311: God's Messenger
“No way, really?”
Chen Du was startled. He had just said that casually, never expecting Wu La to give him a definite answer.
“How do I do it?”
Chen Du continued to ask, following the topic.
“Just throw it over. Anything thrown at the God will be caught by him, and then returned to you as an equivalent. Even a rock from the Surface.”
“Show me,” Chen Du commanded, throwing a green-quality devouring grass to Wu La, preparing to see what this so-called God and equivalent exchange actually entailed.
Wu La had never seen this plant, but it didn't hinder his next action. He directly raised his hand and threw the devouring grass towards the Giant Egg.
Chen Du watched intently. Before the devouring grass even touched the Giant Egg, a corner of the eggshell opened from the inside out, like a window.
Then, a hand stretched out—a charred black, four-fingered arm—which snatched the devouring grass and quickly retracted.
Five seconds later.
The same spot opened again. It was still that four-fingered, charred black arm, holding a flower that was entirely emerald green with three petals.
With a gentle toss, the flower was protected by some incredible power and flew directly into Wu La's hand. The four-fingered, charred black arm also retracted as it threw the flower.
Chen Du's eyelids lowered slightly. It seemed this so-called God would directly give the equivalent exchange item to the person who had thrown the original item.
“What would happen if I had reached out to take this flower just now?”
“Nothing would happen. Anyone can directly reach out and take it.”
Chen Du nodded. This was very easy to test, and the other party couldn't possibly lie about such a thing.
Taking the flower Wu La handed over, Chen Du recognized it as a ‘Heavenly Essence Flower,’ used to increase the upper limit of a Martial Artist's Mental Energy talent.
It was indeed something on par with devouring grass, but Life Strength's effect was greater than Mental Energy, so this equivalent exchange was actually a loss.
“If I throw this flower back, will the previous item return?”
“No.”
“The God will not take back anything he has given.”
Chen Du pondered slightly. This Giant Egg was too strange.
He initially thought it was some unhatched giant beast, suspecting it was a Dragon Egg or a Phoenix Egg, or even an extraterrestrial egg.
Later, because it could spray magma, Chen Du rejected his previous deductions, thinking it might not be a living creature but rather a natural phenomenon.
But after seeing that arm just now, Chen Du again believed it was a living creature.
It was just that this creature was likely not some giant beast waiting to hatch.
Could it be an already hatched giant beast?
And this giant beast was essentially an Underground creature, in the form of an egg, and possessed the characteristic of being unable to move, which is why it was like this?
But it couldn't communicate.
For any speculation, Chen Du could find a way to refute it. For a moment, Chen Du couldn't determine what this magma egg truly was.
“What do I need to throw over to become a Domain Warrior?”
Chen Du asked the original question.
To his surprise, Wu La stammered, hesitated for a long time, and then asked:
“What is a Domain Warrior?”
Hearing this, Chen Du seemed to understand something and pressed on:
“What is above a Martial Artist?”
“A Domain Warrior?” Wu La guessed.
It seems the Underground resources are even scarcer than I imagined. Not only does he not know what a Domain Warrior is, but he doesn't even know what a Sky Soaring Warrior is!
This means the limit of combat power here is a Martial Artist!
At least, that's how the Shushu Civilization understood it.
However, the Martial Artists here should include Advanced Martial Artists; they just don't have such detailed distinctions.
Wu La saw Chen Du wasn't speaking and thought he was angry, so he quickly said:
“Although I don't know what a Domain Warrior is, I didn't lie to you!”
“As long as you throw an equivalent, you can become the Domain Warrior you desire!”
“The God is omnipotent!”
Chen Du didn't speak. Wu La's answer was like that of a devotee brainwashed by religion.
Based on its current abilities, this magma egg indeed performs equivalent exchange. Instead of understanding it as omnipotent, it's better to interpret it as a garbage recycling station that takes everything!
However, it only becomes useful when a certain resource is overly abundant.
No wonder this place is so desolate. It seems the strength of the Underground people is generally very weak.
To approach the Giant Egg and throw an item at it, this process usually requires the strength of a Martial Artist; a Quasi-Warrior probably can't get close.
Moreover, this place is terribly poor, and those with resources are probably few and far between. Unless certain resources are truly in excess, the mechanism of equivalent exchange won't be very effective.
Because it's an equivalent exchange, there's no real profit.
Actually, there's one resource that has always been abundant, but Chen Du plans to use it at the end.
Immediately, he stopped dwelling on the issue of equivalent exchange:
“What's with all this magma? Earlier, I saw you collecting some to take back.”
Wu La seemed very afraid of the yellow-haired younger sister. All of Chen Du's questions were answered instantly:
“This magma is a gift from the God. It sprays out from the egg once every hour. The reason we live here is because the temperature is suitable.”
“The Underground is very cold. Our Shushu Civilization wandered this Gloomy Land for a long time and stumbled upon this place by accident.”
“Getting too close to the God would cause us to die from the heat, so we established our main camp at a distance and have multiplied here for generations.”
“The best and most comfortable temperature in our civilization is reserved for the strongest group of people to live in. The remaining areas are farther away, and the temperature is relatively much lower.”
“These gifts can provide a month's worth of heat and are essential for the daily lives of those with little combat ability.”
Chen Du listened silently, secretly matching it with the information he already knew.
If this Shushu Civilization were on the Surface, it couldn't even be called a civilization; it would only be a tribe, and the most inferior kind at that.
Because they don't even have Sky Soaring Warriors.
From Wu La's words, Chen Du learned that this hundred-thousand-meter-deep Underground had its own world, and the intensity here was far lower than on the Surface.
This gave Chen Du more assurance regarding safety.
Also, the Giant Egg has probably existed for a long time; normal life forms would have hatched long ago, right?
This further strengthened Chen Du's belief that the magma egg was either an unknown natural phenomenon or another strange mode of life.
“What's beyond the Gloomy Land?”
“Are there any exits here that lead to the Surface?”
Wu La shook his head at both questions, stating directly that he had only lived in this area since birth and his knowledge was limited.
Chen Du nodded slightly, not surprised by the answer, but for safety's sake, he still asked:
“Are there any life forms here that can fly?”
“Excluding those with wings.”
Chen Du understood from the other party's words that the Shushu Civilization was just one of the civilizations living in this Gloomy Land, or rather, near this Giant Egg.
Their lack of Sky Soaring Warriors didn't mean other civilizations lacked them.
“Yes!”
“They wear masks like you, but their ears are very large, and they call themselves God's Envoy!”
Large ears?
Could it be the vanished Big Ear Civilization!?
Chen Du speculated in his mind.
