Chapter 85: Surviving The Wild
Chapter 85: Surviving The Wild
The soldier checked the fainted student’s condition. After confirming he was unconscious, the soldier came out of hiding. They removed the bracelet from the student who was in shock from the insect bite and quickly sent them to a waiting Lev.
For the student who fainted from the leech, the soldier felt a headache. This student wasn’t in immediate danger but was unconscious and could be at risk.
The soldier shook his head as he looked at the message carved on the tree. Then, he decided to stay with the student until he woke up. But he wasn’t going to do anything to wake the student up, so whether he could make it would depend on their luck.
The Sugli Forest was vast, and Arix and the others didn’t know what was happening to the other students.
Their first task was to find a tree suitable for making ropes. They peeled its bark and started making ropes of various thicknesses.
Once everyone had some rope, they used thin ropes to tie around their sleeves and pant legs. This way, they could effectively prevent insects from crawling into their clothes.
With basic protection done, Arix and the others began to collect ingredients that could repel insects, snakes, and ants. They also gathered medicinal ingredients when they found them.
Drexel led the group, focusing on finding a water source. In the wild, drinking water, washing, cooking, and cooling all depend on water, making it a crucial part of survival.
They moved forward, observing plant growth and the direction of dense roots. Occasionally, Drexel would put his ear to the ground, listening for the sound of water.
After a while, Drexel finally heard the faint sound of flowing water. It wasn’t loud, but it meant that a water source was nearby. Feeling pleased, Drexel stood up and blew a loud whistle with his fingers.
The four teammates who were gathering nearby immediately looked up, alert, and quickly returned to Drexel.
Soon, the five of them were together. Arix and Calista each carried some bundled medicinal ingredients. Femi had tied up a few rabbits and wild chickens with rope, while Dae-jung had used large leaves to hold a lot of fruit.
" Drexel, did you find something?" Femi asked curiously.
Drexel nodded, "I heard the gurgling of water. Let’s stick together for now and not split up."
Arix and the others agreed. Not long after, they found a creek.
With water secured, they could now start a fire and cook. Each person took on a different task: some carved wooden bowls with knives, some used sticks to make fire, and others cleaned the game by the river.
Arix was making a water filter. She carved several pieces of wood with her knife, drilled a hole in the bottom, and lined the bottom with deodorized hemp rope.
She then added layers of charcoal, stones, fine sand, stones, and water plants. She tied the simple filter high up with hemp rope and poured river water into the wood container, letting the clean water collect in the container below.
Everyone worked with enthusiasm because these tasks were new to them and seemed quite interesting. When it was finally time to eat, each person had a skewer of grilled meat and a portion of boiled filtered water.
The meal was simple, but Femi’s cooking skills were good. After tasting the food, almost everyone gave him a thumbs-up.
To keep up their strength, Drexel and his team even caught a deer and collected five bowls of blood. Each person pinched their nose to avoid the smell and drank a bowl.
In the wild, salt is essential for maintaining strength, and when there’s no salt, drinking animal blood can help replenish it.
After drinking the blood and rinsing their mouths, Arix and the team began eating and discussing their next moves.
The competition was not only about surviving in the wilderness but also about hunting fierce beasts to earn points.
"After we finish eating and resting for a bit, let’s move deeper into the forest," Dae-jung suggested. "The outer area is safer, but there are fewer beasts, so it’s hard to earn points."
"Femi and Dae-jung are the strongest fighters among us. If we’re hunting beasts, they can lead the attack. Calista and I can provide support, and Arix can finish off the beasts. How does that sound?" Drexel suggested, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
The others nodded in agreement, thinking it was a good plan.
"If we encounter something too tough to handle, we should retreat for now. Don’t push too hard. The forest is still unknown territory. Today, we should focus on exploring and understanding the environment before deciding our next steps," Drexel added after some thought.
The team agreed, ready to face the challenges ahead in their quest for survival and victory.
Half an hour passed, and Arix’s group finished their discussion. They rested for a bit before heading into the inner part of the forest.
Before reaching the inner part, Arix and the others could relax a bit. But as soon as they entered the area where strange beasts appeared, they formed an arrow-shape formation and moved forward cautiously.
Drexel held a dagger and led the way. Arix and Calista, also holding daggers, walked alertly on either side behind Drexel.
Behind Arix’s group were Femi and Dae-jung. Dae-jung not only watched over Femi but also kept an eye on the rear to prevent any beasts from attacking from behind.
"Roar!"
The deafening beast roar made Drexel motion for a pause. Drexel then looked at Arix and nodded.
Arix understood and quickly climbed a tree to look for the source of the sound from a higher vantage point.
While doing this, Arix felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if she had done this before. She shook her head to clear her thoughts and focused on the direction of the roar.
There were five beasts, as large as prehistoric creatures, attacking some students from the Hecaris Military Academy. Two of the students were already seriously injured.
Arix swallowed nervously. These beasts in this interstellar era were different from what she had imagined. She thought they would be like the wild animals from her past life.
If she wasn’t mistaken, these looked like brown bears, but now they were bigger than elephants.
Maybe as humans evolved, so did the beasts.
Seeing the five students in danger, Arix couldn’t think too much and called down to the others, "There’s a group of our classmates from the Hecaris Military Academy ahead, surrounded by five strange brown bears. Should we help?"
"Go help them!" Drexel said firmly, out of concern for their classmates.
"Yes, get them now!" Dae-jung agreed, though he was more excited about earning points. Helping others was just a bonus.
"Alright!" Arix jumped down from the tree and quickly led the way towards the northwest.
"Arix, is it the northwest? This is too slow. Dae-jung and I will go ahead first," Drexel said, frowning.
"Yes, it’s the northwest, about 500 meters away. You two go ahead; we’ll catch up soon," Arix said seriously.
"Okay!" Drexel nodded decisively. He told Arix to be careful, then he and Dae-jung quickly disappeared from sight.
Arix, left behind, watched the two move like lightning with envy. She gritted her teeth and ran faster in Drexel’s direction.
Luckily, the incident site wasn’t far. When Arix and the others arrived, Drexel and Dae-jung had already killed one of the bears.
At that moment, they were fighting four bears, desperately trying to prevent them from further injuring the five students.
The students were either seriously or lightly wounded.
Arix watched worriedly for a while, ensuring that Drexel and Dae-jung were not in immediate danger, and then she breathed a little easier.
She quickly turned to Calista and Femi, "Let’s go check on them."
"Okay," Calista and Femi nodded vigorously. They followed Arix and quickly reached the five injured students, and then they began to check their conditions.
Arix went to the most severely injured student. He was already unconscious, and Arix started examining him.
The student had a dislocated left arm, a severe wound that was bleeding heavily, and several minor injuries that were not too serious.
After understanding the basic situation, Arix started treatment right away. She pressed the pressure point on the student’s arm to stop the bleeding.
Then she carefully tore open the student’s shirt. After taking three hemostatic herbs from her waist, she chewed them, and applied them to the wound.
The dislocation was easier to handle. Arix pressed a few times and then set the arm back in place with one strong motion.
The other students and Calista were astonished at Arix’s treatment speed.
It seemed like her medical skills were as good as a treatment capsule’s. ’Is she some kind of medical genius?’ they wondered.
Busy with her tasks, Arix didn’t notice her friends’ reactions. She quickly moved to another severely injured and unconscious student.
She told Calista, who was treating him, "Calista, let me handle this one. Please watch over the student beside you. Tell me if anything goes wrong."
"Okay!" Calista nodded firmly.
Calista checked the student Arix had just treated and was amazed that such severe injuries had been handled so easily. ’How did she managed to heal him without a treatment capsule or medicines? Is it magic?’
Calista looked at Arix with a mix of shock and admiration. She had thought Drexel was impressive, but Arix was even more so. She felt like she might switch her admiration from Drexel to Arix now.
Treating injuries was as natural to Arix as breathing. In less than ten minutes, she had also saved the other severely injured student.
Meanwhile, Calista had already helped the three less seriously injured students.
After ensuring all the injured students were taken care of, Arix breathed a sigh of relief and then turned her attention to the battlefield.
While Arix watched Drexel and Dae-jung fight, on the Sixth Warship’s meeting room...
Five examiners and five chief training instructors, along with the head of the training base, Nyx, were discussing Arix.
"A master-level doctor wouldn’t be better than this!" Mendez commented, adjusting his glasses while watching Arix on the live feed.
"Arix has always been excellent," Ortiz added, praising her. After all, having such an outstanding student made him proud as her instructor.
"Well well... This little one always brings us so many surprises. I suddenly want to knock her down and take her home secretly," Laiden joked with a chuckle.
"Hmph!" Marlone snorted proudly, feeling too good to even bother arguing with him.
The only person feeling uneasy was Solis from the Koros Military Academy. Arix had once been their student, and now they had lost her to the Hecaris Military Academy.
Thinking about this, Solis’s mood soured even more. Only someone who had lost a billion-dollar lottery could understand his current feeling.
The more Solis thought about it, the more he slumped in his chair, feeling completely dejected.
