He read the letter from his wife for a moment.

In the letter, his wife didn’t ask about the war situation, how he was doing, or complain about daily things, unlike other men’s wives. But after he read the letter, the corners of his lips were lifted, and he couldn’t help but caress the letter with longing.

The first time he met his wife was on their wedding day. Since his marriage was an exchange for the Xue family’s money, he had no romantic feelings for his wife.

His wife never acted coquettish or fawning with him. She treated him with respect as if he were a guest in her life, keeping him at a distance. Because of this, he rarely visited her bedroom, and after so many years, they still didn’t have a child.

He thought that she was unhappy with this marriage and would leave when his family met with trouble. Unexpectedly, even during the hardest time, his wife never left him and stood firmly on his side.

That was when he started paying more attention to her. Only then did he realise that he had long fallen for her without him even noticing.

Now, when he needed provisions for the army, his wife unhesitantly used all of her dowry to buy grains at a high price and gave it all to him. She had solved his biggest trouble without asking for praise or any credit.

Facing this kind of devotion and care, how could he not be moved?

He wanted to treat her better and wanted to tell her that he liked her. He didn’t want them to respect each other like guests.

He yearned for a close relationship between husband and wife with her. But after so many years of polite yet distant interaction, he didn’t know where to start.

When the messenger saw the General go into a long silence and frown, he thought that the letter was not good news and didn’t dare to breathe loudly.

After a while, Lu Qianxuan finally snapped out of his thoughts and said, "You have done well. Go rest first."

The messenger cupped his fists and bowed before he left the room.
