19: A narrow escape from death
Finally, the night hawk helicopter landed on the ground. Carlos, covered in blood, hovered above the night hawk helicopter. Blood dripped onto the helicopter, and the ticking sound made Wei He's heart leap into his throat.
"You won't escape this time, hahahaha!" Carlos endured the pain and chanted incessantly. A massive Magic Array appeared beneath his feet, aimed directly at the night hawk helicopter.
Just as Carlos thought victory was within his grasp, the night hawk helicopter was suddenly enveloped by a force of space. A pale blue pulse circle rippled around the night hawk helicopter, and distorted spatial ripples gradually condensed in the center of the circle; the air seemed to be stretched into a transparent "water curtain."
Carlos could hardly believe his eyes. This force of space, which had been lost for hundreds of years, had actually appeared here, leaving him momentarily at a loss for what to do.
"No matter what, Wei He must die today!" As if having made a certain resolution, Carlos roared crazily.
At the same time, the Magic Array beneath his feet shot out a bolt of dazzling lightning, heading straight for the night hawk helicopter below. Just as the lightning was about to strike the night hawk helicopter, the entire night hawk helicopter suddenly vanished from the spot. The lightning struck the ground, emitting bursts of white smoke. After the smoke cleared, only a huge deep pit remained.
"It disappeared, it definitely disappeared just now. Wei He, I will definitely find you!" Carlos looked at the deep pit at his feet. He was certain that when he attacked just now, the night hawk helicopter had suddenly vanished from the spot, and the fact that there was nothing in the deep pit now confirmed this.
Carlos was also a bit tired by now. He slowly landed on the ground, frowning as he thought about the things that had happened recently, and the strange buildings and weapons throughout the Harsh Forest.
Including the fact that Wei He seemed to be helped by immortals, escaping from his subordinates every time. This time, there was even the legendary, miraculous power of space. Thinking of this, Carlos appeared somewhat dejected, and his once proud head was now lowered.
"For the Commander, charge!" The Conscripts and American Soldiers, holding their guns, surrounded Carlos. Nearby, there was also a damaged apocalypse tank; it was clearly one that had luckily survived the lightning storm.
Covered in blood, Carlos looked at the enemies around him, then looked at his own body. He, who could summon wind and rain in the Magic Empire, had never been so disheveled. Watching the bullets land around him, Carlos wiped the blood from his forehead, veins extending from his forehead to his neck. He slowly rose into the air, chanting with an indifferent face: "Blood Covenant! Fusion! Death Thunderclap!"
A massive blue Magic Array appeared beneath his feet, covering the apocalypse tank and Conscripts below. A huge blue spherical energy body slowly slid down from the Magic Array. The moment the energy ball detached from the Magic Array, it fell rapidly, landing on the ground and enveloping the entire remnants of the Red Alert Troops.
"Boom..." With a loud noise, the blue energy ball exploded on the ground. The few remaining Red Alert Troops were wiped out in one fell swoop. Countless tank fragments mixed with soldiers' remains were scattered everywhere, and a huge deep pit was left on the ground.
Carlos dragged his exhausted body and drifted toward the Harsh Forest.
Somewhere on the continent, Wei He stepped down from the damaged night hawk helicopter. On the screen of the red alert system, he saw that Carlos had wiped out all his troops and was now frantically destroying buildings in the base to vent his anger.
"Commander, given that there is currently insufficient economy to counterattack, it is suggested that you recycle the buildings quickly to avoid further losses!" the system reminded him in time.
"System, recycle all buildings except for the Nuclear Power Plant!" Wei He sat on the ground helplessly and ordered the system.
"Understood, Commander!" the system replied.
In the Harsh Forest, Carlos was attacking the buildings in the Red Alert Base. A bolt of lightning shot from his wand, striking the Spy satellite. Immediately, the building began to burn with raging flames. Just as Carlos was about to continue his attack, the metal structures on the exterior of all the red alert buildings made a "creaking" sound. Subsequently, they began to disassemble in an orderly manner; from top to bottom, piece by piece, part by part, they vanished, turning into invisible resources and being recycled.
In less than a moment, all the buildings had vanished without a trace. The buildings that had previously stood in rows were now reduced to only one building surrounded by three large wells—it was the Soviet Army Nuclear Power Plant.
"So many buildings have actually vanished into thin air, leaving only this one building; there must be a trap!" Carlos was full of confusion and muttered to himself: "Where on earth did this Wei He come from to have such miraculous power? And where has he run off to? Everything is too strange!"
Carlos looked at the building in front of him and could feel that it contained tremendous energy, a type of energy he had never seen before.
"This old man is really hard to deal with; he didn't fall for it even with this!" Wei He said disappointedly when he saw that Carlos not only didn't attack the Nuclear Power Plant but also left the Harsh Forest.
Wei He was still lamenting and did not notice at all that more than a dozen huge, brown bear-like creatures had suddenly rushed out of the nearby forest. The giant bears were over 4 meters long, nearly 2.5 meters tall at the shoulder, and their size far exceeded that of ordinary brown bears. Their torsos were solid like small hills, covered in thick, fluffy, golden-brown fur.
The giant bears were currently opening their huge mouths, baring fangs and brandishing claws as they lunged toward Wei He and the others. Three American Soldiers immediately switched to deployment mode, and three M60 machine guns spat out tongues of fire. The giant bear running in the front, despite its huge body, was shredded to pieces by the machine guns and fell on the path of its attack.
Wei He took advantage of this gap to jump onto the night hawk helicopter. Immediately, the night hawk helicopter slowly rose, preparing to flee the scene.
"Want to run? It's not that easy!" In the forest, a woman wearing a lotus-green long dress, who looked delicate and weak, stood on the back of a giant bear and snorted coldly: "These few people are really strange; I can't let them go!"
She held a red-gold inlaid suet jade gourd in her skin-like-congealed-fat hand. Her right hand opened the stopper of the gourd, and a few creatures flew out from inside, about 3 cm in length (far exceeding ordinary ants). Their bodies were streamlined, with clearly segmented torsos covered in fine, dark brown fuzz. Their chests were raised and muscular, and on both sides, they each had a pair of membranous wings—the wings were a bright vermilion color, as if soaked in cinnabar. These were the Vermilion-Winged Ants.
The Vermilion-Winged Ants flew out of the gourd, as if guided by someone, and flew toward the night hawk helicopter that had just taken off. The moment Wei He closed the cabin door, they luckily flew into the aircraft. They were not discovered by Wei He and hid under the seats. A flame began to burst from their vermilion wings. Although the flame was small, it quickly ignited the seat. As the fire grew larger and larger, the American Soldier in the cockpit, under Wei He's instruction, began an emergency landing. Before the fire engulfed the helicopter, they finally landed successfully on the ground.
Wei He and the other person quickly opened the cabin door and fled the helicopter. At this moment, Wei He saw a few vermilion insects flying out of the fire.
"Kill these insects!" Wei He, in a terrible mood, gritted his teeth and ordered.
The American Soldier also saw these vermilion insects. Immediately, he turned the gun muzzle, and the machine gun continued to spit tongues of fire. No matter how agile the Vermilion-Winged Ants were, how could they be faster than bullets? Very quickly, they were torn into pieces by the hail of bullets and fell to the ground.
