8: Chapter 8 A Dramatic Change in Attitude
Xiao Bei stood up and said respectfully, "Director Feng, I have organized more than half of it, and the rest can be completed tomorrow."
Feng Limin glanced at the documents on the desk and found that they were indeed well-organized. He felt a bit annoyed, but couldn't really lash out, so he just said coldly, "Hmm, the efficiency is not bad. Continue to work hard tomorrow and strive to finish organizing all these materials."
"Yes, Director Feng." Xiao Bei nodded.
Feng Limin snorted and turned to leave the archives room.
Watching Feng Limin's back, Chu Yue muttered in a low voice, "Why is Director Feng so strange today? He usually never comes to the archives room."
Xiao Bei smiled and didn't say much.
He knew that Feng Limin had come on purpose to give him a hard time, but he didn't care.
"Director Xiao, are you still coming in tomorrow?" Chu Yue asked.
"Of course, the work isn't finished yet." Xiao Bei said with a smile.
Chu Yue nodded, expressing great admiration: "You are truly impressive. If it were anyone else, they wouldn't have been able to stand it."
Xiao Bei shook his head: "It's nothing impressive, just doing my own job."
"Haha, then I'll keep working with you!"
After work, Xiao Bei and Chu Yue walked out of the Archives Bureau together. The afterglow of the setting sun spilled onto them, lengthening their shadows.
"Director Xiao, see you tomorrow." Chu Yue waved her hand and said with a smile.
"See you tomorrow." Xiao Bei nodded and watched Chu Yue leave.
Standing at the entrance of the Archives Bureau, Xiao Bei took a deep breath and looked up at the sky. No matter what tomorrow brought, he still needed to keep his spirits up and maintain an optimistic attitude.
Early the next morning, Feng Limin came to the office as usual, first brewed a pot of tea, and then sat with his legs crossed, reading the newspaper.
Ring! Suddenly, the ringing of the telephone on the desk broke the silence of the office.
He glanced at the caller ID and saw it was a number from the Municipal Government Office, and his heart tightened involuntarily.
Why would the Municipal Government Office call suddenly?
He hesitated for a moment before picking up the phone.
"Hello, is this Director Feng?" A steady male voice came from the other end of the line, with a tone of bureaucratic formality.
"It is me. Who is this?" Feng Limin felt a bit uneasy, but he tried his best to remain calm.
"I am Xu Xihua, Section Chief of the Personnel Division at the Municipal Government Office." The person on the other end identified himself, his voice unhurried, "Director Feng, there is a matter I need to inform you about."
Feng Limin's heart skipped a beat. Xu Xihua was a powerful figure at the Municipal Government Office and rarely called him directly. He quickly sat up straight and said respectfully, "Section Chief Xu, please go ahead."
"It is regarding Comrade Xiao Bei." Xu Xihua paused, his tone carrying a note of unquestionable authority, "The Municipal Government Office has decided to transfer him back to his original position. The transfer order has already been issued and will be sent to you today."
Upon hearing this, Feng Limin's heart sank, and his hand gripping the phone tightened involuntarily.
Xiao Bei? Transferred back to the Municipal Government Office? How is this possible?
He had clearly been "exiled" to the Archives Bureau, so why was he suddenly being transferred back?
"Section Chief Xu, this... could there be some misunderstanding?" Feng Limin asked tentatively, his tone carrying a bit of unease, "Comrade Xiao Bei just arrived at the Archives Bureau not long ago, and he hasn't fully gotten the hang of the work yet. Why is he being transferred back so suddenly?"
"Misunderstanding?" Xu Xihua let out a cold laugh, his tone tinged with sarcasm, "Director Feng, the Municipal Government Office is well aware of Comrade Xiao Bei's work capability. Transferring him to the Archives Bureau was originally just a temporary arrangement. Now the Municipal Government Office needs him back. The transfer order has been issued, so just comply."
Feng Limin could tell that Xu Xihua's tone carried a bit of impatience and even a hint of a warning.
He immediately understood—Xiao Bei's background was not simple. The Municipal Government Office was intent on transferring him back, and their attitude was unyielding, leaving no room for him to question it.
"Yes, yes, I understand." Feng Limin nodded quickly, his tone ingratiating, "Please rest assured, Section Chief Xu, I will definitely cooperate and arrange for Comrade Xiao Bei to hand over his work immediately."
"Hmm, that's good." Xu Xihua's tone softened slightly, but still carried a hint of bureaucratic authority, "Director Feng, thank you for taking care of Comrade Xiao Bei during his time at the Archives Bureau."
"Not at all, not at all, it was only right." Feng Limin gave a dry laugh, but inwardly he was bemoaning his situation.
Where had he ever taken care of Xiao Bei? He had clearly made things difficult for him at every turn. Now that the Municipal Government Office was suddenly transferring Xiao Bei back, it was clear that someone behind Xiao Bei had intervened.
After hanging up the phone, Feng Limin sat in his chair, his expression shifting uncertainly.
Recalling his attitude toward Xiao Bei yesterday, he couldn't help but feel a wave of regret.
If he had known Xiao Bei had such a powerful background, why would he have bothered to make things difficult for him?
Now, it was a mess; Xiao Bei was being transferred back, and he had become the one who had offended him.
"No, I have to remedy this immediately!" Feng Limin stood up abruptly, walked quickly out of the office, and headed straight outside...
Meanwhile, Xiao Bei had just walked into the entrance of the Archives Bureau and was preparing to go to the archives room to continue organizing documents when he suddenly heard a low male voice coming from the end of the corridor.
The tone was frivolous and carried a malicious smile: "Chu Yue, that dress of yours is quite nice. Did you just buy it?"
Xiao Bei frowned and walked toward the sound, discovering it was coming from the pantry.
He lightened his footsteps, approached the door, and through the half-open door crack, saw a slightly chubby middle-aged man standing in front of Chu Yue. The man had a greasy smile on his face, his eyes staring straight at Chu Yue.
This man was Ding Wenbin, the Office Director of the Archives Bureau.
Chu Yue was facing away from the door, holding a freshly brewed cup of tea in her hand, her expression somewhat awkward, but she still managed a forced smile: "Director Ding, you are joking. I've been wearing this dress for a long time."
"Is that so? How come I haven't seen you wear it?" Ding Wenbin feigned surprise, his tone carrying a hint of flirtation, "But you are so beautiful that you look good in anything."
Chu Yue lowered her head, her tone somewhat flustered: "Director Ding, if there is nothing else, I will go back to work."
"Hey, don't be in such a rush to leave." Ding Wenbin reached out to block Chu Yue's path, the smile on his face becoming even more brazen, "As for work, there's no rush for a moment. Look at you, busy like a little bee all day; you should take a break."
Chu Yue took a step back, her tone carrying a hint of helplessness: "Director Ding, I really have work to do. The task assigned by Director Feng isn't finished yet."
"Director Feng's task?" ...
