171: Strange Egg
A Fei collected some gbl cultist forehead badges, and the four of them entered the second room.
As soon as they entered the room, their view was blocked by a row of tall jars, making A Fei's eyes light up.
Without waiting for the others to act, A Fei swung his long blade and struck the row of jars first, hoping they might hide some useful supplies.
With one strike, more than half of the jars shattered, revealing the monsters hidden behind them.
Looking at the scene, they realized this temple was a veritable collection of monsters; not only were there Octopus Monsters, but also Tree Spirits, Yakshas, and similar creatures wandering around the room.
Before they could move, the four felt the room begin to shake violently, similar to the tremors in Purgatory.
“What is that! Dodge, quickly!” Jian Wuxie suddenly shouted.
The other three looked up to see several massive octopus tentacles hanging down from above, plowing through the floor and crushing everything toward them.
Quan Wudi was stunned; those tentacles were as hard as steel, crushing everything in their path and severely injuring all the monsters they rolled over.
The four quickly hid behind the unbroken jars, as no tentacles came toward this side.
Once those tentacles left, the four breathed a sigh of relief; those tentacles were simply too large.
“Could those have been Rotus's tentacles just now? They're that big?” Jian Wuxie asked with lingering fear.
“It seems so, but why would it attack this room?” Quan Wudi asked.
The four thought for a moment but still couldn't figure it out.
They waited for a while, and seeing that the tentacles didn't reappear, they felt slightly more at ease.
A Fei casually shattered the row of jars on the other side.
Seeing that there was nothing inside the jars, A Fei shook his head in disappointment.
Suddenly, the familiar vibration returned as four more tentacles hung down, plowing the ground as they rushed toward them.
The four had no choice but to dodge back to the other side again.
Some of the monsters that had already been crushed were hit again; this time, they were crushed to death instantly, vanishing into white light.
After these four tentacles left, Quan Wudi said, “This isn't going to happen at regular intervals, is it?”
Xiao Hongyuan noticed something and pointed to the marks on the ground. “Look, is there a pattern to the marks left by these tentacles?”
Jian Wuxie looked closely for a long time and said, “What pattern? The intervals are about the same?”
A Fei noticed something, looked at the marks on the ground, then at the jars he had broken. “Are you saying these tentacles come out because I broke these jars?”
Xiao Hongyuan nodded. “Exactly. All the tentacles pass through the original positions of the jars. I think there might be some magic or device in the jars so that as soon as someone breaks them, Rotus can sense it and uses its tentacles to crush the room.”
A Fei looked at the remaining jars in the room and felt a bit unhappy. Didn't this mean he couldn't just break jars whenever he wanted anymore?
Once the four understood the reason, they carefully avoided all the jars and killed all the injured monsters.
Especially those Octopus Monsters; A Fei put all the specimens and tentacles they dropped into his backpack.
Quan Wudi asked, “Little Fei, you're picking up those tentacles... you're not actually going to listen to the Moonlight Tavern proprietress and make those octopus balls, are you?”
A Fei nodded. “Of course. Socia said those balls are delicious and can even restore health.”
“But those octopuses were transformed from humans; isn't that basically cannibalism?” The more Quan Wudi spoke, the more disgusted he felt.
A Fei ignored Quan Wudi and continued picking up tentacles and stuffing them into his bag.
The four continued forward. This room was filled with Octopus Monsters, and in the corners, there were many white, egg-like things slowly wriggling. They stood upright on the ground, fixed in place by white fibrous material at the base.
The group first quickly cleared out the Octopus Monsters.
Jian Wuxie curiously walked up to an egg and gave its surface a sharp thrust with his long sword.
With a squelch, the long sword slid smoothly into the egg.
Jian Wuxie yanked the sword out, and the egg instantly burst, spilling green slime all over the floor.
Looking at the large puddle of slime on his sword and under his feet, Jian Wuxie curled his lip in disgust. “What is this? It's way too gross!”
Quan Wudi also approached an egg out of curiosity and observed it closely; having seen Jian Wuxie's example, he didn't recklessly attack it.
Quan Wudi watched the egg wriggle, and it actually started moving faster and faster.
“Hey, look at this! This thing is still wriggling, and it's getting faster!” Quan Wudi shouted to the other three.
Hearing this, the three turned to look at Quan Wudi and indeed saw that the egg in front of him was wriggling faster at a visible rate.
With a squelch, the egg burst right in front of Quan Wudi, splashing him with green slime as two large and one small Octopus Monster jumped out from within.
A panicked Quan Wudi was about to wipe the slime off his face when the green octopus that came out of the egg suddenly spat a black, ink-like substance onto his face.
Quan Wudi instantly entered a blinded state.
Before he could retreat, another red octopus lunged up, its tentacles instantly wrapping around Quan Wudi's body. The octopus's body directly covered his head and began to suck violently.
The octopus on Quan Wudi gave his head three hard suctions before finally letting go.
Jian Wuxie saw this and immediately wanted to go support him, but the slime on the floor was extremely sticky, greatly reducing his speed.
Fortunately, A Fei was relatively close; his long blade instantly transformed into a Shadow Whip, dragging the two octopuses toward himself.
A Fei hit the two octopuses beside him with a Full Moon Slash followed by a Ghost Slash, instantly killing them.
However, there was still a Small Octopus that everyone had missed. It suddenly jumped up, its tentacles whipping Quan Wudi like small knives and knocking him to the ground.
Xiao Hongyuan reacted then, quickly closing in with a Five-Stage Slash and using an Uppercut to knock the Small Octopus flying toward A Fei.
A Fei followed up with a few slashes, killing the Small Octopus as well.
Only then did Quan Wudi climb up from the ground, covered in green slime with black ink on his head, looking incredibly pathetic.
But the group had no time to mock him now, as Jian Wuxie noticed several other eggs had also begun wriggling rapidly.
Xiao Hongyuan and the other two quickly rushed toward those eggs, wanting to break them before the octopuses emerged to see if they could prevent their birth.
Jian Wuxie was the closest; he slammed the ground with a Mountain Collapse Strike, and the Shockwave spread out, instantly shattering three eggs. Slime flowed everywhere, but no octopuses hatched.
