Chapter 71: The Meeting
Chapter 71: The Meeting
Arix laughed, causing her psychic power output to pause for a second. Vita was helping her, and she gently reminded Arix. Arix quickly focused again.
"Grandpa, I need to concentrate on the treatment now. Please inform the Alliance’s military research institute that I can help them develop a potion for treating psychic power. Set the time for three days from now," Arix said after a moment of thought.
"Leave it to me! You focus on your treatment," Matis promised with a nod.
Arix trusted her grandfather and then turned to Sims with a comforting smile. "I know you care for me the most, but don’t blame Grandpa. This is something I’ve always wanted to do; it’s just happening a bit sooner."
With that, Arix closed her eyes again, fully focusing on repairing the fragments of Draven’s psychic world with Vita.
Once they started, they couldn’t stop.
The argument outside had been too intense for Arix to ignore, so she and Vita had found a way to pause briefly to say a few words. Now, she quickly returned to her task.
"What a wonderful child!" Sims said, pulling out a small handkerchief as he cried, overwhelmed with emotion.
"She’s still my granddaughter," Matis said, trying to tease his old friend.
Sims put away the handkerchief and gave a cold laugh. "My term ends next year. I’m quite tired of the Fifth Legion. I think I’ll return to the Third."
Matis’s breath caught, and he struggled to keep his composure. Trembling, he said, "It’s so noisy here, and I’m sorry what? What did you just say? Oh... I didn’t hear anything you said. I have a meeting to attend. Arix, I’ll leave you in Sims’ care. I must go now."
With that, Matis hurried away.
Sims watched Matis’s hasty retreat and coldly smiled, feeling victorious. "Hmph, you think you can compete with me for Moon Pie’s love?"
Late at night, the five admirals had a rare reunion after many years.
Admiral of the First Legion: Mael.
Admiral of the Second Legion Admiral: Sykes.
Admiral of the Third Legion Admiral: Virek.
Admiral of the Fourth Legion Admiral: Fane.
Admiral of the Fifth Legion Admiral: Matis.
This emergency meeting, called by Matis, also included the president of the military research institute, Quillan, and the Alliance President, Zeta.
Despite only having seven people, each was a pillar of the Alliance, the leaders of the interstellar realm.
In the meeting room, Zeta sat at the head of the table, with three people on each side.
Apart from Zeta, the others were middle-aged men over 50.
Quillan wore a military uniform under a white lab coat. he had just rushed here from his lab, his hair still messy.
The five admirals wore olive-green uniforms, each with at least 5-8 highest honor medals on their chests.
Zeta, the youngest at around 30, wore a white presidential uniform. He looked at Matis and asked, "Mr. Kering, what is so urgent that you called this meeting?"
"And why is Quillan here? Does it involve him?" Mael asked, puzzled.
"We just finished a battle with the insectoids, and now this emergency meeting?" Sykes complained.
"I haven’t finished my experiment; I need to get back right after this," Quillan said, adjusting his glasses.
"Speaking of which, Matis, when will you return Master Sims to me?" Virek asked with a smile.
Fane remained silent, his expression cold.
Ignoring Virek, Matis cleared his throat and said solemnly, "I gathered everyone here today to announce something very important."
At this, everyone fell silent and listened intently.
Matis looked around at everyone, then dropped a bombshell, "There’s hope for curing damaged psychic worlds now."
Matis’s words caused the entire room to fall silent for a moment. Then, a burst of exclamations erupted.
"I’ll give you three seconds, and I want all the details on this!" Quillan stood up, eyes shining as he looked at Matis, his voice filled with curiosity.
"Has Master Sims finally done it? We’re finally seeing hope before we die!" Virek exclaimed excitedly.
"I think it must be our Psychic Ware masters who did it. Everyone knows only Psychic Ware can treat psychic power diseases," Fane said, dismissively.
"I don’t care it’s a Master Chemist or a Psychic Ware master. If they find a cure for that, I’ll salute them every time I meet them," Sykes said heartily.
"The nightmare of this era is finally ending," Mael said with relief.
"Mr. Kering, stop teasing us. Who is the master that discovered the cure?" Zeta asked urgently.
It wasn’t unusual for the Alliance President and the admirals to lose their composure over matters.
The situation had plagued the Alliance and the Empire for centuries.
It was a fatal illness that current medicine couldn’t cure, affecting both civilians and soldiers.
Every year, the death toll was staggering, rivaling even that of insectoid attacks.
At least with insectoids, there was a chance to fight back. But with such severe psychic power disease, unless one could afford the expensive Psychic Ware, there was no hope.
Even with Psychic Ware, it only delayed the inevitable. Those who couldn’t afford it were left to count down their remaining days in despair.
Matis remained calm in the face of everyone’s excitement, a slight smile forming on his lips. "I’m sorry to say, the person I’m referring to is neither Master Sims nor a Psychic Ware master."
"Then who is it? Matis, don’t make me come over there. I might be a civilized man, but you’re pushing it!" Sykes cursed in frustration.
"Count me in if we’re hitting Matis. I’ve had enough of him. He’s been keeping Master Sims from returning to the Third Legion for three years now," Virek added angrily.
"Count me in, too."
"I’m in."
Seeing the rising anger, Matis stopped teasing and cleared his throat. "The person who can end this nightmare for the Alliance is my granddaughter, Arix Kering."
The room fell silent again.
This time, no one was angry or thought Matis was lying. They were unusually calm.
"If it’s Arix, it might be possible," Quillan mused, stroking his chin.
"A Supergiant+ psychic power combined with chemistry talents... even if it’s not possible now, it might be in the future," Virek said. He had a high regard for Arix, whose talent and potential were well-known.
"An impressive young person," Mael said approvingly.
"A well-behaved child, and she gets along well with my granddaughter. I often hear Cirilla mention her," Fane added, surprisingly not critical for this time.
"This girl is my ideal granddaughter-in-law. Too bad I don’t have a grandson. Maybe I could arrange a marriage with my grandchild," Sykes said thoughtfully.
As soon as he finished, Sykes deftly caught a pen Matis had thrown at him.
"I warn you, Sykes, don’t get any ideas about my granddaughter," Matis said angrily.
"One girl, many suitors. Especially such an outstanding one like Arix, you need to get used to it," Sykes replied, speaking in an exaggeratedly formal manner, which only added to Matis’s annoyance.
Enraged, Matis’s psychic power formed into a fist, striking at Sykes. Behind him, a phantom of a powerful tiger appeared, growling coldly at Sykes.
The other admirals, watching the scene, quietly raised psychic power shields and continued to enjoy the show.
Virek even thoughtfully added a shield for Quillan.
"Ahem," Zeta coughed, a serene dolphin appearing behind him. Then, a blue psychic power easily deflected Matis’s attack.
Zeta then stood up and bowed slightly to Matis. "Mr. Kering, I apologize for my uncle’s words. Please forgive him."
"Hmph!" Matis snorted. Then he decided not to embarrass Zeta and no longer argued with Sykes.
"What a pity. I was waiting for the show," Virek muttered quietly.
Zeta gave a helpless look at the old troublemaker Virek, then turned his stern gaze to Sykes. "Uncle Sykes, please mind your words. Otherwise, I’ll have to talk to your wife about this."
"You ruthless kid. Fine, you win!" Sykes fumed, pointing angrily at Zeta before reluctantly sitting down in silence.
The admirals exchanged glances and shared a knowing smile, as if saying, "See, Sykes is just afraid of his wife. This tactic works, let’s use it to manage any troublesome subordinates."
They chuckled to themselves, thinking they’d learned a valuable lesson.
