30: A fight to the death?
Everyone quickly took the opportunity to climb over the gate, preparing to retreat into the woods, but at this moment, a player Luo Feng had called over arrived with a squad.
Neither side had much cover when they met, so a close-quarters clash erupted.
Li Xiao’s side had more people and higher health. In a direct shootout, Li Xiao eliminated the entire squad at the cost of one scout and one low-health infantryman, while the player, seeing the unfavorable situation, immediately fled.
“Run!”
Li Xiao didn’t have time to grieve for the fallen soldiers and hurriedly called for everyone to evacuate, but then he heard intense gunfire erupting inside the base.
“They’re not dead yet?!”
Li Xiao was both surprised and delighted, immediately shouting, “Brothers! Break back in! Rescue our people!”
“Yes!”
“Charge!”
Everyone unhesitatingly turned around and charged back into the base.
At this point, they saw a machine gun in the barracks still firing wildly at the outside, and over twenty soldiers outside couldn’t get close.
“What good are you all? Charge up there and take him out!”
Luo Feng roared in frustration. Because of this one soldier, his plan to sandwich Li Xiao failed, and he suffered heavy losses.
“Commander, the enemy’s health is too high; we can’t even scratch him! Charging in is just suicide.”
“Damn it!” Luo Feng’s knuckles cracked as he clenched his fist.
In his previous battle, he had already noticed that Li Xiao’s troops’ health was unusually high; a one-for-one exchange in a direct shootout was impossible.
“Grenade barrage! Throw all your grenades in there!”
Moments later, over a dozen grenades were thrown into the barracks, and a series of explosions silenced the enemy’s fire.
“Go!”
Seeing this, Luo Feng gestured for his subordinates to charge in.
But just at that moment, two piercing shrieks came from a distance, and then Luo Feng saw two rocket-propelled grenades, trailing orange-red exhaust, flying into the crowd of people rushing towards the barracks.
Boom! Boom!!
Black smoke mixed with shrapnel burst forth, instantly knocking down over a dozen soldiers.
“What’s going on?!” Luo Feng was stunned. The absolute numerical advantage he had just moments ago was now reduced by two-thirds in the blink of an eye.
“Charge! Take them out!”
Li Xiao coldly ordered, and everyone charged forward.
Seeing the situation turn dire, Luo Feng quickly rallied his remaining dozen or so soldiers to defend the command center. At this point, he had no other choice; if the command center was blown up, he would be finished anyway.
Li Xiao anxiously rushed into the barracks. The first thing he saw were the bodies of Zhang Shuang and two infantrymen lying on the ground. His eyes instantly turned red, revealing an unconcealable killing intent.
Zhao Feipeng, seeing this, quickly ran inside and found Di Yun, covered in blood, hiding behind a storage locker. He had discarded his machine gun and was holding a Type 05 pistol.
“Boss… Zhang Shuang… he…” Di Yun stammered, his eyes full of tears.
Li Xiao walked in and squeezed Di Yun’s shoulder: “Don’t be sad. As long as you’re alive, you can avenge them!”
Di Yun’s tens of thousands of health points were now less than a thousand. Li Xiao unhesitatingly added another five thousand points to his cap. At this point, his life pool, including what he had just acquired, still had three thousand points.
“Let’s go! Let’s go kill that bastard!”
The detached two-story command center building gave Luo Feng a final defensive advantage, but this advantage seemed utterly helpless given that Li Xiao’s troops each had only six hundred health points remaining.
Especially since Tian Chao Squad had already used up all their throwables earlier.
“Flashbangs!”
Using the two barracks as cover, Li Xiao and his team, with over a hundred grenades in their hands, continuously bombarded the command center like man-made artillery shells.
Although fragmentation grenades caused very little damage to buildings, they were highly effective against enemies inside. Even if enemies hid in the rooms, some grenades would inevitably fly through uncovered windows, killing or wounding Tian Chao Squad members.
After exhausting their grenades, Li Xiao gave the order, and the troops charged. Di Yun led the charge into the first floor, and along the way, people kept firing, but he took them all down by trading blows.
Until they reached the Commander’s bedroom on the second floor, only Luo Feng remained, grinning sinisterly, holding a gun in one hand and a remote control in the other.
“Don’t move, all of you! Look what this is?”
Li Xiao, who had fallen behind the others, recognized it at a glance: it was a detonator for timed C4 explosives.
His heart sank. This Luo Feng seemed truly insane, actually intending to die with him.
So he calmly took a step back, planning to retreat, but the sharp-eyed Luo Feng shouted, “Li Xiao! If you dare to move another step, I’ll press it!”
Hearing this, Li Xiao composed himself and feigned calmness, saying, “Kid, who are you trying to fool? How many C4 explosives do you have? Can you even kill me?”
“You don’t believe me?! Look under the bed and on the ceiling!”
As Luo Feng spoke, everyone looked around and indeed found twenty to thirty C4 explosives, all wired up.
Li Xiao fell silent at this. He had been too overconfident today, not expecting the opponent to resort to such a desperate move.
He could also blame the Spark of Destruction event two days ago, which led to a massive influx of C4 explosives in the trading center.
“Li Xiao, I admit defeat at your hands. Although I don’t know how you made your troops so tanky, it doesn’t matter now. You’ll come with me! Hahahaha!!!”
Luo Feng laughed maniacally, then a fierce glint appeared in his eyes. Seeing the danger, Li Xiao shouted, “Run!”
Bang!
Just as people had yet to turn and run, a gunshot rang out from outside, followed by a thud, as if something had fallen to the ground.
Everyone looked over in unison, and there, on the ground, was a hand gripping the remote control. This scene stunned everyone, including the frozen Luo Feng.
Li Xiao immediately looked out the window. The one who fired the shot was Yan Yizhou, standing on a scrapped car, aiming his rifle.
“Oh my God…”
Li Xiao felt his legs wouldn’t obey him. Yan Yizhou’s shot was simply priceless.
He had previously arranged for Yan Yizhou to set up a firing position from the east, but then so many things happened that he had forgotten about Yan Yizhou’s presence.
If that shot just now had been even slightly off, he would have instantly ascended. His life pool, with around four thousand accumulated health, couldn’t withstand even one C4, let alone dozens.
“Ah! I’ll kill you! Li Xiao!”
Luo Feng, who took a while to react, completely collapsed, hysterically raising his gun to fire in Li Xiao’s direction, but Di Yun and others, who had already aimed at him, unceremoniously pulled their triggers.
Dozens of bullets instantly riddled Luo Feng, turning him into a sieve.
Ye Ming, seeing the danger eliminated, rushed to dismantle the C4 explosives, but Li Xiao quickly stopped him: “No need. Everyone evacuate.”
He approached Luo Feng’s corpse, and with a touch, the latter’s backpack panel popped up.
Inside, there were still over three thousand points of Steel Fuel, four hundred points of Rare Minerals, over seven hundred Star Coins, nearly twenty thousand rifle rounds, and over three hundred various types of firearms, including pistols and rifles.
