145: Fishy smell, 4 AM
According to his guess, this might be the scammer's work area. Because he knew too many people in his living area, it was easy to be seen by acquaintances.
And a work area was easier to understand; he was more familiar with it here, and relatively speaking, there were fewer acquaintances.
However, this information was clearly not enough, and he decided to dig deeper.
“Hmm, not bad. This information is very useful, I’ve noted it down.” With that, Ye Lin continued to sit by the door, silent.
The boss saw this and thought, “He’s not satisfied, is he?”
This plague god, he had to be sent away, otherwise the day’s business would be ruined. He started to rack his brain.
Suddenly, he seemed to think of something, his eyes lit up, “Police Officer, I just thought of another strange thing.”
“Oh, tell me.”
“That scammer left at 4 AM, 4 AM. I just came out to use the restroom and saw him.”
“At the time, I was still wondering why this guy, after finding a young lady, didn’t sleep a bit longer and left so early. Now that I think about it, there must be a reason. I don’t know if it’s helpful to you.”
Left at 4 AM?
Why the rush?
Was he afraid the lady would wake up and cause him trouble?
Logically, that shouldn't be the case.
Seeing Ye Lin’s thoughtful expression, the boss felt there was hope and quickly added, “I think I heard him muttering something like, ‘It’s too late now, I’m going to get scolded again,’ and then he rushed off.”
It was hard to say if this clue was useful, so Ye Lin could only note it down for now.
“Is there anything else strange?” Ye Lin continued to ask.
“No.” The boss raised his right hand, patted his chest and said, “I’m a puppy if I’m lying to you, there’s really nothing else.”
Ye Lin glanced at him and said indifferently, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If I find out you omitted anything, I’ll just keep waiting here.”
“If there’s an omission, you can sit here all day, haha.” The boss said with a forced smile, secretly urging this plague god to leave quickly.
“Alright then, thank you for cooperating with us.” Ye Lin stood up. With no more clues, he didn't want to make things difficult for the man.
The boss stood at the door, watching Ye Lin leave, until Ye Lin was out of his sight. Then his expression changed, “Bah, always bullying us.”
The night passed uneventfully.
The next day, as soon as work started, Qi Shan and Wang Longxin came to report. Wang Longxin was beaming with excitement, “Brother, there really is a case very similar to this one.”
“Also from the Normal University?”
“No, it’s from Yuezhou Medical University.” Wang Longxin said, “I found it in the system, and then called to verify it. I think it should be the same person, and it’s his early criminal history.”
Ye Lin took the case file and read it carefully.
The case occurred last summer. The complainant was a student from the Medical University, also a young lady. According to her description, one Saturday morning, as she was walking on campus, a middle-aged man approached her, pretending to ask for directions, and then used the same trick to claim he was a secret agent.
The lady was a bit skeptical but still cooperated with him, pretending to be a couple on campus.
However, the lady also kept her guard up and didn't completely trust him, always maintaining a certain distance.
The scammer continued his act, saying that a team member was injured and hoped the lady would accompany him to see him.
The lady went, and it was also Yunshan Hospital. When the scammer said he had no money and asked the lady to pay, she immediately realized what was happening, cursed him as a scammer, and then he ran away.
Afterward, the lady reported the case. Because there was no financial loss, the Police Station didn't take it seriously, just registered it and that was it.
Ye Lin lowered his head in thought. According to this report, there was a high possibility that it was the same person committing the crime; at least the modus operandi was the same.
However, he noticed two details in the case file: one was that the scammer in this case didn't use an earpiece but contacted his superior using a mobile phone.
Considering everything, Ye Lin thought this guy must have realized that using a mobile phone lacked that atmosphere, so he later switched to an earpiece to make it seem more urgent, leaving the victim no time to think too much.
At the same time, a sentence in the case file also caught Ye Lin’s attention: the lady mentioned that she actually believed him at first.
It was only later, when she was pretending to be a couple with this man, that she smelled a fishy odor on him. She had hated this smell since she was a child, so she was particularly sensitive to it.
As soon as the man got close to her, she felt uncomfortable. This was also an important reason why she wasn't scammed; who would want to stay with a smell they disliked?
Ye Lin pointed to this line of text, “Did you notice this?”
Wang Longxin and Qi Shan turned their heads to look, then exchanged glances.
Qi Shan said, “Brother Ye, do you mean this scammer sells fish?”
“That’s not necessarily true, what if he bought fish at the market that day? That should also be possible, right?” Wang Longxin retorted.
Ye Lin didn't speak. This information was hard to say for sure, but his intuition told him it was useful, especially after the system gave him [Deduction Skill]. He always had a special feeling for key clues in a case.
This fishy smell was definitely useful; he just didn't know what for yet.
He looked up at Qi Shan and asked, “What about you? Have you reconnected with the complainant?”
Qi Shan nodded, opened her notebook, and said seriously, “Yes, I contacted the complainant yesterday. She was still quite emotional. I comforted her for a long time before she calmed down.”
“Mm.” Ye Lin responded approvingly.
This was the advantage of a female Police Officer, especially when it came to matters between men and women. It was very difficult for a male Police Officer to gain the trust of a female victim; it could only be a woman, there was no other way.
Qi Shan continued, “The complainant said she really couldn’t remember anything else, except that when they were in the hotel that night, she always felt he had another smell on him.”
“Manly smell?” Wang Longxin joked.
“No.” Qi Shan said, looking at her notebook, “The complainant had previous sexual experience. She was very sure it wasn’t the smell of a man, it was another smell.”
“It wouldn’t be a fishy smell too, would it?” Wang Longxin said, a little surprised.
Ye Lin’s mind lit up, and he said definitively, “It’s very likely to be a fishy smell, or a mixture of other smells.”
“After you two went to investigate yesterday, I went to the hotel where they checked in again and got another clue from the boss.”
“He mentioned two points: one is that this person probably works nearby; the other is that this person left at 4 AM and also said he might be late.”
Wang Longxin looked puzzled, “What does this mean?”
“It doesn’t mean anything viewed in isolation, but what if you combine it with your clues?” Ye Lin prompted.
