To avoid making his wife feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, Fu Chen’an left the room and stood at the closed door to guard her.

Yao Zhi felt complicated when facing this situation. If he continued treating her so well, she might fall for him. But in this era, it was normal for a man to have three wives and four concubines.

The moment he heard this, the smiles on Fu Chen’an’s face disappeared instantly. He looked at his wife for a long time before he finally asked, "Why?"

Seeing the intense emotions in his eyes, Yao Zhi lowered her gaze and noticed his clenched fists. He clenched them so tightly that his hands trembled and his flesh turned white.

She didn’t know why, but when she saw him suppressing his emotions, she reached out and covered his trembling hands with her own.

Feeling his wife’s soft and warm hands, Fu Chen’an’s emotions slowly stabilized. He still felt anxious, angry, sad, confused, and disappointed. But he no longer thought that his wife hated him like before.

When she saw that he was no longer trembling like before, Yao Zhi let out a sigh of relief and said, "Husband, don’t you want to ask me why I became like this?"

"Will you tell me if I ask?" Fu Chen’an asked her back.

Yao Zhi nodded and waited.

After a moment of silence, he finally asked, "Wife, I want to know what happened to you when I’m not around. Can you tell me?"

Raising her head, Yao Zhi looked at him and replied, "Actually, I was poisoned. The poison caused me to have a huge appetite and made my body easily gain weight."

"When I visited the border market, I saved an old man, who turned out to be a divine physician. To return the favor, he took my pulse and found out about my condition."

"He gave me a pill that cures all poison. After I took the pill, the poison was expelled from my body. Because of this, my body was weakened, and I lost weight."

When he heard this, Fu Chen’an was surprised. He reached out to hold her cheeks and study her complexion. "How are you now? Do you still feel unwell anywhere?"

Noticing his worries, Yao Zhi held his hands and said, "After taking the pill, I’m no longer poisoned. It’s just that my body was damaged for a long time, and it needs time to recover."

"Is that why you can’t consummate our marriage?"

Yao Zhi didn’t know if her body had fully recovered or not. But right now, she is only sixteen years old. Even if the poison didn’t damage her body, she was too young to engage in sexual activity.

She nodded and asked, "So, can you wait until I’m fully recovered before we..."

Before she finished her words, Fu Chen’an pulled her into his arms and said, "Wife, I understand. Right now, your health is the most important. Don’t think about anything else."

After a moment of silence, he added firmly, "I won’t force you until you are ready and completely healthy. We are still young. The matter about children, let’s talk about it later."

Hearing this, Yao Zhi nodded and said, "Thank you."

After their heartfelt conversation, the two of them lay on the bed and shared a thin blanket. With the candle extinguished, only faint moonlight illuminated the room through the gaps between the door and the ground.

Feeling tired, Yao Zhi soon fell asleep. At the same time, Fu Chen’an was wide awake. He stared at the beams above them and lost himself in his thoughts.

No one knew what he was thinking for so long. Only after past midnight did he finally pull his wife into his arms, close his eyes, and go to sleep.
