190: Chapter 190: The Black Cat's Blessing (Chapter 31)

Why was it white?

She remembered that the creature Meng Yu had beaten up was a black cat-headed humanoid.

Why was there a distinction between black and white?

Qian Ye puzzled over this.

At this moment, across the entire plaza...

Low-pitched incantations intertwined with the screams and gasps from below the stage.

Qian Ye observed the surroundings surreptitiously when a sudden burst of cheering erupted.

"Village Chief, Village Chief!"

Shouts echoed from all around as someone was escorted onto the stage by the crowd.

Qian Ye stared at the man the villagers called the Village Chief; he leaned on a cane, wore black robes, and walked onto the stage with trembling steps.

He was followed by two other Black-Robed Figures who stood tall on either side of him, heads held high and wearing black masks.

The crowd continued to stir restlessly. "Residents, next begins the decennial sacrificial ritual."

"Your fates shall be rewritten once again today."

The Village Chief raised the cane in his hand; only then did Qian Ye see clearly that it looked more like a scepter than a cane.

To destroy this sacrifice, interfering with his movements might disrupt the entire ceremony. Qian Ye glanced at the frenzied residents below the stage; for now, she could only sabotage things from the shadows.

Qian Ye carefully observed the environment, looking for any usable props or terrain features.

Keeping an eye on the approaching crowd, Qian Ye lowered her head and slowly backed away, pretending to be part of the ritual as she drew closer to the figure who appeared to be the officiant.

Qian Ye cautiously wove through the crowd, nearing the Village Chief.

Suddenly, she noticed something unusual about the ground beneath her feet. Looking down, she saw a hidden mechanism. Qian Ye pondered; perhaps this was the key to disrupting the ritual.

She quietly crouched down, attempting to unlock the mechanism. Just then, a sharp alarm sounded, and the entire plaza fell into chaos.

She sped up her work on the mechanism and finally succeeded in triggering it.

A beam of light shot out from the ground, aimed directly at the Village Chief on the stage.

By the time the Village Chief noticed something was wrong, Qian Ye had already finished with the mechanism.

The Village Chief looked at the light in terror. "No..."

As the words left his mouth, he instantly turned to ash.

With the disappearance of the Village Chief, the ritual was forced to a halt.

The girl within the firelight had now awakened.

Before Qian Ye could get close to her, she looked up and met a pair of eerie green eyes.

"You... deserve to die..."

"You actually stopped me from becoming a follower of Lord Curtain Shadow."

"Kill her!"

"Kill her!"

The hideous face and the familiar, piercing voice belonged to A Lian—the same voice heard in that desolate place.

Back then she was clearly asking for help, so what was this play now?

Qian Ye frowned, looking at the girl with the distorted face before her; it was hard to reconcile this with the smiling girl from before.

However...

Qian Ye stared at the person in front of her and then looked behind. The residents hadn't left; they had surrounded Qian Ye, staring at her with hollow eyes.

"Kill her!"

"Quick, kill her!"

A Lian ignored the firelight drawing closer to her and coldly barked orders at the surrounding people. Strangely, they obeyed her commands.

Qian Ye stared at A Lian, a red light swirling in her own eyes. In her vision, A Lian's entire body was being eroded by a layer of white mist, and her eyes glowed with an eerie green light.

That face flickered back and forth between a cat's face and a human's face.

Seeing that face, a look of realization appeared in Qian Ye's eyes, as if she understood something.

"So that's how it is."

Qian Ye murmured to herself.

"Hee hee."
