320: Dead Rising

Lin Yao stood on the city wall of East Sea City Base, gazing into the distance. There, a dense horde of zombies surged like a tide, their numbers as countless as the stars, sending shivers down one's spine.

The Alliance's mecha technology had entered a bottleneck, and if this zombie tide had arrived two months later, the first batch of experimental mechas would have been deployed to the battlefield. But everything was beyond Lin Yao's expectations; the inability to contact Tian Ming left the East Sea City Base's high command feeling uncertain.

With such an intense zombie assault, it was unknown how long the hundred-meter-high city wall could withstand it.

Outside the city wall, several colossal creatures appeared. They advanced slowly towards the wall with an overwhelming sense of oppression. These zombies could no longer be called mere zombies.

They were a full fifteen meters tall, moving extremely slowly. These zombies were like humanoid mechas, covered in thick metal armor. They opened their gaping maw, took a deep breath, and then their powerful lungs compressed intensely.

Bang!

A directional airflow formed an extremely powerful high-pressure air jet, striking towards the wall. This air jet kicked up the dirt on the ground and, upon hitting the city wall, caused the entire wall to tremble.

The outer perimeter of the city wall had been reinforced by Tian Ming with a mixture of Graphene and steel plates. The fact that this jet's energy could make the city wall tremble indicated its extreme power.

"These Giant Zombies can use mouth cannons! Rocket launchers! Rocket launchers! Prioritize taking out these big guys!"

"Commander, there are heavy element radiation zombies behind us. Our drones cannot fly over the horde."

Bai Yan observed the battlefield situation and immediately commanded, "Heavy artillery soldiers, assemble in sections C and D of the city wall. Focus your fire on the rear of the zombie horde. Prioritize eliminating those heavy element zombies; they can fire high-energy particle beams and pose a greater threat. Let some of the less threatening ones through; the intelligent system can handle them."

The heavy artillery soldiers on the city wall quickly assembled, aiming their cannons at the sky. Boom boom boom, hundreds of shells trailing white contrails soared towards the rear of the zombie horde. The area behind the zombie horde instantly erupted into a sea of fire, and the horde's advance slowed considerably.

The front lines of the zombie horde had already entered the three-kilometer range outside the wall.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

A dense sound of springs loosening echoed on the ground. Countless landmines sprang directly to over a meter in height and exploded with a roar, obstructing the zombie front line. The second defensive line, composed of nano-filaments, directly bisected the zombies surging in from behind.

The observation ports on the city wall opened, and dark, hollow gun barrels extended from within, aiming at the zombie horde ahead. The operator sat at the control console, wearing VR tactical goggles. He had to simultaneously operate five automatic machine guns to provide high-intensity suppressive fire over the designated defensive area.

"Damn it, I'm going to mow them down!" The man skillfully manipulated the control console. Such consoles were spaced every twenty meters, resulting in an astonishingly high firepower density along the one to two-kilometer defense line.

With a command from the Commander, hundreds of machine guns on the city wall opened fire simultaneously. Bullets poured out like a storm, striking the zombies and riddling them with holes. Although some of these zombies had evolved metallic skin, they still could not withstand such a dense hail of bullets.

Within the zombie horde, some smaller zombies leaped forward, but they were quickly riddled by the heavy machine guns on the city wall.

"Boom!"

Amidst the roar of heavy artillery, several tactical rockets, trailing long plumes of flame, accurately struck the gigantic zombies within the horde.

These gigantic zombies were directly blown into fragments by the explosions, and some zombies further away were also shaken, bleeding from all orifices due to the powerful shockwave.

"Commander, the forward outpost has been overrun. High-altitude reconnaissance drones have detected bomb zombies approximately fifty kilometers outside the city wall. They can synthesize Nitrogen Bombs within their bodies and then spit them out."

A hint of worry appeared in Bai Yan's eyes. Some zombies had abandoned intellectual evolution and began developing into pure war machines. If this continued, no amount of firepower would be enough to fill the void.

After thirty continuous minutes of relentless bombardment, the three major zombie hordes suffered heavy losses, and the outposts that had extended from the outer perimeter of the wall were also completely destroyed by the zombies.

"Commander, the city defense artillery regiment is low on ammunition. Requesting resupply."

"Heavy artillery, switch to incendiary shells and create a wall of fire for me. Shuttle pilots, take your positions. Target: the Corpse King commanding from the rear." Bai Yan immediately ordered.

The heavy artillery on the city wall quickly switched to incendiary shells. Hundreds of incendiary shells landed among the zombie horde, and flames burned within the horde, instantly forming a long wall of fire.

The shuttle pilots were already in position. They controlled small unmanned shuttles, rapidly flying towards the location of the Corpse King commanding from the rear.

Dense swarms of small shuttles carried high-explosive bombs. Their goal was to destroy the Corpse King in a single strike, thereby disintegrating the zombie horde's attack.

Bai Yan stared intently at the battlefield, silently praying for the shuttles to succeed.

Roar! A roar erupted from the front line. Immediately after, a blue electric arc suddenly exploded, like a ball lightning detonation. The base's radio communications experienced instantaneous interference. In that single moment, hundreds of shuttles directly crashed, flailing like headless flies.

"Damn it! What's going on? Who taught the zombies to use electromagnetic interference?" Bai Yan cursed furiously.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! Countless spherical objects appeared in the sky. These Nitrogen Bombs, the size of volleyballs, were hurled by the zombies like shotputs towards the defensive wall.

Visual and infrared radars emitted piercing alarms.

Click, click, click, click...

The close-in weapon systems rotated their barrels, and tens of thousands of rounds formed a dense metal storm.

Boom, boom, boom...

The close-in weapon systems on the city wall suddenly opened fire, and the dense barrage detonated the Nitrogen Bombs in mid-air.

Shockwaves mingled with heatwaves, rolling in. At this moment, a large number of laser weapons had finished charging. The steel protective covers of the energy weapons opened, and the cooling fans hummed.

Over a hundred scorching laser beams shot out from various corners of the city wall. Countless laser beams intertwined, and the zombie horde fell in swathes, like candied hawthorns on a stick, impaled by the lasers.

But the zombie horde seemed endless. Even with such high-density firepower, only the front-line zombies were barely cleared, with more continuously surging from the rear, seemingly without end.

Large numbers of zombies gnawed on their fallen kin on the front lines, evolving on the spot, causing a hint of despair to well up in the hearts of the defenders.

"Commander, ammunition consumption is too high. Stock is critically low."

"Commander, energy weapons are overheating."

Bai Yan's heart sank as he listened to the reports from various combat units.

The foremost zombies had already reached the base of the city wall, and the defensive line made of nano-filaments was piled high with zombie corpses. Some of the stakes anchoring the nano-filaments were even gnawed to pieces by the zombies.
