone resolute.

She glared coldly at Bai Wanning, then added, "Although it seems like most of the zombies have been cleared, who can guarantee they're all gone? Instead of risking scattering, it's better for everyone to act together, so no one accidentally falls into danger."

"I hope it's you who falls in," Bai Wanning thought indifferently, shrugging her shoulders and lazily replying, "Do whatever you want."

Her original intention was simply to take care of the team members, as everyone was tired after the big battle just now; she just wanted them to rest for a while, but Lu Yin insisted on causing trouble, stirring up panic. In this situation, who could truly rest easy?

Sure enough, just as she expected, the other Nurses and children also expressed their willingness to continue moving forward with the team.

Seeing this, Lu Yin's face showed a triumphant smile, as if she had won a victory.

Bai Wanning found it amusing, "Crazy."

She subtly rolled her eyes, then turned and followed Captain Lei and the others upstairs.

The elevator had long been broken, so they could only climb the rarely used emergency stairs step by step.

The first two floors had already been cleared by the water snakes she summoned, but the water snakes were still busy with cleanup on the second floor, so they had to continue upwards, heading straight for the third floor.

However, as soon as they reached the stairwell, a pile of corpses lay stacked like a small mountain.

Captain Lei's gaze turned cold, and he immediately turned to everyone, saying, "Stay where you are, don't move."

With that, he summoned his Flame Sword, flames coiling around the blade like a scorching ice pop; he raised it high, then brought it down with a fierce chop.

Fire erupted, and the blazing flames cut through the decaying corpses like tofu, scorching the remaining zombies black.

Some zombies, sensing the anomaly, stumbled and tried to retreat, but ultimately couldn't escape the high-temperature incineration, letting out a horrific wail as they were completely consumed by the flames.

Unfortunately, as soon as the flames died down, more zombies swarmed from above.

They felt no pain, only the instinctive urge to feast and bite.

Lu Yin, standing at the back of the team, frowned and glanced back at Bai Wanning, asking in a sarcastic tone, "What's going on? I thought Sister Bai had already cleared all the zombies."

Bai Wanning glanced at her, too lazy to respond.

But seeing the woman's agitated demeanor, she suddenly thought that biting her might not be a bad idea. Her lips curved slightly, and she said in a light tone, "If you had said earlier that you wanted to come, I would have had the water snakes clear a path especially for you. What a pity, little Sister Lu Yin, you're so impatient; we can only make do."

The words sounded gentle, but the sarcasm within them pierced Lu Yin's heart like a knife.

Lu Yin's face instantly turned pale, her eyes reddening; she habitually tried to contact Captain Lei, but Da Cheng pulled her back.

"Da Cheng!" she exclaimed.

Da Cheng was visibly annoyed, frowning and saying, "Captain Lei is busy fighting zombies; do you think this is the time for you to cause trouble?"

He couldn't help but inwardly grumble, wondering if he had a screw loose for actually expecting this woman to do something useful at a crucial moment.

Originally, he wanted Captain Lei to have an extra "silly sweet girl" by his side to make things easier to control. But who knew this woman wasn't silly, she was stupid!

Lu Yin was scolded, and stomped her foot in anger, yet she didn't dare to retort; after all, in this small team, only Da Cheng was still willing to take her.

She knew that if she upset him, no one would ever be willing to take her on missions again.

As for Captain Lei, he chose to remain silent regarding this minor squabble; he continued to burn corpses and chop with a blank expression, as if he hadn't heard anything at all.

After the zombies were completely burned, he didn't waste words, simply looked up and said indifferently, "Continue forward."

The team set off again.

The flames in the stairwell had not yet dissipated, while Bai Wanning's water snakes silently moved through each floor, harvesting without a sound.

The two seemed like a match made in heaven, one wielding fire, the other controlling water, not interfering with each other, yet working together with astonishing efficiency.
